Is it just me that cleans up hotel rooms before leaving ??!

Dp thinks it's odd, I bag up absolutely all rubbish, leave bins etc on counters, used towels will be put in the sink and if I have time i'll strip the bed.

In dps fairness he made the comment when I pointed him to the loo with a bottle of shower gel and wad of loo roll after he left a skiddy in their Blush but seriously, I can't be the only one who does this ?? Am I really the only one who would be mortified at the thought of someone tackling the remains of my breakfast in the loo bowl ??!

I make sure all rubbish is in the bin, towels are bundled on the counter ready to be changed over and that the shower, basin and loo are all hair and mark free. I don't strip the bed though.

I recently stayed in a very nice hotel for a work trip and was a bit mortified that the housekeeping service clearly didn't think my bed-making skills were up to scratch. I always make my bed - even if I'm away in a hotel. This particular establishment was quite naice and I hadn't realised that the housekeeping service would come in every day to turn down your bed for you. If I'd known I'd have made more effort with the hospital corners Grin

Sort of tidy. Certainly wouldn't leave a dirty look. Often leave some money with a note that it's for the person who cleans because I worry about how little cleaners get paid - if it's work travel. I'm much tighter on own travel even tho that doesnt make sense

ApproachingATunnel · 29/10/2016 22:24

I worked at a maid when i was younger. Putting everything in piles and bagging up rubbish definitely helps! Needless to say i do that too, it's not hard and saves the maid 15 mins

Chopstick17 · 29/10/2016 22:24

I leave it tidy as in I swish the bathroom sink, make sure loo is flushed and duvet folded back. No idea why, personal pride probably.

7SunshineSeven7 · 29/10/2016 22:26

I think its polite and lightens the load by making sure all rubbish is in the bin and beds are stripped etc. I always leave a tip, usually £10 depends how much I can afford and how long I stayed.

Do you clear the table in restaurants too OP?

This made me laugh, I always make sure at the end of the meal to get everyones plate and stack them up and leave cutlery on top so its easier for wait staff to take them away, I've found it helpful when people do this in my past jobs.

pensivepolly · 29/10/2016 22:27

Rubbish in bins, used towels in bathtubs. I pull the duvets up neatly but I would never actually strip the beds. And I always leave a daily tip for housekeeping.

2kids2dogsnosense · 29/10/2016 22:27

Youjust wouldn't

If you use preview before you post, you can edit (as I found out earlier today Grin )

2kids2dogsnosense · 29/10/2016 22:30

I do what you do.

Don't want anyone thinking I'm a dirty lazy arse, and am also not comfortable having someone else clean up after me and mine.

lapsedorienteerer · 29/10/2016 22:33

I leave it tidy but have never stripped hotel beds. I do however always strip beds in a self catering cottage/apartment, also empty bins, take out recycling etc.

megletthesecond · 29/10/2016 22:35

I've always had a tidy and straightened the room out.

Horsegirl1 · 29/10/2016 22:38

Fuck sake susan that's a bit mean suggesting people who clean up after themselves are not right in the head ?? just because you wouldn't do it does not mean it's wrong or means people are "not right in the head "

sofatrainer · 29/10/2016 22:39

I agree I strip beds, empty bins and tidy in SC but one of the utter pleasures of being in a hotel is not having to make a bed. There's nothing more lovely than getting into a freshly perfectly made bed and when I'm paying a small fortune to stay in a hotel I do kind of like to think that I don't have to do what I do at home.

" I always make sure at the end of the meal to get everyones plate and stack them up and leave cutlery on top so its easier for wait staff to take them away, "

you do that in a restaurant really? Do you scrape the leftovers off as well? Isnt that the point of going to a restaurant, to not have to do that stuff?

GreenPetal94 · 29/10/2016 22:49

I am running AirBnB in the annex off our house and I find most people leave it very clean and tidy and put the rubbish in the wheelie bin, but don't tend to strip the bed. I'd love it if they did strip the bed, but I would re-clean anyway.

Also as we are cheaper than a hotel, people also leave us presents from all over the world, we've had lots of yummy foods and interesting alcohol. And presents for the kids.

I've got a friend who does this and it drives us all mad. She does the whole "pass your plates to me!" thing so you have to grab someone else's gravy drenched fork and add it to your plate, stack plates and hand them down. Which takes away from the luxury of going out for a meal.

And having waitressed this would drive me mad too as the plates are never scraped properly so when you took them to the kitchen you'd have to scrape both the top and the bottom of each plate. Bleugh.

Utterly unhelpful.

60sname · 29/10/2016 22:51

I throw away rubbish and put the towels in the bath. Not having to do the other stuff is part of staying in a hotel.

Topseyt · 29/10/2016 22:54

I bin all rubbish as I go along. I leave towels in the bath. Nothing else.

Why pay for a service and then do all of the work yourself? Doesn't make sense to me.

I hate to say it, but I won't be the only waitress who has found this really passive aggressive in practice - as if you're making a point that the service has been so slow that you've resorted to self-clearing to speed things up. Particularly as, like queenbean said, it doesn't even really help unless you're a huuuuge table.

user1477427207 · 29/10/2016 23:03

..also, it is just bit naff tbh

limitedperiodonly · 29/10/2016 23:21

The only times I've done something like that is not to make a deliberate point but when I've been so fed up with a dirty plate left in front of me that I've moved it myself. It happens.

7SunshineSeven7 · 29/10/2016 23:29

Ah about the plate thing, I didn't mean if there was a few of us, I was talking big family meals where there's 10+ people and it must have been a headache for those working. The staff always seem to appreciate it. Only cleanish plates get put on the pile (nothing with gravy etc.)

Dixie How much food is getting left that its dripped down the plates?! Haha

As I said, only with basically clean plates, not in the middle of the table, to the end and only when I can see the wait staff is coming to collect stuff, for example there are so many of us they come to collect some and need to come back for the rest (usually where I go - mainly chain pub meals with big family gatherings- they appreciate it like I said, I did when I worked in that area so probably why I still do it) I think we don't worry about the ambiance because its a big family type meal in a chain pub so much more homely I guess.
Would never do it in someone elses house though! Shock

sofatrainer · 29/10/2016 23:50

There is nothing more irritating than being out in a restaurant and another person on your table starts stacking the plates. My FIL does this and it's incredibly embarrassing and sends quite a negative message to the restaurant that you're not happy with the service. I'm afraid that I think it's quite bad manners

MyWineTime · 29/10/2016 23:53

I put rubbish in bins as I create it, I don't wait until I'm leaving to clear it up. So there's nothing to do when I leave a hotel room other than pack.
