I spend a fortune each year on my favourite hobby and scour the 3 or 4 local ish theatres to see what's out there.

I have this week just discovered Rent and was blown away by the performance of Layton Williams. Singing, dancing, back flipping and doing the splits - all in three inch heeled red boots! Just wow. The ticket price was worth it for that itself!

So, what are your favourites (so I can find some new ones to watch)...?

last Wed I saw Murder Ballad- it was really good but not for me - a bit dark & sad
Next Sat I get to see Beautiful, 1st Dec Wicked & 8th Jan Rent

Squee!! i am so excited

Has anyone seen any Hamilton merchandise? DD 'needs' some for Christmas

ElizaSchuyler · 13/11/2016 21:13

Only extortionately priced from America - or home made on t shirt printing websites.

YouTheCat · 13/11/2016 21:13

I have tickets for the opening night of Young Frankenstein: the Musical in Newcastle in August.

Very excited! Grin

CoolCarrie · 13/11/2016 21:32

Beautiful The Carole King musical is brilliant, as was Jersey Boys.
Love Les Mis, My Fair Lady, Kiss Me Kate, West Side Story, Gypsy, The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, The Sound of Music, Oliver in fact there are very few I haven't been lucky enough to see and enjoy due to working in the theatre and having a great aunt who loved musicals in all shapes and sizes, from Gilbert and Sullivan to ALW. It's the staging, energy and bloody hard work that goes into the productions that is breathtaking, as well as the words and music that I enjoy.

Katymac · 13/11/2016 21:35

Ooo I just found a Hamilton calendar & an In the Heights song book on Amazon - that'll do!!

CoolCarrie · 13/11/2016 21:40

How could I forget Godspell! Saw it again twice last year at Edinburgh Festival , two different productions, brilliant.

zizza · 13/11/2016 22:22

I love musicals too!

Trying to remember everything I've seen (there's still loads I haven't but only really Lion King and Book of Mormon on my current wish list). Saw lots when the DC were early teens using the Kids Week in the West End deals and the odd one in the new year when they do the deals but regretted those on occasions when there are too many leads on holiday!

Joseph - my first musical when pretty young
Jesus Christ Superstar - next, in my teens

Then in no particular order:

Wicked (2)
Billy Elliot (2)
Les Mis (3)
Phantom (3)
Cats (3)
Miss Saigon (3)
Chicago (2)
West Side Story (2)
Rocky Horror (2)
Avenue Q
Mary Poppins
Evita
Five Guys Named Moe
Priscilla Queen of the Desert
We Will Rock You
Rock of Ages
Matilda (just last night - one of the best things I've seen)

Think that's it but I feel like there's something missing - I've surprised myself actually on how many I've seen! We've got friends who are performers (adults and children) so we do see things particularly when they're in them.

Interesting that I have no desire to see some of the "older" style of musicals.

zizza · 13/11/2016 22:28

Should've said what my favorites are, although that's tricky coz I like different ones for different reasons....

Matilda
Miss Saigon
Les Mis
Phantom
Cats
Billy Elliott
Wicked

Probably in that order :-)

SouthWindsWesterly · 14/11/2016 00:03

Les Mis
Book of Mormon
Matilda - love love love these three!

I saw Wind in the Willows the other week...don't bother 😞

MidniteScribbler · 14/11/2016 00:11

I should have added Jesus Christ Superstar with Tim Minchin and Mel C. That was brilliantly staged.

LavenderRains · 14/11/2016 00:48

I love a musical. Have seen and loved;
We will rock you
Jesus christ superstar
Billy Elliot
Mary poppins
Grease
Dirty dancing
chitty bang bang
footloose
sound of music
buddy Holly
beatles
Oliver
Ghost

CharleyDavidson · 14/11/2016 19:42

I haven't seen Ghost yet, but very much looking forward to it.

I saw Godspell as a young child, we were taken on a school trip so I only have vague memories of it.

I'd love to catch Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, or An American in Paris if they are ever touring as I love the movies. And Brigadoon. I clearly have my Grandad to blame for my love of musicals it seems.

CremeBrulee · 14/11/2016 19:48

I saw Ghost in the West End just before it closed and I really liked it. I'm a bit sniffy about some of the musicals adapted from big movies but this one really worked.

DD and I saw Seven Brides at the Regents Park Open Air Theatre last year. It was a wonderful evening of memorable songs with imaginative staging and some great dancing too. Definitely recommended if you ever get chance to see it.

Questionsmorequestions · 18/11/2016 20:50

School of Rock is really good and teens will love it. Matilda , fun but not the best. Lion King stunning , I liked Songs From the New World, Avenue Q had the entire audience throughout and shared the irreverent humour that is key to Book of Mormon . Les Mis is still a favourite but I preferred the original. I didn't like Miss Saigon as much but I think I went with wrong expectations.

Ruhrpott · 27/11/2016 17:41

I'm just about to watch starlight express Smile

BrokenRing · 27/11/2016 21:46

South Pacific
Newsies
My Fair Lady
Cabaret
Evita
Les Mis
West Side Story
The Boyfriend
Fiddler on the Roof
Godspell
Jesus Christ Superstar
Pippin
The Jerry Springer Opera

That's pretty much as good as it gets

Katymac · 27/11/2016 22:02

I saw Murder Ballad two weeks ago & while I enjoyed it I didn't really like it

I saw Beautiful last Saturday & Absolutley loved it

Off to see Wicked on Thursday squee

DanyellasDonkey · 27/11/2016 22:59

I don't really like going to watch shows apart from Joseph, Oliver and West Side Story. I could watch those over and over again. Love the songs from Les Mis but find the concept of it dreary and haven't liked any clips I've seen on TV

Katymac · 03/12/2016 19:44

Saw Wicked last week

OMG DD & I both LOVED it

& we went backstage & saw all the costumes (whcih were amazing)

So now she has another one she would love to be in!!

PrincessHairyMclary · 03/12/2016 20:24

My top ones are probably:
Les Mis
Aladdin
Wicked
Matilda

But I also love Lion king, 7 brides for 7 brothers and Charlie
