to think about opening this jar

Just found a jar of cook-in curry sauce with a bb date of April 2009.

seal is still intact.

As it is a curry sauce I'm not sure I will be able to tell if its gone off.

Should I just bung it in the slow cooker & not tell DH?

what doesn't kill you makes you stronger - go for it!

StartledByHisFurryShorts · 31/10/2016 14:50

Oh, wait. Ignore that last comment. I was thinking the BBE date was 2007. It was 2009. So Gordon Brown was PM at the point your curry sauce was no longer "best". Anyway, we've all changed since then. Including that sauce.

cavefelem · 31/10/2016 15:27

Perhaps if the half-full tin of treacle it was hiding behind had exploded I might have found it sooner.

Why would you risk a week on the toilet to save a couple of quid? Confused

BorpBorpBorp · 31/10/2016 15:47

Surely the risk of food poisoning in this case is actually very low? If the sauce is breeding bacteria, the safety button will have popped up. If the cream has curdled, it will be obvious. My money is on it being safe to eat, just maybe not as nice as when it was new.

80sWaistcoat · 31/10/2016 15:55

I'd eat it - it's just a best before date. If the lid hasn't popped up it should be fine. Just not as nice....I'd heat it up in a pan - taste it then chuck the rest of ingredients in.

NerrSnerr · 31/10/2016 15:57

I'm not usually fussy but the other day I had a pasta bake jar that was 2 years out of date and it tasted a bit off.

baconandeggies · 31/10/2016 16:00

eat it and let us know what happens. Happy halloween Halloween Wink

BratFarrarsPony · 31/10/2016 16:03

I wouldnt...

doradoo · 31/10/2016 16:04

I'd eat it! Our custard powder (exp 2013) has not caused any probs!

As a pp said, if the seal was intact and the button not popped up it should still be fine.

In ye olden days, bottling/jarring was what we did to preserve - it's the same as canning and they last forever 😉

BellesBelles · 31/10/2016 16:05

Urgh. Why take the risk for a £1.99 (or whatever) jar that's 7 years out of date?

Can you really afford to get ill, have time off work/need extra help to deal with DCs or whatever? Just chuck it Smile

BratFarrarsPony · 31/10/2016 16:06

really I agree - for the sake of probably less than 2 quid you would risk it?
just gross.

Temporaryname137 · 31/10/2016 16:09

i'm sure it's in here somewhere...

Mummytojane · 31/10/2016 16:13

But curry sauce is so cheap, why would you use one 7 years out if date? Confused

lljkk · 31/10/2016 17:08

I hate to waste anything, I'd eat it no hesitation (long as it smells & tastes ok).

PandaInTheMorning · 31/10/2016 17:13

I'm not overly concerned by BB or use by dates but I wouldn't eat something 7 years old.

Janey50 · 31/10/2016 17:17

About 3 years ago,I was staying at a friend's house for a few days, looking after her dog and cat while she was away on a business trip. She had told me to feel free to use any food that was in the fridge/freezer or cupboards. I found a tin of sweetcorn tucked away at the back of the cupboard. It had a 'best' before' date stamped on the bottom. End of September 2004. It was at the time,June 2013. More out of curiosity than anything,I opened it. It was meant to be sweetcorn 'niblets'. But it was more like sweetcorn sludge. Smelt fine. Just looked disgusting, like a puree. I didn't try eating it btw.

OzzieFem · 31/10/2016 17:25

Temporaryname137 That's cute. Does curry get hotter the longer you leave it, like good wine is supposed to mature and become better flavoured or whatever?

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 31/10/2016 17:31

I'd eat it Smile

In 1974, samples of canned food from the wreck of the Bertrand, a steamboat that sank in the Missouri River in 1865, were tested by the National Food Processors Association. Although appearance, smell and vitamin content had deteriorated, there was no trace of microbial growth and the 109-year-old food was determined to be still safe to eat. (from wiki)

RobinHumphries · 31/10/2016 18:34

I had a jar of pasta sauce once, it was a few months out of date, well I opened it and was cooking the pasta only to turn round to find large bubbles coming from the sauce - like a cartoon swamp!

MummyLikesWrapMusic · 01/11/2016 07:36

Are you still with us, OP?

MissVictoria · 01/11/2016 07:42

I guess someone decided to be Darwin for Halloween :P

FangsForTheMammaries · 01/11/2016 07:52
