AIBU to ask where 30 year old women shop

Loaferloveforyou · 25/10/2016 22:25

I haven't bought clothes for agggges! I've got some money to update my wardrobe and went back to my usual shop (can I mention it here?) and find that it's aimed at early to mid 20s.

I don't wanna spend loads but I do wanna look great and show of the 3 stone I lost

So can I be totally unreasonable and ask where 30-odd year old women shop who wanna look stylish but not like a 20 year old?

39 here, but love clothes, and am a tall size 8. I'm in the US, so not certain which if any of these brands are widely available in the UK, but I tend to gravitate towards Theory, Rag & Bone, Vince, Self-Portrait, Acne, Akris Punto on sale, and Free People if not too teen-at-a-festival. I mostly wear one-color bodysuits and grey or indigo skinny jeans with a funky flat (Nicholas Kirkwood right now).

Lollipopgirls · 26/10/2016 18:23

Oasis, River Island, ASOS, mainly.

Find Next and Fat Face, Joe Browns etc too mumsy for me personally.

Sciurus83 · 26/10/2016 19:01

ASOS, H+M, &Otherstories, Zara, Gap, Sainsburys for boots (I agree with posters loving their autumn range this year!). Ted Baker are probably my favourite store, I love Reiss and Whistles too but those stores are $$$ (by my budget at any rate!) so I scour outlets and eBay for them

LaBrujaPiruja · 26/10/2016 19:20

stopgap those brands are available here. Although the selection of Free People at asos and Selfridges is not good, so I tend to buy online.

OP, I like Odd Molly, Free People, All Saints, Hoss Intropia (the place to go for understated evening and party wear), HIGH by Claire Campbell (sale purchases only, too expensive), Maje, Sandro, Zadig & Voltaire, Claudie Pierlot, Manoush and Sybilla

For basics, jeans and plain tops, Zara, Bershka, Massimo Dutti and Boden.

I'm mid-40s, work in fashion/publishing and I've been told many times I'm very stylish. In a colourful way, not everybody would wear what I wear...

I also customise some clothes and accumulate garments; today I'm wearing an embroidered gilet bought in Hyper Hyper in the mid 1990s. I love all my clothes so keep them forever... Just in case. Only unloved items get the kick.

I sometimes worry I dress too young for my age but... I like it this way.

Marbo99 · 26/10/2016 19:55

I'm in my mid 30s and find uniqlo is good for quality basics at a low price. & Other Stories is like a slightly more grown up H&M, so a bit pricier but the quality is also a bit better (owned by the same people). Mint Velvet sales are often good value too. In defence of more expensive things, I have a couple of items from Me + Em, Baukjen (quality stretch fabrics) and Toast (clever tailoring) which carried me through a pregnancy plus a weight gain and loss over a spectrum of about four dress sizes and are still going strong!

allofthestress · 26/10/2016 20:30

Joe Browns, pull and bear, Lindy Bop, Joy, Trollied Dolly, asos, yumi

I pretty much always wear dresses and tend to go for very retro styles. I'm 32

jaykay34 · 26/10/2016 20:57

I tend to stick to the same few places.

For basics, I buy from Next (usually the sale or online clearance) - so plain tops, jeans and cardigans, and the odd work dress or shirt. I also buy Breton tops, cable knits and plain T-shirts from our local Ralph Lauren outlet.

Dresses are usually from H! by Henry Holland (they are quirky, flattering and timeless). I have loads - both winter and summer. I have also got some lovely jacquard skirts and kilts, and knitted, Peter Pan collar jumpers from there.

I do get the odd bit from Joules, H&M, New Look, Red Herring (Debenhams) and Dorothy Perkins.

I've probably progressed from my teenage years clothes wise, but to be honest, I'm either looking quirky or preppy - so I perhaps haven't quite developed a completely mature style yet. I and am not that experimental with different pieces - I tend to buy the same style in 20 different colours.

Thefishewife · 26/10/2016 21:09

Tesco , dorthey Perkins , Zara , warehouse

Tbh I do struggle asos is good

Polarbearflavour · 26/10/2016 21:42

Hobbs - mainly work dresses
White Stuff - mainly their A-line skirts
Oliver Bonas - nice dresses
Oasis / Next / M&S for tops and cardigans

LaPharisienne · 26/10/2016 23:12

33, size 10, tall with big knockers

Zara for coats and jackets, M&S (underwear only), acne for loads of stuff, top shop tall, H&M for basics, cos for carefully chosen tops (quality can be variable), Halston, diesel and new look for jeans (agree with PP on NL jeans - they're great), gap for white shirts, Saint Laurent when I has the monies, balenciaga in my dreams, Russell & Bromley very occasionally, all saints from time to time (with mixed results). Oh, and Isabella Oliver for nursing tops bc I'm still bf'ing.

I suspect the people you see who look "put together" have spent a bit of time and effort thinking about how they look, buying and planning outfits. So give yourself the licence to do that and enjoy the weight loss!!!

LaPharisienne · 26/10/2016 23:12

hairyhands suspect I would quite like to dress like you!

