Dp thinks it's odd, I bag up absolutely all rubbish, leave bins etc on counters, used towels will be put in the sink and if I have time i'll strip the bed.

In dps fairness he made the comment when I pointed him to the loo with a bottle of shower gel and wad of loo roll after he left a skiddy in their Blush but seriously, I can't be the only one who does this ?? Am I really the only one who would be mortified at the thought of someone tackling the remains of my breakfast in the loo bowl ??!

Oh good, I'm glad I'm not the only person who does this. I don't strip the bed because quite frankly I'm a bit scared of what I'll find, but I always bin all the rubbish, put the towels in the bath and don't leave any obvious mess.

HateMrTumble · 29/10/2016 22:00

That's the cleaners job, included in the room cost you pay. Always leave as tidy as found, rubbish in bin but I wouldn't think of stripping beds etc.

TonaldDrump · 29/10/2016 22:02

I make sure rubbish in bin and loo clean but not more than that.

However, I always leave a tip, especially if I'm staying more than one night.

SenecaFalls · 29/10/2016 22:02

We often travel with our dog, and I do use a lint brush to get dog hair off the furniture. I leave a larger tip when we bring the dog.

MyGiddyUncle · 29/10/2016 22:04

Leaving your rubbish bagged and dirty towels in the bath/sink is just polite.

Stripping the beds or cleaning the bathroom is OTT IMO, that's part of the service i'm paying the hotel for.

limitedperiodonly · 29/10/2016 22:04

I read on a thread on MN that maids were afraid to take things left behind in rooms in case they're accused of stealing.

I go to Italy on business and am always given food and drink as presents. I take the dry stuff home but always leave the wine, balsamic vinegar and olive oil in the room because I can't put it in my hold luggage in case it breaks and ruins my clothes. It breaks my heart to leave it though Wink.

So now I leave a note in the room and in reception saying it's okay for the maid to take it. I don't know whether that works but it's better than nothing.

VeryBitchyRestingFace · 29/10/2016 22:04

I stay in hotels for work quite a lot. Rubbish in bins, towels in bath. I try to leave the place looking generally tidy. I will even er, assist by liberating the toiletries and rubber duckies.

Shock at stripping the bed (!)

Shock Hmm Shock at the £20 for the cleaner. (WTF??)

ANewStartOverseas · 29/10/2016 22:04

But you do realise that the towels in the bath thing is for when you stay for a few days so when y U come back they will have changed only the ones in the bath not all of them?
But when you do leave at the end of the stay, then they will change all the towels in the bathroom? How do you want to know otherwise if said towels have been used or not, because it so happens that the guests wants to help and has folded everything very neatly and put them back at their place for example.

Queenbean · 29/10/2016 22:05

I hope that anyone who takes a dog is only ever allocated a dog friendly room that the hotel makes clear may have been used by a dog if someone without a dog stays there

It's so gross staying in a room with loads of dog hair in it

sofatrainer · 29/10/2016 22:05

Can I just ask, tips? Is that standard? I've never left a tip in a hotel. Am I missing something. I'm embarrassed now

limitedperiodonly · 29/10/2016 22:07

I do take all the toiletries, towelling slippers, propelling pencils, notebooks etc in return for my bottles of extra virgin olive oil though.

TonaldDrump · 29/10/2016 22:10

I haven't stayed in hotels in the U.K. for a long time and I don't tip when I stay in European counties with a decent minimum wage like Germany, But in the US and in poorer counties, I tend to tip a couple of dollars a day.

MyGiddyUncle · 29/10/2016 22:10

Although saying that, I have stripped the bed when one of dc weed (thankfully there was a waterproof matress protector underneath). I don't think it's fair to not strip the bed when there's a 'surprise' hiding that an unwitting cleaner may put their hand on or something.

SenecaFalls · 29/10/2016 22:12

I think most hotels that allow pets do have assigned pet-friendly rooms. I know that sometimes when booking, I have been told that pet rooms are sold out. Also there are usually a lot of other pooches in neighboring rooms so I assume they put them all together. We used to travel with a cat as well, which of course requires a portable litter box. So we made sure all of that was cleaned up.

Downthepubofcourse · 29/10/2016 22:13

I own a small hotel, and while some people leave rooms tidy, there are others who are a little less careful. In the past I have had to bin mattresses, pillows and duvets because of vomit/urine incidents. I have had rooms unusable for a WEEK because they smelled so badly after someone stayed. We often have red wine/hot chocolate over the carpet with no attempts to mop it up. Vomit on the floor. it goes on and on...

Then there are the people who take towels never mind the toiletries. Frankly some people have no respect.

Others of course are wonderful and it is a true pleasure hosting them - and actually thankfully there are more of those!

grannytomine · 29/10/2016 22:13

I don't strip the bed but yes I do all the other stuff.

Horsegirl1 · 29/10/2016 22:13

I have always done this when staying in hotels but it's because of my own anxiety / fear of people thinking I'm un clean or lazy. IT'S ridiculous i know bit it's part of my anxiety and I prefer to leave the room immaculate. YES it's not my job buy it's not harming anyone and makes me feel satisfied

grannytomine · 29/10/2016 22:15

Downthepubofcourse, how awful. Disgusting to just expect someone to clear up like that. I would be ashamed.

1DAD2KIDS · 29/10/2016 22:15

I don't go to town but I do have a neaten up before I leave. I know I will never meet the cleaners in outside life and they don't know me personally but I just wouldn't want anyone thinking I am a total slob.

SenecaFalls · 29/10/2016 22:17

On tipping, I'm American so I tip anything and everything. Smile

FucksSakeSusan · 29/10/2016 22:17

Mumsnet really is a whole different world isn't it!

If I wanted to clean and strip beds, I'd stay at home. In a hotel I'm paying for a service - cleaning is included in that service.

Some of the PP I can only conclude are either not right in the head or don't regularly stay in hotels.

PollyPerky · 29/10/2016 22:18

Used towels go on the floor or in the bath- that's the unspoken 'rule' though premier Inns ask you to leave towels in bath.

I make sure the bins are closed and anything wrapped is out of sight.

I don't strip beds but will throw back the duvet to air it as I would at home every day.

I once stripped the bed at a holiday cottage we'd stayed at often for many years ( instructions asked you to) and have not returned due to seeing the horrible dirty state of the mattress cover. The thought of it not being changed as often as the sheets or at least when necessary, was revolting. It made my skin crawl to think I'd slept on something so stained and that the cleaners didn't think it needed washing.

SenecaFalls · 29/10/2016 22:19

Downthepub My daughter worked as a chambermaid at a nice resort during summers while a student. And yes, she did have stories about how disgusting some people could be.

NapQueen · 29/10/2016 22:20

I strip the bed. And all rubbish in the bin. And all the mugs/glasses in or next to the bathroom sink.

I work in a hotel though so have seen the shit tips lots of our maids get left and know the time constraints. 32 bedrooms in 8 hours including Suites, Executive Level, rooms with 2 doubles. Some stay overs. Most departs. They barely have time for lunch. And this is a 4star mahoooosive chain.

Motherfuckers · 29/10/2016 22:22

If I saw stripped beds in a hotel I would assume the guest had pissed the bed. I think the housekeeping staff would prefer a big tip to stripped beds and bins on the counter. Perhaps do that instead?
