AIBU to ask where 30 year old women shop

I haven't bought clothes for agggges! I've got some money to update my wardrobe and went back to my usual shop (can I mention it here?) and find that it's aimed at early to mid 20s.

I don't wanna spend loads but I do wanna look great and show of the 3 stone I lost

So can I be totally unreasonable and ask where 30-odd year old women shop who wanna look stylish but not like a 20 year old?

I'm 42. And don't spend much on clothes but apparently look stylish?!

I get: jeans from New look, seriously it's the only reason I go in there. they fit brilliantly, last well and look far more expensive than they are...if you're in a transition phase 're weight loss and don't want to spend loads, I highly recommend.
(Tops from zara, h&m, mango. I buy in my "colours" and stick to styles I can get away with. That bits important!!)

GoofyTheHero · 26/10/2016 06:23

Jeans from Topshop (theyre the only jeans that fit me!)
Basics from New Look, H&M and Gap
Warehouse
Zara
ASOS

I also think this years autumn/winter range at Sainsburys is grim

YoHoHoandabottleofTequila · 26/10/2016 06:28

Apricot is still around! It's one of my favourites.

user1471545174 · 26/10/2016 06:45

The same as everyone else and I am mid 50s Grin

PP who said proportion and style more important than source is correct.

As Sainsbury's has polarised opinion this year, my view FWIW is that this year's collection is really awful.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 26/10/2016 06:47

At your age Age and size I would hot foot it to Zara !!!

QuilliamCakespeare · 26/10/2016 06:52

Early 30s here. I mostly shop in Oasis and Fatface but also venture into Topshop before leaving because it's too trendy. Zara is also pretty good and I buy bits from H&M sometimes (especially maternity).

QuilliamCakespeare · 26/10/2016 06:53

Oh and Gap!

myownprivateidaho · 26/10/2016 08:40

Personally - Zara, Kooples, Maje, Sandro, Zadig and Voltaire. TBH I pretty much only buy in the sales or second hand (except with Zara) but I still spend way more on my clothes than I ever used to.

HyacinthFuckit · 26/10/2016 08:43

Today I'm at work and wearing Clarks chelsea-ish ankle boots, M and S office trousers (sensible) cos top and Hobbs coat (naice, but ebay) Zara scarf and accessorize earrings (frivolous). Yesterday was not at work and wore nasty old converse that needed replacing eons ago, George jeggings and cheapo Tesco cashmere (also ebay).

I use New Look sometimes too OP. Also H and M, Boden when the sale's on, Tesco. Must check out Sainsbos too.

AuntieStella · 26/10/2016 08:58

I shop in New Look and am in my 1950s.

If you drop age-based stereotypes, then a lot opens up to you.

Other places I buy clothes regularly include Uniqlo, Primark, TKMaxx, George and John Lewis.

I think what's coming through on this thread is that there are no specific shops to shop in for specific ages. It's more about what works for you. Go shopping with an open mind and plenty of time. Browse everywhere. For instance I don't normally shop in new look but will occasionally pop in and although 90% of the clothes aren't me I may find one piece that becomes a staple. And remember the collections each season can really change a shop, for the last about 5 years I've bought about 80% of my wardrobe I. Warehouse. This year nothing. I just don't like the collection, however Zara's winter collection is very me.
And off the back of this thread I'm checking out Sainsburys!

MyGiddyUncle · 26/10/2016 09:18

NewLook, Dorothy Perkins, Matalan, Primark, Tesco, Asda, ASOS, EBay, Debenhams, Warehouse, Zara, Gap and loads more...whereever I see something I like, that's good quality and a reasonable price.

I never get it when people say 'Oh I get all my clothes from X, X and X'...it must be really limiting!

pinkhorse · 26/10/2016 09:22

Definitely no to Sainsbury's. even my mum says she's too young for there!
I like H&M, joules, Barbour, Levi jeans, house of Fraser. Have fun!

Kikibanana86 · 26/10/2016 11:18

ASOS, river island, top shop, sometimes boohoo but the quality isn't great but good for short term trendy stuff.

I look younger than my age and I lddont want to look mumsy yet, 30 isnt even old!

SuperFlyHigh · 26/10/2016 15:30

My SIL likes:-

COS
Whistles
Comptoir des Cottoniers
Anthropologie
H&M
Zara
Natura (Spanish based shops all over Spain and the Spanish Islands)
Calzedonia
Intimmisi
Office

SuperFlyHigh · 26/10/2016 15:30

SIL is 34

SuperFlyHigh · 26/10/2016 15:30

oh and ASOS and used to like Top Shop too

BlueFolly · 26/10/2016 15:31

YABU

SuperFlyHigh · 26/10/2016 15:32

Oh she has also started to get the odd thing in Oasis - partly because I used to shop in there because there was one in the High Street where I used to work - not now sob!

SuperFlyHigh · 26/10/2016 15:32

I forgot - she quite likes Vero Moda too

harrietm87 · 26/10/2016 15:46

29 here. Cos is my absolute fave! &otherstories also good. Also Zara and occasionally h&m and primark. I feel like topshop is h&m quality but twice the price so don't shop there anymore. Lots of my work stuff is from m&s, and whistles/jigsaw/Hobbs for suits etc

Ketsby · 26/10/2016 15:48

Hollister, Forever 21, Jack Wills, Zara, Mango.

SuperFlyHigh · 26/10/2016 16:43

HarrietM my SIL and her SIL love COS but not keen on &otherstories whereas a colleague of mine his fiancee who's in her early 30s loves &otherstories.

SIL's SIL is very much a Hackney hipster tho.

anotheronebitthedust · 26/10/2016 17:54

28 and shop warehouse, oasis, dorothy perkins, h&m, topshop (only in sale/ebay because agree it is £££ for shit quality) occasionally new look for basics like cardigans/cheap loafers. Even primark for cheap tops (find their dresses, trousers etc are awful, unflattering fits). Got my perfect work trousers from asda!

The only thing I personally would disagree with from all the examples above are things like Jack Willis, Abercrombie and Fitch & Hollister - to me anything with a visible brand (not designer) screams 15 year old wearing brands to show how cool they are before they've developed their own style. Even their shops are blatantly designed for teens. Could be different if you have more of a leisure/sporty style I suppose but not if you're trying to look smart at all.

I think most people from 20-mid thirties dress fairly similarly - the only thing that would stand out to me as looking inappropriately young would be anything other than a) crop top or b) top with slogan/logo on it c) hoodie for anything other than v. casual wear - anything else go for it!

Amummyatlast · 26/10/2016 17:57

I'm limited in where I can buy clothes because I'm slimmer than most, and women my size tend to be in their teens/early twenties. I tend to shop at H&M and New Look. I always look in Next, but haven't bought anything there for years.
