AIBU to think we should stick to BST all year?

Reduce road accidents in November
Far fewer people start at around 6am since manufacturing industry was devastated in the 1960s
No need for schools to finish so early so children go home in the dark
Some schools might start later so rush hour spread out a bit more
Better for tourism

Scots would not like it, but if they were to vote for independence, could have the time zone they wished.

I'd prefer GMT all year round. That's our real time zone, with the sun at its highest at noon, so if necessary we should move our activities rather than the clocks.

BewtySkoolDropowt · 31/10/2016 17:53

Days are not shorter

Well, they are and they aren't.

Days are shorter and nights are longer if you class 'daytime' and 'nightime' as two separate periods, which is clearly what is being referred to here. The word 'day' is used both to mean a period of 24 hours and also the period of time where a particular place experiences daylight (as a synonym for daytime) - as seen in terms such as 'during the day' or 'day and night'.

GMT all year round?? Wtf - it would be light at 2am in June! Living as far north as we are a clock change is inevitable & really not that hard to deal with! 2 nights a year & it's ONE HOUR.

The accident argument has the most sway for me for BST in winter & BSTplus 1 in summer.

If you watch morning TV you can sometimes see it, they will be giving a weather forcast or broadcasting live from outside somewhere and it's darker or lighter outside (depending on where you live).

My birthday is at the end of October, I've had a fair few 25hour birthdays, I'm not sure if this makes me older.

SerendipityPhenomenon · 01/11/2016 07:06

I vaguely remember the permanent BST experiment; my main memory was that I thought it was great - mainly because it wasn't getting dark so early in the evenings. I've never really understood the argument for clock changing - at least since the use of electricity became pretty universal in the UK; it's not as if it changes the actual number of hours when we have daylight.

Igneococcus · 01/11/2016 07:42

I'm in Scotland and every year dp and I moan about the time change. I rather had the extra hour of daylight in the evening rather than the morning.

Somersetlady · 01/11/2016 07:46

Please can mumsnet start a campaign for this!
All parents everywhere would rather not see a clock change!

Tarla · 01/11/2016 07:49

Not all parents, thanks.

I agree with breadwidow, it's one hour, twice a year. The level of fuss over it is astounding. Suck it up!

a8mint · 01/11/2016 08:14

I don't think children should be making their way to school during morning rush hour in the dark. Most are home by evening rush hour

heron98 · 01/11/2016 08:52

I don't see the point in changing the clocks. In a week or so it will be dark in the morning AND in the evening, it hardly makes a difference either way.

BarInSpace · 01/11/2016 09:19

All parents everywhere would rather not see a clock change!

Confused Not true.

BarInSpace · 01/11/2016 09:21

If it's light at 2am in June by GMT then by switching to BST that would become 3am. How many people would notice that as opposed to what happens during normal waking hours?

YelloDraw · 01/11/2016 09:38

The accident argument has the most sway for me for BST in winter & BSTplus 1 in summer

This is what I want!

AuntGertrude · 01/11/2016 10:12

Stick to what we currently have. Changing to BST and BST+1 would have a huge negative effect on people in the north and Scotland - do they not count?

Personally I like the short winter afternoons, and lighter winter mornings to help me get up.

ArgyMargy · 01/11/2016 19:24

Well let's just hop & pray no-one decides to have a referendum on this...

CremeEggThief · 01/11/2016 19:27

YANBU. I would far prefer an extra hour of light in the evening.
