... And the modern equivalent of black face? Are those who laugh at her act actually laughing at black culture?

OP posts:
MrsJayy · 03/11/2016 08:34

Its the producers fault she got to the lives not Honey Gs they should have sent her home but gave the viewers something to froth about and laugh at.

Ankleswingers · 03/11/2016 08:35

Oh ffs. Of course it isn't a racist act. She's just totally shit, that's it.

What a ridiculous post OP.

pepperpot99 · 03/11/2016 08:42

There was an earlier, better article in the Guardian by Lola Okolosie on this topic.

On balance I do think she is a bit racist; there is nothing to say that rap is the exclusive preserve of black people, but then again it is a very black form of music which originated in black communities and has strong cultural sensitivities which people need to be alert to.

What makes HoneyG so awful is firstly the fact that she is so talentless; secondly, and more disturbingly is the fact that she is a glitzed up, sanitised and packaged version of a rap artist who is simultaneously taking the piss out of rap. That makes it a bit racist, IMO. Every time people ring up and vote her in, they are voting to ridicule rap music. If she had a little talent, or didn't mock the way she thinks black people speak buy using dumb expressions like 'Norf Weezy' (nobody actually says that) or 'get my flow' perhaps it wouldn't be quite so appalling. But she does.

You cannot compare her to Eminem because he is a complex, successful artist who generates his own material, in a different league. HoneyG is only fake. I feel a bit sorry for her because she is clearly the joke candidate but has now got to see it through, as have the judges. In fact, yet another Guardian article has likened her to Trump - the outside, joke candidate whom nobody ever believed would go the distance...but hang on....

riceuten · 03/11/2016 08:44

She's just white trash, basically.

GreyHare · 03/11/2016 08:45

I haven't really seen her rap as I won't give x factor any room in my house or head, but surely if Honey G is racist for being white and saying 'yo yo yo' wouldn't that also make Tim Westwood a huge racist too Wink

Aeroflotgirl · 03/11/2016 08:46

Then you could say that Sasha Baron Cohen, with Ali G, and other comedians like him are racist than. I think she was modeling herself more on Ali G. Stupid op, really, I think the only people who are offended are white middle class women tbh.

Soubriquet · 03/11/2016 08:46

Very nice riceuten Hmm

Aeroflotgirl · 03/11/2016 08:47

Doh modelling, my spelling is up the creek today Grin

Aeroflotgirl · 03/11/2016 08:49

I personally think she wants to be the next Ali G, not taking the piss out of Afro/Carribean people fgs! Some people just find offence in anything, and want to be offended.

TealGiraffe · 03/11/2016 08:49

But the whole point of ali g was that he was a parody and people were too scared in interviews to point out he wasn't black.

There was one interview where he was referred to as 'a black man like yourself'. It was a piss take! Showing that people would toe the line rather than risk being 'racist'

foxychox · 03/11/2016 08:53

I don't think its a race issue but a class one, rap is typically a channel for people to get their message across about their difficulties. By just repeating someone else's rap as a middle class woman she is taking the piss out of the original rap artist.

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 03/11/2016 08:53

Not racist. Just utter shite. People are only questioning if its shit because the media are telling them it isn't. But it is. She would get kicked out a karaoke pub in normal circumstances.

Aeroflotgirl · 03/11/2016 08:55

Who is to say that rap is the preserve of black people, there are white rap artists who try to emulate their black counterparts, the voice, the accent, the behaviour. I feel that Honey G is just copying the rap culture in general, and does not realise tbh. Its comedy.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 03/11/2016 09:01

Am I the only person who always expects Honey G to take off the glasses, hat & wig and actually be Ant or Dec underneath? Blush Or basically just someone else - not specifically Ant or Dec, but another comedian, journalist etc.?

That said, I don't think she is racist purely for trying to rap, no. Whoever she is Wink.

Aeroflotgirl · 03/11/2016 09:01

I feel that people are just reading too much into this and making a big deal out of nothing. She is crap, it looks uncomfortable, and in a month or so she will fade into obscurity. The more people giving her airtime, the more she will continue.

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 03/11/2016 09:03

I agree aero. She's this years Jedward at best. I can't stand the xfactor.

ByeByeLilSebastian · 03/11/2016 09:07

I don't think she is racist or deserves success any less than any of the others. She does a great job of making you talk about her even if you hate her.

I view her a bit like Keith Lemon. Once you understand that it's a persona they are putting on it can be quite enjoyable. It's just acting.

SemiNormal · 03/11/2016 09:07

I don't see it as racist. London has become such a diverse multicultural city that a lot of people her age and younger will grow up with many different cultures around them, are they to ignore what they grew up with or embrace it? surely the latter is preferable? Should we separate things as black or white? things that only white people can do and things that only black people can do? I honestly think that to do that would be to divide everyone further and surely what the world needs is a unification of sorts?

BubbleGumBubble · 03/11/2016 09:09

I don't think she's being intentionally racist, but it is.

How?

WallisofWindsor · 03/11/2016 09:12

Honey G. Laquisha she ain't. Just a dumb ass broke woman Sad

MrsJayy · 03/11/2016 09:14

Only watched the auditions a few times didnt those lads get through who fell out about chickens cant remember their names but they were channeling their inner Rylan Grin they were just shit

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 03/11/2016 09:17

I would love to see a serious, battle of the bands type show.

pictish · 03/11/2016 09:18

She's not racist, no.

She just happens to be a plain, dumpy mid-thirties white woman who likes to rap. That's it. Whether she's any good or not is neither here nor there - she's allowed to fucking do it without being accused of evil. Ffs.

Making certain types of entertainment only befitting for certain types of people is a thicko's game.

Do what the fuck you like I say.

SpunkyMummy · 03/11/2016 09:28

www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2016/oct/11/honey-g-x-factor-blackface-novelty-rapper-post-brexit-uk

They apparently really do hate her.

I think people are too sensitive, too pc.
Worry about Trump/Hillary, Brexit, refugees...

Sugarlightly · 03/11/2016 09:31

I mean, I don't know how I feel about honey g but rap as a genre of music is inherently black and has been since it was born. Black people invented and popularised rap and it's interesting that the most popular rap artists is a white man. We can't stick our fingers in our ears and shout reverse racism! at anyone who dares to suggest that white people might have to be a little respectful when using this genre of music.
