Indigestion or Heart attack?

AtSea1979 · 04/11/2016 23:14

...getting out of bed to source pain relief.

Got the most horrendous chest pain. Most likely indigestion I'm guessing Confused but no eaten anything dodgy, well not eaten anything in past 3 hours or so. Really can't be bothered getting up to try and find paracetamol and it's too painful to move anyway. It's not subsiding as I write this either. What can I do to test my theory? Cup of milk? Or is that for acid reflux not indigestion. No idea but it hurts like hell right in the centre of my chest. Otherwise healthy, young (ish), no real reason to think it's anything sinister. Shall I try to jump around? See if that shifts anything? Kill me or cure me?

I find that drinking water and some stretching normally alleviates heartburn/indigestion for a little while. Mostly I just end up having to be sick to relieve the pressure.

wish my heart rate remained the same throughout as I remembered my Fitbit was tracking it (only had it a few days) so I'm happy that that rules out heart related stuff. If I get it again I will get checked out. I might get some gaviscon in just in case.

sugar that sounds awful is there no treatment for it?

I have gastro problems which are being investigated so I'm not too worried

Emberfirefly · 06/11/2016 08:35

Cardiac nurse here. Your heart rate staying the same means bugger all. Most likely it was gastric but no way of knowing unless you have the appropriate tests at the time you have the pain. If you have chest pain like this it is always worth getting it checked out - it's never a waste of time having chest pain assessed and any health care professional will tell you that (certainly from the type of pain you have described here) a quick ECG and blood test could rule out heart attack very quickly. My advice would be go and get that done today within the next 12 hours. Best be safe than sorry. And cardiac pain can be associated with belching/passing wind so don't rely on that being a reason to presume it's gastric. If you are young, otherwise fit and well and don't smoke it is highly likely to be gastric but no one can say for sure without assessing you properly.

For those attacking the OP for posting on MN, didn't you see the post the other day where a poster very nearly died but survived thanks to MN advice?

Yes an Internet forum isn't ideal to post in a poss medical emergency but maybe reliance on the internet is a good thing in some circumstances.

AtSea1979 · 10/11/2016 07:01

Ok I don't think it's indigestion now as it's just started again and 6:30. But this time it's def on right side (not left) and it's front and back. Doesn't get worse when I breath. Not sure about moving as I was walking when it started.
...unless I've slept funny and it's totally unrelated. I guess it's time to see a doc and get a second opinion.

Yes, atsea, sounds like you'd better get checked out. Call 111 at the very least.

Groovee · 10/11/2016 07:45

Sounds very like gall stones. See your GP today.

Temporaryname137 · 10/11/2016 07:52

Sounds like it could be a gallbladder attack to me. But DEF get checked out, I'm sure it's nothing serious, but best not to mess around with chest pain.

PikachuSayBoo · 10/11/2016 08:06

I once honestly thought I was having a heart attack. Woke with the most awful, crushing chest pain and sat in bed googling for over an hour. Pain subsided and I went back to sleep. So I can believe people could come on mn asking for advice.

With me it happened a few times and I realised it was when I'd taken tablets right before going to bed. I think the tablets were getting stuck half way down as I wasn't upright when taking them and I wasn't bothering with any water. Now I take my tablets earlier and Ive been OK.

AtSea1979 · 10/11/2016 15:20

Thanks for all the advice. Right now I'm stuck in with poorly DD and have no pain so no doubt it'll roll on Smile

A cousin thought her gallstones were playing up but it was a heart attack. Too many fags and energy drinks apparently. She spent her 36th birthday is hospital and now may have to have an ICD inserted.
