Just found a jar of cook-in curry sauce with a bb date of April 2009.

seal is still intact.

As it is a curry sauce I'm not sure I will be able to tell if its gone off.

Should I just bung it in the slow cooker & not tell DH?

No. Throw away your 7 years out of date sauce and buy a new one.

Jam I'd say go for it as it's virtually pure sugar. But spices go off with time.

Is it a creamy sauce? If so I'd chuck it. If not I'd eat it. It probably won't be very spicy though, spices lose their flavour over time.

Meh. It's probably fine. I think I'd chuck it to be on the safe side, but these things will generally last forever without making you ill.

I've opened it, it smells OK - and quite spicy. Its supposed to be a Saag Masala. It has got cream in it. I've also had a tiny taste, which was OK.

DH would not even think about checking the BB date.

Still wondering whether to use it because now I've thought about it I really want a curry.

I'd just order a curry in.

Also I just had food poisoning on the weekend. It's so so shit (literally). I wouldn't risk it.

How did you end up with a jar of unopened curry sauce that was presumably bought 9/10 years ago? Had it fallen behind the cooker? Did you inherit it?

I imagine that if is vegetable/fake-cream based, you'd be able to tell if it was off. It'd smell/taste weird.

I'm fairly lax about these things. In this case, I'd open the jar, give it a good sniff, if it smelled OK, I'd taste a teaspoonful and see if it tasted OK. If it tasted fine, actually I'd probably still bin it. Seven years is really old.

I am seriously not fussy about best before dates and pretty lax on use by dates but even I'd draw the line at 7 years out of date! Throw it out and go to the shop for a new jar of you really want to have curry...

You must have a pretty well-stocked larder for a jar of sauce to go unnoticed for the best part of a decade. I am sure you have the ingredients to whip up a nice curry without resorting to a jar of something which reached its "Best Before" date when Tony Blair was Prime Minister.
