I spend a fortune each year on my favourite hobby and scour the 3 or 4 local ish theatres to see what's out there.

I have this week just discovered Rent and was blown away by the performance of Layton Williams. Singing, dancing, back flipping and doing the splits - all in three inch heeled red boots! Just wow. The ticket price was worth it for that itself!

So, what are your favourites (so I can find some new ones to watch)...?

I love cats! Have seen it so many times

cardibach · 28/10/2016 20:53

Soarkly Cats has always been shit (not a Lloyd Webber fan). I suspect you were just impressed by the spectacle as a child.

Oh I forgot Hairspray! My absolute favourite abuse of power as deputy head of year was allowing our Year 10s to stage Hairspray and The Producers without changing any of the rude humour or swearing. I'm sorry, but you will never get lines as good as "Hey little girl take me off your shelf/'cos it's hard having fun playing with yourself!" or "The biggest bathrooms at the Ritz/My showgirls had the biggest tits/I never was the pits in any way..."

I think we got away with it due to them being comedies. Plus, making fun of the Nazis is always popular.

cardibach · 28/10/2016 20:54

Whoops scoose! Sorry! It really is musically shit though.

Katymac · 28/10/2016 20:54

DD wants to be in Lion King, Hamilton & Chicago
Or maybe The Bodyguard, Kinkyboots, Cats, Thriller, Dreamgirls or Stomp - lets be honest she will audition everywhere!!

But disappointed she can't be in Once or Scottsboro Boys!

ShesGotAMapOfTheWorld · 28/10/2016 20:54

Also I loved Starlight Express (forgot that one).

BowieFan · 28/10/2016 20:54

I'd love to get Rocky Horror performed at school but I don't think we'd get it through. Maybe the Sixth formers could do it.

EverySongbirdSays · 28/10/2016 20:55

Did Once tour? I was dying to see it but it didn't come here.

Katymac · 28/10/2016 20:58

Once was really lovely

cardibach · 28/10/2016 20:59

YesThis I don't think you can call Les Mis modern anymore! Really modern musicals tend to be much smaller (except In The Heights and Hamilton, which are fab big shows). I like the more intimate shows like Once or Dogfight.

Scoose · 28/10/2016 20:59

Well I have seen it twice as an adult and I love it so different strokes for different folks and all that

Topseyt · 28/10/2016 21:00

Phantom of the Opera, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Joseph for me.

I did enjoy Lion King and Mary Poppins too, but then I am a child at heart. Grin

FlyingGaribaldi · 28/10/2016 21:01

Anything by Sondheim.

Wicked only really has two songs, though - 'Popular' and the big Betty 'Defying Gravity'...? I've took a visiting relative to it and was a bit baffled by the teenage fan mania.

PetalMettle · 28/10/2016 21:01

Another rent fan. It's on in London in case anyone wants to see it.
West side story is my favourite
I liked phantom and aspects (which I guess will never get shown again). Thought blood brothers was excellent.
REALLY looking forward to dreamgirls as I love the film
Did anyone watch smash when it was on? Would love to see a staging of bombshell

EllieMentry · 28/10/2016 21:03

Scottsboro Boys was heartbreakingly brilliant. Also really enjoyed Billy Elliot and Jersey Boys.

Loved Book of Mormon, and Kinky Boots was huge fun with amazing dancing.

Wicked was okay-ish but not for me. Cats was a bit meh.

I thought the set pieces in Matilda were great but I wasn't keen on all of it.

EllieMentry · 28/10/2016 21:04

Oh yes - how could I leave out West Side Story? That's possibly my absolute favourite.

CharleyDavidson · 28/10/2016 21:10

Rent is currently playing in the next town to me and we got tickets for a song! (Poor pun there, sorry).

It's in Liverpool soon for those who can't get to London but are interested in giving it a whirl.

DD would actually kill for a part in WSS - no exageration!!

Crispsheets · 28/10/2016 21:15

Just booked tickets to see Rent at Xmas.
Love In the Heights....can't wait for Hamilton.
Spring Awakening is my current favourite.

3luckystars · 28/10/2016 21:16

I love Fiddler on the Roof, the film. Then I went to see it on the stage and realised it was made to be there.
Absolutely brilliant it was.

Balletgirlmum · 28/10/2016 21:19

It might be easier to say which musicals I don't like (Cats would be top of that list)

Love :
Matilda
Book of Mormon
Miss Saigon
Beautiful
Hamilton
Les Mis
Wicked
Legally Blonde
Billy Elliot
Ghost
& loads more

Bea · 28/10/2016 21:21

Katymac · 28/10/2016 21:22

Wondered how long it would take you to find it BGM.....

Balletgirlmum · 28/10/2016 21:22
