To wash hair once a week - disagreement with Mil!

Just wondering how often your DCs have a bath/shower and wash their hair? Mine (aged 5 and 2) have a bath most evenings - at least 5 out of 7 days a week - and wash with soap. Hair wash once a week on a Sunday.
Mil was horrified to learn that they don't have a thorough wash every single night and appalled that hair is only done once a week.
Now I'm beginning to doubt my routine..... AIBU?

Sounds good to me - exactly the same as me! What's the problem?

BubbleGumBubble · 29/10/2016 23:31

Was them as much as they need it.
There is no "normal"
Some was their DC 3 tomes a day some do it once a week.
Niether parent is wrong.

If DC are stinky and dirty clean the. Simple.

She can be appalled all she wants! They're not her kids.

Mine aren't washed "thouroughly" every night either. At 2 and 5 they're not sweaty....carry on as you are!

BubbleGumBubble · 29/10/2016 23:31

Wash.
Times.

Sorry fat fingers.

arethereanyleftatall · 29/10/2016 23:34

1 x shower after swimming per week. 1 x bath with hair wash per week.
Not smelly. Both dds excema totally cleared up as soon as we stopped with all the baths and creams.

KatharinaRosalie · 29/10/2016 23:34

3 and 1 and unless they've been really sweaty or dirty, they get a hairwash once per week.

wtffgs · 29/10/2016 23:42

Once a week for hair (unless there are lice Angry). They shower daily (9 & 11) and pretty much always have done. Kids hair doesn't get dirty unless they smear their dinner in it! Removing marmite from baby hair is a not fond
memory!!

VforVienetta · 29/10/2016 23:42

Mine are the same ages as yours OP and they bathe less often - 2/3 baths a week, or more if necessary.
DS2 has mild eczema so I don't like to bath him too often else he gets all bumpy. DS1 doesn't get particularly dirty, hand and face washes are mostly adequate between baths.

Happyhippy45 · 29/10/2016 23:45

Grew up in the 70's-80's. Twice a week bathing and hair washing.......did the same with my kids circa 1994 and onwards.
They decide when they want to wash more than that IMO. Bollocks to daily bathing for wee kids (not babies) who don't get dirty/smelly.

madamginger · 29/10/2016 23:46

Mine have a bath/shower twice a week with hair wash both times and then a face wash in between.
Sometimes I run ds1 and 2 a 'play' bath where I chuck the toys in and leave them to play, to help them wind down after a busy day but I don't wash their hair.
They have a shower every day in the summer though if they have sun cream on, I don't think it's good for their skin to keep it on over night.

Bogeyface · 29/10/2016 23:48

The one way to make sure your kids get greasy hair (apart from hitting 13!) is to wash it every day. It strips hair of its natural oils, which then causes them to be over produced so if you miss one day then the hair gets greasy. This is why people say "Oh I have to wash my hair every day, its it so greasy if I dont" when in fact the washing is causing the problem, not solving it!

I wash mine once every 5 days, more than that and it needs it more than that iykwim.

The kids get theirs done twice a week, so about once every 3 days. They wash daily and bath every other day. Would be a daily shower but we dont have one.

Bogeyface · 29/10/2016 23:50

Oh and they never had bath and bed as babies either. It was so fucking traumatising for all of us! None of them enjoyed baths until they were 6 months or so, so I actively avoided baths doing a full body sponge down on the changing unit instead. They would be awake and screaming for ages after a bath.

DropZoneOne · 29/10/2016 23:50

DD is 8, bath and hair wash once a week. She could do with twice tbh, especially her hair, but it was absolutely fine when she was younger. She didn't get dirty or smelly.

smellyboot · 29/10/2016 23:59

Mine are almost the same is yours. Brief bath most nights as part of routine. Prob 5/7 Sometimes 5 mins some times a big long play in bath. Hair wash at swimming and once at weekend. No bath if it's late and we busy.
Anymore is bad for their skin.

SeenYourArse · 30/10/2016 00:01

God! My DS is 5 months and he has a bath every other day hair washed every bath time... His hair smells a bit greasy when I kiss the top of his head by the evening before bath time (every other morning) can't imagine older children being unbathed for longer than that.

Mine has a cloth wash most days and a bath 1-2 times a week. She has really bad excema so any more than 2 times a week and she is itching like crazy as all the natural oils have been washed away.
If she gets dirty then she has to have one x

SortAllTheThings · 30/10/2016 00:08

Yay!! I was washing the kids hair every other day. I've been slacking off recently and the little ones hair is looking much less crazy.

Every few days it is :D

NothingMoreThanFelines · 30/10/2016 00:24

DD (2) gets a bath and hair wash every night, We'd happily skip the hair washing if it weren't for her habit of storing baked beans in it.

ijustwannadance · 30/10/2016 00:27

Bath and hair wash on a Sunday. Bath or quick shower on a Wednesday without washing hair.

Pistachiois50pmore · 30/10/2016 00:30

DS is 9 months and we bathe him very infrequently. He gets a soaping and flannel wash after every poo or messy meal but only a full dunking every few weeks. He always looks and smells clean!

badg3r · 30/10/2016 00:47

DS (2) gets his hair washed once a week, whether he needs it or not Wink I do think it depends on the child though. I also never really use soap on DS's skin because he gets dry skin or a rash if I do, even with sensitive baby washes. But he never smells bad (I do check!).

Rockingaround · 30/10/2016 01:10

My mum sounds a bit like your MIL. We were in the bath every night and hair washed most nights, I attribute the absolute necessity of having to wash my hair every day because of this excess hair-washing. My kids are 6&3 and my DD has waist length hair, they have a bath most nights or a shower, once a week they might just make-do with a flannel, we only wash their hard once a week and both DD and DS have beautiful, shiny, healthy, hair. My DM washes their hair as much as she can when she/we visit - I get silent rage with this, along with her giving them biscuits at 8am Hmm I bite my lip however as we love 200 miles apart Grin

Rockingaround · 30/10/2016 01:10

Oh the irony "we live" and I suppose we do "love" too x

Bubbinsmakesthree · 30/10/2016 05:42

2 yo DS has bath most nights but I have literally no idea how often he has hair washed - DH and I alternate bath and bedtime duty and I only wash hair if it visibly needs it, which is perhaps only once a fortnight. DH might do it more or less often, I've never asked! DS hates having his hair washed so I minimise the trauma for all concerned.
