I spend a fortune each year on my favourite hobby and scour the 3 or 4 local ish theatres to see what's out there.

I have this week just discovered Rent and was blown away by the performance of Layton Williams. Singing, dancing, back flipping and doing the splits - all in three inch heeled red boots! Just wow. The ticket price was worth it for that itself!

So, what are your favourites (so I can find some new ones to watch)...?

SpaceDisosaur

I did mention Avenue Q. I love it.

Coroico97 · 29/10/2016 18:10

Oliver and, The Boyfriend.
Simply best songs ever - The Boyfriend lyrics a bit cringey though in 2016. Still love love love though.

OvariesForgotHerPassword · 29/10/2016 18:12

Charley I saw Rent this week too and totally agree, Layton Williams is outstanding. The whole production was just incredible!

I love Hamilton. It has taught me to rap Grin

OvariesForgotHerPassword · 29/10/2016 18:17

Matilda is on my must-see list.

I've seen -
Wicked (x2)
Rent
The Lion King (x2)
Shrek
Hairspray
Sound of Music
Grease
Avenue Q
Mamma Mia
We Will Rock You
Blood Brothers

and been in Little Shop of Horrors (voice of Audrey II whilst six months pregnant!) and Grease (Jan). I love musicals!

The King And I

Wins hands down for me (does the film count here?)

#Shaaaaaall we dance - da da da daaaa!# ..... that dress! :)

sorrelforbes you must be very local to us :) Another big vote for Half a Sixpence and for Groundhog Day (although it'll be a year or two before you can see that again)

JessieMcJessie · 29/10/2016 18:25

Haven't read the whole thread yet (bookmarking for later) but for me anything with tap dancing is a winner, from trad to the tap dancing Ku Klux Klan in Jerry Springer the Opera. a very fond memory is going to see Anything Goes in the West End with my late Mum (after pre theatre dinner in the Savoy Grill). That had some awesome tapping in it.

JessieMcJessie · 29/10/2016 18:27

Again don't know if mentioned yet but I love the Elaine Paige show on Radio 2 on Sundays just for the variety of stuff she plays (Elaine herself can be a bit irritating) and that has introduced me to a few new musicals over the years.

Garthmarenghi · 29/10/2016 18:38

All or Nothing - the story of the Small Faces is the best thing I've seen for years.

EvilTwins · 29/10/2016 18:53

Love musicals. Just seen Disney's Aladdin at the Prince Edward's - bit naff.

I love anything by Sondheim - Sweeney and Merrily are probably my faves though I also love Into The Woods (not the film) and Assassins. And Company.

Not an ALW fan. I like JRB - saw Parade at the Donmar a few years back and loved it.

Love Les Mis too. And am also a Hamilton obsessive. Grin

CaptainCallisto · 29/10/2016 18:56

I think Mack & Mabel and 42nd Street are my absolute favourites. Mabel Normand was definitely my favourite part to play. (My worst was Nancy in Oliver - I bloody hate 'as long as he needs me'!)

I also love:
Victor Victoria
Wicked
Les Mis
Anything Goes
Avenue Q
7 Brides
Crazy for You
Phantom...

I could go on!

Secretmetalfan · 29/10/2016 19:02

Les mis lost count of the amount of times I've seen it!

AllThePrettySeahorses · 29/10/2016 19:49

Shrek. First time I ever saw world class talent on the stage.

Most of the musicals we've seen lately are kids' ones, but we did enjoy We're Going On A Bear Hunt (didn't expect to, but it was great), The Gruffalo's Child, The Tiger Who Came To Tea and Rainbow Magic Fairies (that one because the Jack Frost actor was rather hot). The Panto Company's touring The Little Mermaid is great - saw that today.

jamdonut · 29/10/2016 20:17

Just seen the touring Little Shop of Horrors at our local theatre which was absolutely fantastic. Rhydian Roberts was fabulous in it, but so we're the rest of the cast.
Also seen the touring Blood Brothers, which I sobbed at, at the end, and Cats in Newcastle, which was also amazing.
To be fair, I love musicals, I just wish I could afford to go down to London to see them.
Luckily, my kids' school puts on very good productions, and my daughter has had good parts in them. They did a marvellous We Will Rock You, The Wiz, Joseph, Cats andLittle Shop of Horrors in recent years.

CharleyDavidson · 29/10/2016 20:50

I saw Shrek in Liverpool a couple of years ago. Thought it was very funny and loved the puppetry. Some of the dialogue (of whoever was playing Shrek in particular) was quite quiet though and hard to hear.

I've not seen Wicked or Lion King as I end up taking my children and when the tickets for even the not so good seats are £70+ it ends up adding up.

Sound of Music
Fiddler on the Roof
Les Miz, of course who doesn't love it. It was amazing how you could be sobbing one minute and in stitches the next!

Would luuuuuurve to see Wicked! [green]

daisychain01 · 29/10/2016 21:01

Has emoticon fail

Meant to be Envy

CremeBrulee · 29/10/2016 21:13

Wicked is amazing - lucky enough to have seen it twice, once as a birthday treat from DH and once with DD.

We saw Titanic the musical this summer in London and both loved it. Great vocal performances, very moving (nothing like the movie).

daisychain01 · 29/10/2016 21:18

I just asked DH if he would take me to see Wicked and he's said Yes sure. So we're going end November!!

PetalMettle · 29/10/2016 21:37

Wicked often comes up on last minute. I think we got tickets for £20.
I see I'm still the only dreamgirls fan!

user1471545174 · 29/10/2016 21:44

Oliver, of course.

Cabaret.

A Chorus Line.

Didn't like Miss Saigon or the awful one about Queen (awful story, music fine).

SorrelForbes · 29/10/2016 21:45

mrwalkensir can I tempt you into buying tickets Grin

I adore The Boyfriend (and it's sequel, Divorce Me Darling).

SorrelForbes · 29/10/2016 21:46
  • its grrrrÅ•
CremeBrulee · 29/10/2016 21:54

Shock how can people not like Miss Saigon! DD and I loved it in London and we went to the cinema screening of the 25th anniversary gala performance a couple of weeks ago. Amazing performance from Jon Jon Briones as the Engineer.

ToujeoQueen · 29/10/2016 22:10

Les Mis
Matilda
Blood Brothers
Miss Siagon are my favs.
