to think about opening this jar

Just found a jar of cook-in curry sauce with a bb date of April 2009.

seal is still intact.

As it is a curry sauce I'm not sure I will be able to tell if its gone off.

Should I just bung it in the slow cooker & not tell DH?

I'm still here Grin

I told DH about the BBE date & he was up for trying it.

But I really didn't want to be responsible for encouraging others to eat stuff well out of date so I binned it.

I will have to wait for my chicken curry Sad

I'm glad you didn't eat poison curry cave Grin.

I once worked in a baker, I was very young and inexperienced. I was working the lunch shift alone (already a nightmare), when a person came in asking for a pizza. They were easy to make, ready made just need to pop in the oven. Except I couldn't find one in the fridge. There was one in the 'display' though, so just cooked that one. When the next person came on shift, I was told that pizza was goodness knows how old, hence a 'display' Blush.

Never saw that customer again. Convinced they are still sat on the toilet due to my toxic pizza. Glad you didn't go the same way, OP!

I'd have been tempted to make a very tiny curry and report back! And I'm a microbiologist Grin honestly, I think the sauce was preserved in a sterile environment and would have been fine.

IWantAnotherBaby · 01/11/2016 12:08

I'd have eaten it. I'm a doctor. Meh.

Wookiecookies · 01/11/2016 12:40

YABU unless it's the apocalypse, then and only then will you have a legitimate reason to open a sauce that is 7 years out of date, because by that point, a slightly funky ruby would probably be the least of your concerns.

BratFarrarsPony · 01/11/2016 12:42

" I'd have eaten it. I'm a doctor. "

bit of a non- sequiter there maybe....

IWantAnotherBaby · 01/11/2016 12:57

Kind of meant that maybe that means I should know better...? But actually, in common with the microbiologist above, I think its very unlikely to cause harm. So I'd eat it.

VilootShesCute · 01/11/2016 17:45

My husband eats anything. Out of date stuff, food that's been sitting out, wrinkly veg. He said he wouldn't touch 7 year old curry sauce Grin

FurryLittleTwerp · 01/11/2016 17:51

We found a little bottle of 20 year old Tabasco lurking in a cupboard - it must have survived several house moves & had faded from red to a nasty sludgy green.

Undeterred, DH added a little to tomato juice - it nearly blew his head off Grin Hmm

Some of the most cavalier people I know for eating out of date food have been doctors, medical students or doctors' offspring.

Has the apocalypse come and you're living in a dystopian nightmare world, where humans have formed feral gangs, desperately fighting over the last few surviving resources from before the atomic war?

If not, then no, you don't need to eat 7 year old jars of curry sauce.

CreepyContessaDiPlump · 01/11/2016 22:21

I did eat a jar of Chicken Tonight sauce that was 18 months out of date once. I'm still here (and was perfectly fine)!

KitKat1985 · 02/11/2016 08:19

Had you said a couple of months past it's BB date I'd say go for it, but 7 years is I think not worth the risk!

NoahVale · 02/11/2016 08:22

surely you can;t have stuff in yhour cupboard 7 years out of date, do you think you misread the date?

NerrSnerr · 02/11/2016 08:38

Noah is it that unimaginable that someone could have a jar 7 years out of date? The only reason I know I don't is because I moved 2 years ago so checked dates then, but things get chucked to the back and forgotten about.

cavefelem · 02/11/2016 12:14

I moved into this house in July 2009 and I really don't think I would have brought a jar already out of date with me. BBE date definitely says April 2009, and its difficult to imagine what else it could be.

I haven't bought any cook-in sauces for at least 3 years, so its at least that old. What's the normal shelf life for this sort of thing?

OP posts:
cavefelem · 02/11/2016 12:17

I do have half-full tins of treacle & golden syrup that are probably antique by now, I don't remember buying them & I can't even remember what for.

wanders off to find some recipes

Wookiecookies · 02/11/2016 14:56

Haha @OP you got Daily Failed! Grin

Wookiecookies · 02/11/2016 14:57

That'll learn you, with your crazy curry sauce storage habits! Grin

butterfliesandzebras · 02/11/2016 15:15

I think peoples comments about food poisoning are a little silly (it's a sealed jar), but wouldn't necessarily expect it to taste as good.

EdmundCleverClogs · 02/11/2016 15:26

Oh no, is this in The Fail? Link?

cozietoesie · 02/11/2016 15:43

It is indeed. Smile

HateMrTumble · 02/11/2016 15:47

Aren't these jars under £2? Hmm

Notso · 02/11/2016 16:04

With curry sauce it's a BBE rather than a use by isn't it?
