AIBU to ask where 30 year old women shop

Loaferloveforyou · 25/10/2016 22:25

I haven't bought clothes for agggges! I've got some money to update my wardrobe and went back to my usual shop (can I mention it here?) and find that it's aimed at early to mid 20s.

I don't wanna spend loads but I do wanna look great and show of the 3 stone I lost

So can I be totally unreasonable and ask where 30-odd year old women shop who wanna look stylish but not like a 20 year old?

Sainsbury's, John Lewis (lots of good concessions - I like Warehouse). Also like Joules, Next etc.

I love bargains and buy most stuff in the sales or second hand.

I'm a creature of habit. I have certain shops for certain things.

FasterThanASnakeAndAMongoose · 25/10/2016 23:12

manic - I find that with Zara too! I always pop in if I'm passing but can never find anything I like that suits me.

OdeToAutumn · 25/10/2016 23:13

I'm 32 I mainly shop in Zara, River Island, H&M, ASOS, sometimes Oasis and Topshop

ILikeyourHairyHands · 25/10/2016 23:21

Well I think we need to know where your usual shops were before we can guide you further.

What do you like to wear?

I'm in my 40's and wouldn't be caught dead in half the brands mentioned.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 25/10/2016 23:21

(And how much cash have you got?)

manicinsomniac · 25/10/2016 23:25

Weird isn't it, Faster - it's like there's some secret branch of Zara somewhere that I can't find.

Hairy - fine then, what do you like Grin

GinAndShoes · 25/10/2016 23:26

I'' 24 but probably dress like I'm in my 30's?! (Blame the 3 DC!!)
I mostly wear Next, Boden, Joules, Zara, Jack Wills, Toast, Fat Face, White Stuff and Fenn Wright Manson.

GinAndShoes · 25/10/2016 23:27

*I'm

Pinkgeek · 25/10/2016 23:32

Oasis is my fav at the moment - beautiful colours and patterns.
I love Laura Ashley too but can be pricey. They seem to be having a lot of sales at the minute so I take advantage of that.

DrunkOnEther · 25/10/2016 23:33

I used to love Sainsbury's clothes, but the couple of bits I've bought recently seem to be crap quality - they look really worn after just a couple of washes.

I'm really struggling with clothes atm. I've also lost weight - down from a size 22 to a size 16 (or occasionally 18, depending on boob space!). I almost always wear dresses, and just can't find any anywhere. I just want some nice, just above the knee dresses that aren't either skintight all the way down or ridiculously shapeless and tent-like.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 25/10/2016 23:33

Me?, APC, MiuMiu, Whistles, Joseph, Goat, Marni, YSL (when funds allow), Winser London and Me&Em for basics.

Pared down shapes in quality fabrics really.

I'm a simple soul.

manicinsomniac · 25/10/2016 23:42

Are they simple? I've only heard of Whistles and, in my mind, it's quite high end (but then I did have an unshakeable love for Hollister till I was about 28!)

Simple but pricy perhaps (ie, proper classy Wink )

Loaferloveforyou · 25/10/2016 23:47

Thank you all so much for your input.

My usual clothes shopping is new look and its been about 4 years since I went there. Still uncomfortable shopping in 'RL' but after looking online all the new look clothes models seem so young (all cropped tops and body con dresses)

The 3 stone is the tip of the iceburg, still puts me in size 18 (16 if I hold my stomach in and haven't eaten carbs in 2 days). Still losing weight so I need clothes that fit, but not too expensive as fingers crossed they won't fit for long.

I have read all your messages and thanks for the well dones, and as I said, feeling great but lots more to lose. Someone asked my regular shop- it's new look (wasn't sure if I was able to mention this before) and i will still shop there for basics (tights, leggings underwear etc). Not many people mentioned new look for clothes shopping and it kind of confirmed my fears that it's too young for 30-ish women

I'm 35. Most of my current wardrobe is from Primark, H&M and charity shops.
I do get stuff from Zara and Oasis, but usually only in the sale.
I despise Boden, Joules, White Stuff etc. So boring.

Loaferloveforyou · 25/10/2016 23:48

Also, Drunkonether congrats on the weight loss. Not easy is it?

EssentialHummus · 25/10/2016 23:51
  1. Gap and Zara with outbreaks of Sainsbury's.
Loaferloveforyou · 25/10/2016 23:52

I mostly wear dresses (I'm a simple soul, easy to put together with tights and leggings) I'm also starting a new job with a professional outlook so I want clothes that suit the role (client facing a possibility) but not too expensive as they will hopefully be too big in the next month or so.

I've heard a lot of Oasis, Tara and H&M so I will try those out.

Thanks so much everyone

Bumplovin · 25/10/2016 23:52

Joules for casuals and French connection for dressy

NapQueen · 25/10/2016 23:53

Sainsburys (a recent discovery) especially for jeans and leggings

H&m

Primark

Can't remember a time when I bought anything from a shop other than these three.

Queenbean · 25/10/2016 23:56

HairyHands those brands you've mentioned aren't "simple", sounds like the stealth boast of a 40-something with more disposable income than us simple early 30-somethings Wink

Loaferloveforyou · 25/10/2016 23:59

Ah sainsburys. I remember I bought a jumper from there about 8 years ago. I absolutely loved it. It was so cosy at the beginning and so familiar once it had been washed a few times. I chucked it when I gained weight thinking I'd never fit in it. I'm gutted about it and it cost me £10! X

ILikeyourHairyHands · 25/10/2016 23:59

Loaf, if you're still loosing weight I guess the temptation is to hold off until you stop, (huge congratulations on your progress), BUT, I think it's important to buy for the size you are, rather than the size you want to be.

So, given that, what do you want to look like? What's your style? How do you want to look? It's all very well suggesting shops, but they all offer very different things, I have a very pared down look, but others go for more ornamentation or quirk.

Who are you? What's your hair like? What's your lifestyle?

People here are so very helpful, give us more and we can advise better.

I don't think New Look is definitely too young for your age, no shop is, it just depends how you want to look.

(And your budget of course, if you're still losing weight and have a few hundred to spend on yourself then I would go for maybe three of four decent items that will make you feel great rather than spreading it around on loads of cheaper stuff).

Dontpanicpyke · 26/10/2016 00:00

Hi op I am 51 and had no idea I had to shop by my age. Grin

My favourites are new look, primark, forever 21 and Jane Norman.

Would rather eat shit than wear Boden or M&S and never see anything nice in Zara.

Well done on your weight loss. Smile

Loaferloveforyou · 26/10/2016 00:04

Queenbean I wasn't clear on the budget. Something simple and cheap for someone is expensive for another. Could be a stealth boast, could be a genuine cheap/reasonable shop for that PP. I'm super cheap (apparently) when it comes to clothes just bought a £60 coat I um-ed and ah-ed about for a few days. That could be seen as being cheap for some people, but an unimaginable expense for others.

Massimo Dutti.. clothes look posh but not so expensive. They're owned by Zara. Classic colours like black, caramel, white.
