To have expected a warning (fireworks)?

Our back neighbours (adjoining gardens) have just had a huge firework display.

We have a cat and a dog who have been scared shitless. With a bit of warning we'd have kept them indoors, upstairs and sheltered from it as much as possible.

Us humans actually enjoyed watching it but we had to watch from inside (as they did) due to the falling debris, which we discovered after a few minutes of stepping outside.

Our kids play together and we are on nodding terms. AIBU to think a knock on the door at some point during the last few days would have been appropriate? Or am I being a grinch?

Well it's the 5th of November, mark the calendar for next year.

It's not shocking people have fireworks tonight. Yabu

If you had wrote this yeatserday or tomorrow you would not be unreasonable

justnippingin · 05/11/2016 18:38

You see, I don't think it's at all unreasonable to give your neighbour a heads up that you're letting fireworks off feet from their door, knowing they have animals. It's not hard, takes two mins. I've prepared my dog who is sedated and I'm in with him, DD out with close friends at a bonfire / firework display. Yep it's 5th November and it's expected that there will be stacks of fireworks going off all night. Prepare your animals but no, you're not being unreasonable to think someone would give you the nod about their fireworks.

Lilaclily · 05/11/2016 18:38

Remember remember the 5th of November

Grin

Ffs !

YuckYuckEwwww · 05/11/2016 18:41

You had a warning! It's called your calendar!

And also, behalf of your neighbours I am officially giving you warning that New Years Eve falls on he 31st december this and ever year. Sorted.

Armi · 05/11/2016 18:44

I do get what you mean. I expect fireworks....but my neighbours have FIREWORKS, as in the place sounds like a war zone. It's once a year, so.....fine. But still, you know, LOUD.

It's shaking soot lose from up the chimney.

a7mints · 05/11/2016 18:44

got to be a wind up!

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 05/11/2016 18:49

Do your neighbours have a lot of land? Loud explosions and falling debris sounds like more than garden fireworks. Shock

We bought a box of garden fireworks and could hardly hear them from 6ft away. Just a bit of fizzing and a few multi coloured sparks. Grin A real let down actually, the Catherine wheel didn't work at all.

Shamalamalam · 05/11/2016 18:53

Yes! My next door neighbours have just set off some FIREWORKS. Nothing like the fireworks the other side had a bit earlier.

We're indoors, TV is on loud, curtains are drawn and but it still sounds like we're in the middle of a shoot out.

The dog is absolutely bricking it - in fact we're both squeezed under DD1's bed

gininteacupsandleavesonthelawn · 05/11/2016 18:57

It is 5th Nov. I'm hating it though as we only got one of the 2 cats in and the other nowhere to be seen 😔 I don't think they should be sold to the general public

Ditsy4 · 05/11/2016 18:59

No, you are not being unreasonable. Neighbour with manners would knock or put a message through the door. 3 doors down used to do it and terrify my horse. She was shaking and in a sweat. Every year I asked them to inform me but they didn't so it would be a grab coat, wellies and out and I would have to walk her a mile and a half away. They could have gone to the village playing fields and not had noisy fireworks but no these professed animal lovers never did and they were ear splitting.
I think they should all be banned except organised events. There are accidents every year.

WorraLiberty · 05/11/2016 18:59

Yanbu. It's basic manners - like letting neighbours know about building works in advance and apologising for any inconvenience. Always amazes me that people are so thoughtless. Back gardens are quite a different matter to the local park displays - much closer.

It's not comparable to building works because it's BONFIRE NIGHT.

Back gardens up and down the country will have people letting fireworks off.

Plus, how many neighbours doors are you supposed to knock on? Every one in your row of terraced houses and then every one in the next street because your garden backs on to theirs?

Then there'll be the houses just across the street etc too.

I think I'd be a tad mystified if a neighbour knocked to warn us tonight of all nights, that they're having fireworks Grin

ShowMeTheElf · 05/11/2016 19:09

5th November, midnight on NYE, Chinese New Year....the three nights to expect them.
Any other night without warning is massively unreasonable.
Remember remember etc etc.

MsJamieFraser · 05/11/2016 19:09

YABU its the 5th of Nov.

Most of my friends have a thundershit for their animals, and also a safe den for their animals to escape from

thestarryeyedsurprise · 05/11/2016 19:13

YANBU I think as neighbours they should show some courtesy and just let you know.. not like some of my neighbours who have been having various displays over the last week

DameXanaduBramble · 05/11/2016 19:13

You're cross because you haven't prepared, don't blame the neighbours, they don't have to tell you at all, not tonight.

WaitrosePigeon · 05/11/2016 19:15

I totally understand how you feel and yes it would have been nice to for them to let you know but they don't have too really.

I won't say YABU though because I don't think you are.

I do think fireworks should be banned to the general public though.

Suppermummy02 · 05/11/2016 19:23

FYI expect there to be fireworks tomorrow as well, its essentially fireworks weekend.

daisypond · 05/11/2016 19:25

Is your garden quite small? My garden is about 20ft long and our neighbours at the back and at the side (I'm in a small terraced house) have fireworks going on. I wouldn't expect them to warn me. I've got pets, too.

Bountybarsyuk · 05/11/2016 19:28

We live on an estate with houses at the back and front and there has been continuous banging since about 5pm, including right outside. I don't think all these people should have told us, it's not practical.

Pollyanna9 · 05/11/2016 19:28

Stating fireworks shouldn't be sold to the general public is pointless and irrelevant to this topic really - it's a side issue. OP KNEW it was coming but did nothing to prepare her beloved pets - who owns the pets, her or her neighbour?! She's responsible. If they had told her, what action would she have taken?! 2 hours notice if she was lucky - to do what? Proper preparation would have needed to start weeks before.

FlapsTie · 05/11/2016 19:46

We've done years of fireworks with no problems so no need to prep the animals. Something 30ft away at the end of the garden banging and whizzing and throwing down random bits of cardboard is somewhat different though. If it was us we'd have let everyone know (small close of six houses). I am willing to accept iabu though. It was just a small whinge. No action will be taken Grin

This is the first year my dog has been frightened of fireworks - he's 9, has always loved watching them, used to go clay pigeon shooting with my dad plus we back onto fields so have a lot of those bird scarers near us so he's used to loud bangs.

We've never had to prepare him, he's never been remotely bothered.

This year a local tourist attraction started a weekly firework display during the summer holidays and he's now utterly terrified of them.

We have some medication from the vet, but it's not really helped

AudreyBradshaw · 05/11/2016 20:39

We've got a Deep Purple concert on (loudly...but that's the only way to listen to Deep Purple) and have doped the animals up. 3 on calmex, 1 on doggy prozac. One is still shaking, panting and freaked out to the max, but is glassy eyed as balls. Hate bonfire night.

Sugarlightly · 05/11/2016 20:49

There are not many nights in the UK calendar year which are guaranteed to involve fireworks, but 5th November is one of them. YABU

DoYouRememberJustinBobby · 05/11/2016 20:52

I think there might be a rhyme to help remember Guy Fawkes night.
