AIBU to wear a tight pink body con dress when I'm 40?

Hi,
Please let me know what you think. I'm going to a christmas party for my husbands work do at a country house hotel where everyone gets dressed up. I'm 40, good figure, good hair, not so good face. AIBU to wear this tight pink Karen Millen body con dress? Or is it too young for me? My husband thinks so......I'm prepared for harsh remarks - I'd rather get them online than on the night!!! Thanks!!! ( I do have a black bolero to cover up with to start off the night).

Nothing to do with your age or size but for that price you could do a lot better. That dress was kicking around about six years ago (I tried it on as a potential bridesmaid dress) so looks quite dated now. I would try and find something else.

Delatron · 25/10/2016 22:25

The dress is really overpriced! Have a look on ASOS, they have a good variety and quick, free delivery. eBay seems very expensive for second hand dresses..

TheWitTank · 25/10/2016 22:32

Not too old at all! The dress isn't something I would wear as it is a little dated and I feel it might be a bit unflattering in that material and colour -but if you love it, then you get it! I would be tempted to hunt around a bit though as it is quite pricey for a second hand KM. Hope you have a fabulous time at the party in your new dress Smile

Sugarlightly · 25/10/2016 22:35

Don't listen to people saying size 14 is too big for a bodycon style!! I'm a size 22 and look great in bodycon dresses

Shakirawannabe · 25/10/2016 22:50

I would say it's fine for whatever age, if you have the figure definitely wear it

JoJoSM2 · 25/10/2016 23:18

Colourwise, you don't need to go for red (again) - just any winter colour, i.e. darker blue, green, brown, purple etc. Or even winter white (braver option).

blankmind · 26/10/2016 00:27

Have a look at the third photograph, it's of the back.

The diagonal seams don't match up either side of the zip, they should. At the top of the zip the fabric isn't level.
There's something wrong, it shouldn't fasten like that.

In the 5th photograph, the seams appear to match (you can see one lot between the labels) and the top of the zip looks level.

That would put me off.

PickAChew · 26/10/2016 00:31

It's a bit flesh toned.

PickAChew · 26/10/2016 00:37

And yes, the finish is poor.

MargotLovedTom · 26/10/2016 00:45

OP - what if you don't like it when it arrives and you can't return it? You'd have all the faff of selling it yourself to try to recoup some money.

chipsandpeas · 26/10/2016 07:29

i have that dress, its been sat in a cupboard for 3 years, its very small made, the 14 is more like a 12

Trifleorbust · 26/10/2016 07:41

Not going to win any points for this but I wouldn't wear something to my husband's work Christmas do that he thought made me look daft because I was too old for it Blush

Yes, you can of course wear what you like, wherever you like, but these are his colleagues and it will probably make him feel awkward.

That aside, I don't think it's a great dress. It is a bit of a mash up of 'young' colour (baby pink) but more dated detail (black trim) and the straps look a bit stuck on.

A little more money would get you something much nicer from Phase Eight or Coast.

BIWI · 26/10/2016 08:19

JoJoSM22

Are you for real?!

If your husband doesn't think it's appropriate, I wouldn't wear it - no point making dh feel uncomfortable/awkward/embarrassed around all his work colleagues

Talk about surrendered wife!

This is 2016. Women wear what they want, to please themselves.

BikeRunSki · 26/10/2016 08:23

I would;t wear it and I'm 45, but I would;t have worm it at 25 either. It's just not a very nice dress, especially for £85!

Trifleorbust · 26/10/2016 08:38

Generally I do wear what I want. But my husband wouldn't say anything unless he felt really uncomfortable, and for his work colleagues I would make an exception.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 26/10/2016 08:43

I agree with the finish being poor.

If you like it though, then get it.

wtffgs · 26/10/2016 08:47

I hate the dress but I love the fact you are body-confident. Please wear whatever the hell you like and have a great time! Wine

JoJoSM2 · 26/10/2016 10:16

BIWI would you just spite you dh to make a point? At his own work do? If I was your dh, you wouldn't get an invite next year... And yes, I like my husband to feel that he is accompanied by a gorgeous woman in a fab dress. Btw it works both ways.

PoppyBirdOnAWire · 26/10/2016 10:18

I thought a "bodycon" dress was stretchy and nasty.

Dozer · 26/10/2016 10:22

Your H is BU.

I really dislike the dress, mind you. Colour, material, fringing bit. 90s stylie. Wouldn't call it "bodycon", more "classic".

I am size 14, BMI 25, and (IMO) look good in bodycon!

UntilTheCowsComeHome · 26/10/2016 10:22

You're not too old or too big but by god that dress is awful.

It looks like something made by an art student in 1997.

If you're spending that kind of money on a dress for you, you deserve something much nicer.

Liiinoo · 26/10/2016 10:25

If you have the figure and confidence for a bodycon dress, age shouldn't be a barrier. However, I agree with other posters who are saying not that particular one!

If you go for another bodycon style I would say watch the length. Bodycon can look amazing at any age, but short bodycon if you have middle-aged saggy knees (and you may have lovely knees for all I know) it looks awful.

Thefitfatty · 26/10/2016 10:30

I'm not one for pink and lace, but the style is fine. I would wear it in a solid color (in a 14 as well and rock it thanks!) . Your definitely not to old.

WooWooChooChoo · 26/10/2016 10:32

Forty is not too old for a nice fitted evening dress! I am 37 and wouldn't think twice about wearing a well made sheath dress for an evening occasion.

I wouldn't personally wear the dress in your photo but mainly because it is a very difficult colour to wear well, especially for someone with my colouring (pale and covered with freckles!).

WaxingNinja · 26/10/2016 10:39

Bodycon dresses in flesh colours flatter hardly anyone.

Go for something more vibrant. That particular dress isn't nice at all.
