To wash hair once a week - disagreement with Mil!

Just wondering how often your DCs have a bath/shower and wash their hair? Mine (aged 5 and 2) have a bath most evenings - at least 5 out of 7 days a week - and wash with soap. Hair wash once a week on a Sunday.
Mil was horrified to learn that they don't have a thorough wash every single night and appalled that hair is only done once a week.
Now I'm beginning to doubt my routine..... AIBU?

Our DDs were bathed every night from being newborns. Just a few bubbles in the water, and just a drop of Infacare on a sponge to clean their bottoms. Hair washed every other night.

They never got especially dirty, but I found a nightly bath relaxed them, and they always smelt gorgeous Smile

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 30/10/2016 18:50

My DS was the same. Bath every night since he was a tiny baby. He's a teenager now and showers every day. When I think about how grubby my brothers were I'm very relieved.

ncayley115 · 31/10/2016 17:35

My son is 21 months. He has a bath and hair wash every night as part of his bedtime routine. If he's really tired then we skip the hair wash but this is unusual. We don't use soap, just a bit of Johnson and Johnson Lavender foam bath.

wineandtoastfortea · 31/10/2016 17:51

Never wash my two at night (6 and 2), bath and hair wash every morning.

b0ne · 31/10/2016 18:00

Our DD(3) only gets bathed about twice a week, hair washed each time. It's fine, she doesn't stink. If she's looking grubby, I'll wash her face and hands.

Every time my family and friends come from abroad they ask why adults and kids stink here . Now I found the answer: culture

brianna5 · 31/10/2016 18:39

We have a bath/shower daily can't imagine not washing daily as we do the same. To each his own.
But that works perfectly well in our house. Hair washed once a week and dats Afro hair as it need daily wash. Once - 2wks is normal

brianna5 · 31/10/2016 18:39

Sorry doesn't need a daily wash I meant for hair.

brianna5 · 31/10/2016 18:41

Can't imagine not washing my kids daily as we do d sameBlush

scrivette · 31/10/2016 18:48

Bath on a Sunday and Wednesday, hair wash on a Sunday. They are 1 and 5.

a7mints · 31/10/2016 18:56

I don't think once a week is enough.Their hair will pick up smells from their surroundings. You might not be able to smell it because you are accostomed

oblada · 31/10/2016 19:04

once a week for hair is definitely enough. I used to wash my hair once a week when I was a kid. I think we wash our hair way too much nowadays, it's not very good really. Shampoos are full of useless chemicals. My kids (5 and 2) wash once or twice per week and this is perfectly sufficient. My older one used to have a nightly bath as part of her routine but first I found it was taking too much of our time together in the evening (or had to be rushed) and most importantly she was getting skin irritations much more easily even tho we were using very little bubble bath/soap and generally as mild/gentle as possible. Now they have a great big splash in the bubbles once a week and they love it. If they need a quick wash in the interim they can have a quick shower!

MaQueen · 31/10/2016 19:08

When our DDs were tiny, they'd often get food/stuff on their hands then rub it in their hair.

Among our friends/family I could always tell the baby/toddlers who weren't bathed/had hair washed enough.

oblada · 31/10/2016 19:12

Maybe I should add that both kids religiously wash their hands after every meal - in their father's culture there is a lot of eating with your hands and they're free to do that if appropriate but they know to immediate go and wash up hands and face etc after each meal :)

alwayshappy101 · 31/10/2016 20:24

I bath and wash my DC'S hair every night.

KatharinaRosalie · 31/10/2016 20:31

The more you wash, the more it starts producing oil and the more you need to wash www.nytimes.com/2016/10/24/fashion/how-often-should-you-really-wash-your-hair.html

timelytess · 31/10/2016 20:41

bathing them too much??? Ffs!
A bath is lovely, splashy and soothing before bed. Daily, why not? If you have a warm bathroom and plenty of hot water, go for it.
Wash hair weekly - good. More often if it looks grubby or they're scratching.

chowchowchow · 31/10/2016 20:48

Mine have always had a bath every day. Hair wash every 2-3 days.
I like them having a bath in the evening, it's part of the bedtime routine and can chill them out

Picoloangel · 31/10/2016 21:01

I am with you OP. My DD washes her hair once a week and has a bath most nights unless we are in too late etc. Your routine seems fine to me and none of your MIL's business actually!

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 31/10/2016 21:12

Twice a week bath plus hair wash. Plus post (weekly) swimming shower and hair wash but that is all about de-chlorining them rather than anything else.

Used to bath Dd every day as thought that you should. Was told not to when I went to the doctor about her eczema when she was about 8 months. I think the phrase was "as little as you can bear!"

Neither of mine have ever been overly keen on baths (although they both love swimming - maybe I just need a very very big bath!) so it isn't worth it from a "nice relaxing routine" point of view.

ThinkOfTheMice · 31/10/2016 21:20

Advice has changed recently for eczema- a short lukewarm wash daily is recommended to stop skin cell build up.

I think washing hair once a week is not enough - ds gets a quick bath daily and if I only did his hair once a week he'd be smelling unpleasant

I remember kids at school who obviously weren't washed enough and they had a hard time with being teased.

2-3x a week for hair I think. Bath most nights, it takes five mins.

Maireadplastic · 31/10/2016 21:23

I have three boys with short hair. Hair is washed once a week.

Daydream007 · 31/10/2016 21:24

YANBU

Touchmybum · 31/10/2016 21:29

I bathed my first religiously every day. Ended up with dry skin and having to put Oilatum in the bath. #2 was probably every other day or so, had no problems with her skin. #3 got a bath sometimes when I remembered...

I think most of us have enough commonsense to know when a bath/shower/hair wash is necessary?

Stormwhale · 31/10/2016 21:33

Dd has a bath with hair wash most days. She is only three though and is potty training and dribbles in her hair when she sleeps. She would be stinky without washing her hair most days.
