AIBU to think we should stick to BST all year?

Reduce road accidents in November
Far fewer people start at around 6am since manufacturing industry was devastated in the 1960s
No need for schools to finish so early so children go home in the dark
Some schools might start later so rush hour spread out a bit more
Better for tourism

Scots would not like it, but if they were to vote for independence, could have the time zone they wished.

Self Confused because we're not talking about some philosophical concept here. We're talking about actual daylight hours.

I suspect you could ask any group about how much daylight they'd like to live in and get a fairly uniform response.

Other than vampires of course.

Trills · 30/10/2016 14:08

Scots don't get a choice about how much daylight they get though - physics is to blame for that.

All they can choose is WHEN to have them.

GruochMacAlpin · 30/10/2016 14:10

Which is what we are discussing Trills

Trills · 30/10/2016 14:11

So why are you talking about asking people how many daylight hours they'd like? Confused

987flowers · 30/10/2016 14:14

I like the extra hour on a Sunday once a year, I look forward to it Grin

(Misses point of thread)

GruochMacAlpin · 30/10/2016 14:17

Trills I wrote you a long answer but actually I can't be arsed so I'm off to do something productive instead.

Careforadrink · 30/10/2016 14:20

It's not just Scotland!!!!!

Parts of England are further north than parts of Scotland!

Check your Geography people saying Scotland could have a different time zone!

borntobequiet · 30/10/2016 14:23

Another vote for GMT all year. I really don't need it to be daylight at 10:30 pm in the Summer.

alltouchedout · 30/10/2016 14:23

I wish we didn't have clock changes because they confuse me. I'm not thick really but I spend too much time twice a year going "it says 2pm. Is it really 1pm? Or 3pm?" God knows why but it will not ever stick in my head.
Hate dark mornings. Hate dark afternoons. Is there a way we can have no clock changes without Scotland spending the winter being in darkness till 10am? If so let's go for that.

Trills · 30/10/2016 14:43

Parts of England are further north than parts of Scotland!

And Edinburgh is further West than Bristol.

LordPeterWimsey · 30/10/2016 14:49

YABU. If we had BST all year, I'd be going to work in the dark and getting home in the dark for months - I wouldn't see daylight on work days. Anyone who works 9-5 would be in the same position.

The basic problem is that there isn't enough daylight in winter. I say we need to be towed about 1000 miles nearer the equator, and then everything will be fine. Though I'd miss the long evenings in summer.

MrsMook · 30/10/2016 15:09

I'd rather have the light in the evenings. During December and January, most people are up in the dark anyway, and the extra hour of light in the morning is gone in 4 weeks anyway, but 2 hours darker than it was the day before the clocks changed.

The safety argument is that it's safer for children walking home with daylight. More walk home than walk to school as many parents drop off only. Getting dark at 4.30 over 3.30 is better for encouraging children to be active- going to parks, play grounds, sports clubs. In midwinter, daylight between 8.30 and 3.30 means very few people get exposed to it.
For 9-5 workers it makes no difference any way!

I love going to west Ireland where its 3/4 of the way across the time zone. I don't notice much difference in the morning, but I do in the evening.

Pseudonym99 · 30/10/2016 16:48

I think we should stick to GMT all year to save mucking about with the clocks. Anyone who doesn't like the light mornings can then get up later.

Pseudonym99 · 30/10/2016 16:49

Earlier I meant

cleopatraseyebrows · 30/10/2016 16:53

YANBU. It's dark at 9am in December anyway, we only get a few weeks of brighter mornings.

AndNowItsSeven · 30/10/2016 16:54

Yanbu, I live in the North of England and would much prefer lighter evenings. It's just so miserable and dangerous on the roads.
Thankfully my dc finish school at 2.30 so they are safe getting home.

Meadows76 · 30/10/2016 17:15

'Scots would not like it'

Hmm
ClaudiaApfelstrudel · 30/10/2016 18:28

6pm and it's absolutely pitch black outside - not sure who could like this!

Topseyt · 30/10/2016 18:39

I just hate this time of year anyway with the clocks going back and the far too short days.

I am not sure there is an ideal solution, but purely from my own point of view, I can't see what there is to like.

ArgyMargy · 30/10/2016 22:40

Rustybear I find your figure very hard to believe. GB road death toll in 1965 was just under 8,000 so if the experiment reduced it by one third it's hard to believe it wasn't considered a success. Annual death toll in 2013 however was around 1,700. Seat belts are a far better lifesaver than dark winter mornings.

madamginger · 30/10/2016 23:17

I hate winter, I go to work and come home in the dark from now till February.
I'm in northern England.
I'd rather have lighter mornings, I never feel quite awake when I leave the house in the dark. It takes me longer to feel ready to start the day.

RustyBear · 30/10/2016 23:23

ArgyMargy, yes, sorry, I misread the BBC website, it was over the first 2 years of the experiment, not each year Blush

DesolateWaist · 30/10/2016 23:55

I just hate this time of year anyway with the clocks going back and the far too short days.

But the daylight hours would be the same regardless of what the clock says.

shrunkenhead · 31/10/2016 00:08

Days are not shorter. There are still 24 hours. I don't like it when they rob me of an hour in the spring and always look forward to getting it back again in the autumn!

user1471545174 · 31/10/2016 00:09

I remember liking the dark mornings experiment but I was a weird kid and liked pea soup fog, etc.
