We chased some sheep!!

I never let my kids chase pigeons in town or torment our cats or dogs. But today I actively encouraged my adult dd to carry my 2 year old ds to chase after some sheep.

The reason being ds wanted to cuddle one!! His little face crumpled when they obviously didn't catch one. We took loads of photos instead and he has talked about his wish to cuddle one for hours now. Looks like we will be visiting our nearby kids farm when we get back off holiday!
Are we as parents unreasonable in supporting our kids dreams even if they are somewhat strange?? Should I have told him it was a ridiculous idea or to let him think he had a chance??
The sheep by the way didn't look like they cared less about having to hurry off from a skinny dd carrying a well - clothed ds up a steep grassy hill - before I get rspca flamed!

I don't believe the OP genuinely didn't realise what a totally dickish thing that was to do. So pointless trying to educate someone who is thick or cruel.

BeastofCraggyIsland · 18/10/2016 21:28

Wtf? This has to be a wind up right? Nobody could be that much of a stupid twat in real life surely?

Harry Webb - the real life vet who wrote the Herriot books - died after being headbutted by a sheep

James Herriot was the pen name of James Alfred 'Alf' Wight. He wrote all the JH books and died of cancer aged 78. I think you must be thinking of a different vet! (I am a vet and he was one of my childhood heroes).

Ausernotanumber · 18/10/2016 21:29

Harry Webb is cliff Richard surely?

StrangeLookingParasite · 18/10/2016 21:29

You shouldn't let your children chase animals full stop. Even if it's just a pidgeon

I confess, while I would never under any circumstances chase livestock of any kind, nor allow my child to, chasing pigeons (or 'rats with wings') is a classic children's pastime here. The pigeons do not care. Really.

babybythesea · 18/10/2016 21:29

Jellybelli
Totally off topic, but isn't Harry Webb the real name of Cliff Richard? James Herriot was really Alf White, and he died of prostate cancer.

Sorry. As you were.

ClashCityRocker · 18/10/2016 21:30

Good to hear, presidentOlivia

May I suggest 'as this thread was going baaa-dly we thought it best to give it the chop'?

TallulahTheTiger · 18/10/2016 21:30

Got to be a joke! Just because they are lovely fluffy wuffy sheets and your child wishes to chase them does not mean you let them! Reminds me of time spotted a family clambering into neighbours field for a picnic and when I suggested they didn't was blithely advised- 'don't worry we have wellies'! Yep, sod the crops, as long as feet don't get muddy!

ThisisMrsNicolaHicklin · 18/10/2016 21:30

Apart from all the points about safety and animal cruelty that have been made above, sheep, in my experience are absolutely mankey animals, especially at this time of year. Why on earth would you let your wee one cuddle one?

MadHattersWineParty · 18/10/2016 21:32

Pigeons are not just 'rats with wings'.

And how do you know they don't mind being chased?!Hmm

DoYouRememberJustinBobby · 18/10/2016 21:33

Yay! How charming. What a wonderful way to teach your children to potentially cost a farmer thousands of pounds!

SecretNutellaFix · 18/10/2016 21:35

If it's dickish to chase pigeons in town, it's more dickish to encourage a child to chase animals that are bigger than they are because they wanted to cuddle it.

RestlessTraveller · 18/10/2016 21:35

Well at least your spoiled, special little snowflake achieved his dream.

Lorelei76 · 18/10/2016 21:35

Well you posted in Aibu

I have a dream

I want the sheep to be sitting round complaining about you while they relax over a spliff.

This is about as sensibke as your idea btw.

mineofuselessinformation · 18/10/2016 21:36

Just as well you didn't let them do it in the spring.
I'd have been more than happy for you to be charged for all the lambs the ewes might have aborted due to distress.

mineofuselessinformation · 18/10/2016 21:36

Oh, I forgot....
IDIOT

brasty · 18/10/2016 21:36

Sheep are very prone to sudden heart attacks when they are frightened. So doing anything to scare them is cruel.

DoYouRememberJustinBobby · 18/10/2016 21:37

I'm off to Staples to chase some desk chairs with the DC.

Iguessyourestuckwithme · 18/10/2016 21:38

How fucking idiotic! Not only could you have placed your child at risk god knows what could have happened if the sheep had kicked/maimed/hurt him but you put unescessary stress onto a sheep. If you won't let them scare pigeons don't let them bloody attack sheep!

Ilovehedgehogs · 18/10/2016 21:38

No one should be letting their dc chase anything, pigeons, ducks, sheep.

ItShouldHaveBeenJessMass · 18/10/2016 21:39

To the poster who suggested this is a reverse: does that mean there's a disgruntled sheep furiously typing away on Mumsnet?

Sorry. I'll get my (sheepskin) coat.

ArmySal · 18/10/2016 21:39

Shock Awful.

MidnightAura · 18/10/2016 21:41

I hope this is a wind up. What a vile thing to do.

Medicaltextbook · 18/10/2016 21:43

Assuming this is real YABVVVU
i didn't know the full details of the dangers for the sheep but wouldn't do as would assume it was cruel.
but can't understand how you thought this was safe for your adult DDor DC. These are not pets and may have diseases or ticks. They are also large animals that could injure someone that doesn't know how to handle them.
When did trespassing become OK? To chase sheep you would have stayed on any right of way.

Medicaltextbook · 18/10/2016 21:43

Should have been strayed off
