Another neighbourly dispute, same neighbours that claimed our cat was teasing their dog, and the same neighbours who accused us of stealing blackberries off their bush that happened to grow over my fence.

Well if I hadn't thought they were ridiculous before, I definitely do now.

Woke up this morning to find a note through the door saying they have had a new piano delivered and due to space they were limited on places it could go indoors (not our problem) they are saying where they have placed it is under a window and their view from the piano is a large oak tree which is in our garden. Their problem is that they are saying the many birds nests that are in this tree are distracting and these wild birds are making too much noise therefore distracting them from the piano.

There isn't even a suggestion in the note of what they'd like us to do about it. Not that I would even consider taking any action towards the tree but FFS what on earth are they doing? They don't have a bloody leg to stand on??

Best thread EVER!!! Grin

*flippin not flippinot!

CockacidalManiac · 20/10/2016 08:35

Do you live next door to John Shuttleworth?

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 20/10/2016 08:40

I agree in NOT getting a TPO on your tree.
You can't prune so much as a branch without permission and the fines are phenomenonal.

I would definitely complain about piano practice before 7.30
They should have got a smaller electronic board with earphones

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 20/10/2016 08:41

I wouldn't worry.
Andy will get bored with piano after a few months

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 20/10/2016 08:41

They sound completely batshit.

I would ignore it, and if they bring it up again, give them a copy of that birds/wildlife law a pp posted.
You might also get the council to slap a preservation order on the tree, in case they start on at you to have it cut down.

Dh once did this after a neighbour had actually started having trees that weren't strictly on his own land, but in communal areas, cut down.
Dh had to pay the tree cutters to go away, but the council tree officer was brilliant - came v quickly and slapped orders on them.

Neighbour was royally pissed off with us for quite a while.
But the tree they'd started hacking recovered very well.

ParForTheCourses · 20/10/2016 09:52

You definitely need to not humour them after this op even if they are bonkers and it's so petty and weird it's amusing. It's only a matter of time before its something not amusing and makes you uncomfortable.

Neighbourly relations are one things but these neighbours want you to bend over and hand them the lube!

OriginalBlonde · 20/10/2016 10:21

Speak to the Planning Dept at your LA, it's easy enough to find out if there is a TPO on your magnificent oak. If not, speak to the officer in charge of this area to see how one can be obtained.

Andy sounds bonkers, his wife sounds bonkers. The problem is this could easily become less amusing over time. I'm sitting hear now, surrounded by trees and can hardly hear any chirping. If I was playing a piano I'm damned sure I'd hear nothing but that! Silly people.

Carry on as you are OP.

OriginalBlonde · 20/10/2016 10:23

Actually, if there isn't a TPO it might not be so much in your interest to obtain one as you'd need permission to do any work to it.

CoughingForWeeks · 20/10/2016 10:28

Complaining about birds' nests in October? Oh they'll have a field day when spring arrives then. Please make sure that you festoon the tree with nesting boxes and bird feeders to encourage maximum feathered visitors

MagikarpetRide · 20/10/2016 10:29

Ooh make a note of all the times he plays his piano in unsociable hours then go to the council. I'd love to hear what they say when they get a noise complaint letter Grin

Lilianna123 · 20/10/2016 11:17

It's all come to a head... Andy has now come round telling us not to listen to his wife and that she doesn't understand quite how important it is to him that he gets his piano playing time undisturbed.

He said he will look into where he stands and be in touch!

We laughed in his face and slammed door

Shock

I would seriously start looking in to a report for harassment...

This is taking batshit to a whole new level!

LeninaCrowne · 20/10/2016 11:24

Sad to say it sounds like Andy either has mental health issues or the start of dementia.

Did he voluntarily leave his city job or did he retire for health reasons?

Sounds like his wife doesn't agree with his ideas - I bet he makes her life difficult, poor woman.

Morporkia · 20/10/2016 11:24

www.gov.uk/report-noise-pollution-to-council playing piano at 7am is completely unacceptable! as is Andy's attitude. although this thread has kept me amused most of the morning so thank you Flowers

acatcalledjohn · 20/10/2016 11:26

I do agree with Lenina re the MH/Dementia suggestion. It is a level of batshit that does not come from a sane person.

TheLegendOfBeans · 20/10/2016 11:26

Hate to say it but I'm echoing what Lenina says.

HOWEVER; he could just be a twat.

MummaGiles · 20/10/2016 11:28

Apologies if someone has posted this already (not RTFT) but you need to read The Magpies by Mark Edwards. Then you won't think your neighbours are so bad.

Cisoff · 20/10/2016 11:29

Suggest his wife dresses as a scarecrow and stands just outside the window every time Andy wants to practice.

Job done.

OnionKnight · 20/10/2016 11:29

He sounds like an absolute knob.

WatchingFromTheWings · 20/10/2016 11:33

The birds need to send a letter advising they will be reporting him for badly playing the piano so early.

Bubblebloodypop · 20/10/2016 11:33

I also think maybe dementia could be playing a part here, that doesn't mean you stand for being harassed though.

Backingvocals · 20/10/2016 11:37

oh dear. Sounds like there is something serious going on.

Soubriquet · 20/10/2016 11:41

Should have said to him that you will look into where you stand with nuisance noise at unsuitable time before slamming the door in his face

LeninaCrowne · 20/10/2016 11:43

I would keep out of it, as much as you can. My PIL's had neighbours who suddenly turned batshit. PILs started ignoring them, then tried to get help for them from their GP (nothing doing for data protection/next of kin reasons) and the council etc (no help either).

Sadly, it transpired the neighbours both had early onset dementia (they were married cousins and it ran in their family).