BeastofCraggyIsland · 26/10/2016 23:48

I'm 34, most of my basics come from H&M, although I like TopShop jeans. I like Superdry for hoodies and casual tops, and occasionally Jack Wills, Hollister or Abercrombie too. I have a few River Island bits but their recent stuff is all a bit too fashiony for me. Other than that I have a few things from New Look and a couple of tops and a really nice scarf and gorgeous pair of brown ankle boots from Fat Face. I wear a lot of outdoors/sports gear which is mostly from Cotswold Outdoor or Snow+Rock but that's probably not going to be most Mumsnetter's cup of tea Grin Prana and Lululemon do some nice tops/casual stuff as well as yoga/climbing/gym clothes though, I have tons of stuff from both of them.

harrietm87 · 27/10/2016 08:05

superfly you may have just described me...

AmyC86 · 27/10/2016 08:31

Wallis, Debenhams. Got the odd thing from warehouse, monsoon, sometimes can pick nice things up from matalan. Depends on your budget & style OP

BestZebbie · 27/10/2016 08:47

OP - in your situation I did a Debenhams personal shopper morning. For a few hundred I got about 15 items that all went with each other and were quite up to date. Now I have finished losing weight a year later I'm not gutted that half if it is now too baggy as it was quite cheap and I used it hard for a year, but half is still good, so I feel I got my money's worth.

YoHoHoandabottleofTequila · 27/10/2016 09:26

I buy Next jeans, otherwise I shop in apricot, oasis, white stuff, fat face, Dorothy Perkins and sometimes warehouse.

hollieberrie · 27/10/2016 13:30

I'm 37. Shop mainly at Mango, Zara, Gap, H&M
Online - bits of Hush, Whistles, Jigsaw and Boden (sale only as cant afford their full price stuff).
Ebay & charity shops are your friend. I get a lot of Hush, Boden, Jigsaw etc bits from there.
Also the odd bit of Topshop - again Ebay not the actual shops cos avoiding Arcadia - and the odd bit of Hollister - I like the knitwear.

hollieberrie · 27/10/2016 13:31

Oh yes, also Oliver Bonas! Love their stuff. I buy on Ebay or in the sale.

SeenYourArse · 27/10/2016 13:58

I'm 31 and I shop in Primark (great for throw away fashion the kind of thing you wear a few times then get bored of and charity shop it) and Next,Debenhams,Dorothy Perkins etc and I always browse the clothing sections at Asda and Tesco as they often have reall reasonably priced decent quality staples like jeans and tops for everyday wear. My favourite ever jeans I've just realised are from George at Asda they ar called WonderFit and are stretchy skinny ones that come in 3 leg lengths and about 6 colours including cropped length, they are the only off the peg jeans I Can buy that actually fit properly and are really comfy and properly skinny in my ankles! About £22 and wash really well

EmNetta · 27/10/2016 14:15

Am more than twice your age pet, and still get the odd item from New Look! Can't really recommend for you, as I've stopped wearing dresses for daytime, but have learned over the years that the only clothes to buy are the flattering ones, where ever I find them (and my shops have all been recommended here a few times already).

eastwestsouth · 27/10/2016 16:06

Congrats on the weight loss.

I mainly shop in H&M, Boden, Joules, Anthropologie and Mint Velvet but have been known to find some great bits in Sainsbury's & Next too.

Freeda86 · 28/10/2016 10:28

river island for the win!

bealos · 28/10/2016 11:04

I'm late 30s...

I get a lot of my clothes from charity shops and clothes swap parties - so I have a good mix of vintage (think Jaeger tops for £2!) and high st.

I've ended up buying a lot of darker clothes (black tops, navy shirts, etc) for work recently and bought these from Next, H&M, etc.

John Lewis is good as it has so many different brands within it and generally feels a calmer shopping experience to elsewhere, especially if you have kids in tow.

I still shop in Topshop (mostly because clothing should still be fun! and their sizing suits me well) :)

Monki is a good new online shop on the scene.

I eye up things in catalogues that get popped through my door from Hush, Boden, Toast, etc but never really buy anything from these places (apart from amazing brushed cotton pyjamas from Hush).

RingOfFire79 · 28/10/2016 11:44

I'm early 30s and I do: Baukjen, Zara, Reiss, The Fold, Reiss, Hush; I think they're all pretty stylish (The Fold is amazing for work, Baukjen and Hush are great for casual clothes). I know that none of them are cheap but I don't buy clothes very often - when I do, I like to shop at these places. And I think it pays off; I'm still wearing the same LK Bennett dresses and Reiss coat that I bought 8/9 years ago. Same with the LKB courts and my Russell and Bromley boots (the latter now going on for 11 years old!)

bananafish81 · 28/10/2016 12:11

I'm 34 and I now don't understand the fashion in places like Topshop and ASOS, and find all the materials really synthetic and flammable - where I used to get all my clothes

I now am clearly of that age.

I get soooo much stuff from Uniqlo. Also love & Other Stories, hush and Cos
