... And the modern equivalent of black face? Are those who laugh at her act actually laughing at black culture?

She really winds me up. Its not the fact shes a white rapper. It the fact she has styled herself as a character, which completely takes the piss out of rap stereotypes. I have always enjoyed rap / hip hop, and it was used as an outlet, it was true stories of people lives, basically poetry set to a beat.
(Yes i know there is some shite out there as well)

She is ridiculing that by wandering around in a tracksuit saying 'yo yo yo'.

Actual rappers wouldn't just rap someone elses lyrics, the whole point of it was getting your own story out.
If she was a black middle aged woman would she have got through? Of course not!

I know its only x factor, but it just irritates me.

I actually did a bit of research and she doesn't seem to be taking the piss - she's been active on some sort of music scene since the early 00s.

This doesn't mean she's not terrible. Tbh I am more concerned for her mental health and despise X Factor for providing a platform for the general public to humiliate a person who's at least mildly delusional.

Her rapping is distasteful and disrespectful at a minimum because it's clear she doesn't understand the world she's emulating, or the struggles she's rapping about. But I genuinely don't think she realises.

She makes me uncomfortable. And I probably won't say it in real life. It is yet another example of cultural appropriation. As a successful black woman it just makes me cringe.

the original mockney girl

Exactly. Can Lilly Allen be accused of appropriating working class culture to sell records? Or is that not a 'thing'?

I think she might be an undercover journo or similar. As for racist- no- but she's clearly based her act on Ali G which was about young white British men acting "black street" and was a bit racist.

Thats it charlybs imagine being an actual rapper, writing lyrics about your struggles and life. Then seeing a middle class white woman prancing around making 'gangsta' signs, and people laughing and supporting her. Because 'rap isn't proper music anyway'.
All this 'i'm out here repping my endz!' shit is fucking embarrassing....

I don't think she's being intentionally racist, but it is.

She's the first rapper to get anywhere on the X factor and she's a white, middle class pisstaker. It's not funny really.

My goodness, if she wan't to rap, she can blooming rap. Its a free world. Its like saying certain people cannot do classical singing, or R&B, because only certain groups are allowed to do that. She can blooming rap if she wants to.

That Guardian article with Lily Allen is a scream. Lily Allen is "known for her hard-hitting lyrics" LOL.

Well not middle aged but not a youngster.

Do people still read newspapers like the guardian and fail? Wow.

Still op thanks your post made me laugh.

She makes me laugh actually like the whole show

I didn't realise she was only 35 Blush The stuff she is wearing obviously makes her look older to me! I never considered her as racist, but also never really considered her as being a serious act either. Any skin colour can try their hand at any genre of music surely? the way she speaks may well be trying to imitate a particular image but so do half the young teens these days!

Actually a lot rappers are rapping about their wealth.

Ha Ha, no you're being ridiculous. She's a posh bird from North London who is having a massive laugh at the X Factor's expense (though I'm quite sure they realise). She no more wants to be a rapper than Theresa May!

Would love to be a fly on the wall at the X Factor. Wondering if she stays in character the whole time or is saying in her posh voice "OK chaps, what ridiculous pile of shit shall we do this week then??"

I don't think it's racist but you can't compare her to people like Eminem. Eminem is from a completely different background to her, he raps about what he knows, works hard and is talented. Honey G is just taking the piss.

Mockney dad Keith was on a ch4 programme about single parents he replaced a mum for a week, anyway he was in asda with the teenager trying to keep to the budget and he was banging on about the air miles of bannanas. Ever since then everytime i see him I think KNOB

I know the comparison to Eminem was daft but I honestly think she thinks she is not taking the piss and thinks she is a legitimate rapper. Tbf somebody should have told her to stopit
