Is it just me that cleans up hotel rooms before leaving ??!

Dp thinks it's odd, I bag up absolutely all rubbish, leave bins etc on counters, used towels will be put in the sink and if I have time i'll strip the bed.

In dps fairness he made the comment when I pointed him to the loo with a bottle of shower gel and wad of loo roll after he left a skiddy in their Blush but seriously, I can't be the only one who does this ?? Am I really the only one who would be mortified at the thought of someone tackling the remains of my breakfast in the loo bowl ??!

'Would a man do any of this? That's what we should ask ourselves.'

Should we?

All I ask myself is 'if I were a member of the housekeeping team would it make my life slightly easier if all the bits of rubbish were in the bin and all the used towels were in once place ready to be scooped up?'

Horsegirl1 · 29/10/2016 21:46

I always do. Ai strip the bed of sheets and leave them folded on end of bed , bag up rubbish and place towels on top of bedding. I also rinse out the bath sinks and make sure toilet is clean by whizzing over an anti back wipe . Then leave 20 quid on dresser for cleaner 😊

ANewStartOverseas · 29/10/2016 21:47

And I agree about the fact it's not that helpful for the staff anyway.
You might clean the sink/toilet but they will still do anyway.
You might put the bins on a table and they will end up looking for it where it should be because they will have developped an automatic sequence for doing things.
Towels in the sink will not make any difference if you are leaving. They will all be put to wash and the staff will still need to check that there is no towels anywhere.

TBH, it feels more like you feel unconfortable to leave the room in a mess because in some ways, you will be judge for it.

Ilovenannyplum · 29/10/2016 21:47

I tidy up but I don't strip the bed, that's a bit far

DesolateWaist · 29/10/2016 21:47

Would a man do any of this?

Well DH would but then he is only one man and doesn't represent all of the men.

squoosh · 29/10/2016 21:48

I do think stripping the beds is going above and beyond though!

Queenbean · 29/10/2016 21:48

Then leave 20 quid on dresser for cleaner

TWENTY QUID?? That's a ridiculously generous tip!!

SpookyPotato · 29/10/2016 21:49

I always leave them tidy but never clean, that's one of the perks!

OohMavis · 29/10/2016 21:49

I tidy any rubbish, make sure towels that we've used are in the bath so they know they've been used, make sure the bathroom's as I found it and make the bed loosely.

Stripping the bed seems a tad OTT though I have to say.

GabsAlot · 29/10/2016 21:49

my dp does alot but doesnt strip the beds

on one holiay in vegas i had a massive nosebleed out of the blue all over the bed looked horrendous

i left them a note aplogising an we left all our change for them when we left to be fair it was spotless when we came back that day

NattyTile · 29/10/2016 21:50

Stripping the bed and emptying the bins will slow down the housekeeping team and make their jobs harder, not easier! Because all the rooms are identical, they will have a rhythm and a routine of what they do and which order. It'll be a very speedy process they can do virtually on autopilot; if things aren't where they expect then that'll break the rhythm.

Rubbish in bens absolutely yes. Towels in bath or at least on bathroom floor; that's what most hotels ask you to do so great. Toothpaste out of the sink, something most of us do on autopilot surely? Wiping down surfaces a waste of time; they'll do that anyway. Ditto scrubbing loo and cleaning the bath tub.

But I would strip beds in self catering, and wipe down kitchen surfaces - that's one of the differences to me between SC and hotel.

limitedperiodonly · 29/10/2016 21:50

Would a man do any of this?

My husband does, I imagine he's not the only one. Both of us tidy things away during a stay because as DixieWishbone says, it makes it easier for the maid to clean and ensures that things won't get accidentally damaged.

I leave a tip because I learned it from him. Otherwise it might not have occurred to me.

wooooofudge · 29/10/2016 21:51

Do you clear the table in restaurants too OP?

I make sure I have my stuff with me and I use the bins during my stay, but other than that, I don't start cleaning the place.

PuppetInParadize · 29/10/2016 21:52

I'd make sure all the rubbish is bagged up/in the bin. I'd check I had all my belongings with me. And that's about it.

e1y1 · 29/10/2016 21:52

I do tidy - as in all rubbish in bin, clean loo and I refuse to use hotel towels, so they're not touched.

I don't strip the beds, though a friend who used to be head housekeeper at Malmaison always does strip the beds and has done every time we have shared a hotel room.

FurryLittleTwerp · 29/10/2016 21:52

I would never strip the bed in a hotel, unless there'd been some sort of accident.

I do strip the bed if I've stayed at a friend's, but I always ask if they want me to first. One friend hates piles of accumulating laundry, so prefers to do it herself over the next few days, if she can't get it straight in the wash.

squoosh · 29/10/2016 21:53

Why do you refuse to use the towels e1y1?

yougetme · 29/10/2016 21:53

I put the towels in the bath and rubbish in the bin just as a matter of course. It helps to make sure that things rent left behind if Ive cleared the spaces.

I dont strip the bed but on the advice of an ex chambermaid fellow MNer in a similar thread a while back I now fold the bedclothes back so you can see the bottom sheet. This is because there are often nasty surprises for chambermaids to be found in a made bed. And its never a period disaster either.

I dont consider leaving a tidy room to be beneath me no matter how much Ive paid .

bluebump · 29/10/2016 21:53

I sometimes do housekeeping at a 5* hotel, I have seen some rooms left in a right state!

If I stay anywhere I'd make sure all my rubbish was in the bin and all the towels are put together but I wouldn't think to strip the bed, I'd just leave it tidy.

eurochick · 29/10/2016 21:53

I put rubbish in the bin and make sure the loo isn't marked if they have left a brush. That's it.

e1y1 · 29/10/2016 21:55

I just can't use a towel someone else has used (I know it's irrational, and the towels will have been boiled to death in chemicals that we just can't get our hands on) but I just can't do it - have always taken my own.

PuppetInParadize · 29/10/2016 21:55

I would not move the bin onto the table. Shock It's a bit skanky IMO to put something that's normally on the floor onto a table or other surface.

ShelaghTurner · 29/10/2016 21:55

Towels in bath, obvious mess in bathroom wiped, rubbish bagged, bedclothes folded back but not stripped.

e1y1 · 29/10/2016 21:56

Sorry that was to squoosh

squoosh · 29/10/2016 21:56

Fair enough! Grin
