'supported living for challenging youngsters' being built next door.

NC for this as could be outing. This is more of a WWYD really. I am at risk of sounding like a right NIMBY and I hate that its bringing this out in me but...
I am a single parent about to move to a new house. Building work has started on a 'supported living for challenging youngsters' development right next door.
Now, I have lived in some of the most gang-riven areas in the country without a thought but in my old age and with a child I admit I am worried about crime, drugs and ability to sell house on. I love the house and everything else is good.
WWYD? Still proceed with the purchase?

This is a genuine post, I don't have many people to discuss this with and I have never worried about house values etc in my life! I am genuinely surprised at my reaction to this.

There has to be something MNHQ can do about this

Flutterflybutterby · 20/01/2022 04:51

I'd definitely not live there! It will be a nightmare and you'll never sell the place.

Joystir59 · 20/01/2022 04:57

I'd be worried about noise. I wouldn't buy the house

GiantHaystacks2021 · 20/01/2022 05:40

No, I wouldn't be happy about that.
You'll probably be living beside soem people who will have too much time on their hands and could be very anti-social.
Your child could be at risk.
As a single female, you will also be a target.

I would pull out.

I'm wondering if we live in the same city @getyourselfchecked

A developer had intended to build 2/3 bedroom flats with off road parking. There were a few objections over a couple of aspects of the plans but nothing that couldn't be overcome with a bit of fine tuning.
The area of the development has already experienced a mini crime wave over the last 3 years, pinpointed by the locals to the arrival of 2 "problem families" with adult children living at home in the summer of 2018. Break-ins have rocketed, bikes stolen despite being chained up, young women intimidated or assaulted, cats deliberately injured, an assault ending in a manslaughter charge.

Suddenly the site plans have re-surfaced having now gained approval as supported living bedsits for challenging individuals. This now has the potential to increase the crime rate even further in that area.

I say this because there's already one of these developments in another area of the city, on the main walking route to a secondary school and anecdotally the kids passing it run the gauntlet of being approached by drunk/high individuals, people half-dressed, people yelling and fighting, asking for money etc. Whatever "support" the residents of that housing get would appear to be pretty ineffectual.

don't do it. I lived IN one briefly at 16 while 8 months pregnant with my DD. I wasn't challenging myself but had challenging circumstances

Anyway, the lads in the place constantly sexually harassed me and a girl was raped in the garden. I got burgled, and then the lad living directly in the flat underneath mine set fire to himself and his stuff. This was all in the space of one month. Still traumatised.

LakieLady · 20/01/2022 08:20

I've supported young people moving on from schemes like that, so have been in a few.

I wouldn't want to live near one, I'm afraid.

Ovenaffray · 20/01/2022 08:22

This is a ZOMBIE THREAD from 2016

SmallestInTheClass · 20/01/2022 08:25

I think the house will be worth a lot less in a couple of years time, so I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. Even if you don't mind living next to supported accommodation, lots of potential buyers will.
