'supported living for challenging youngsters' being built next door.

NC for this as could be outing. This is more of a WWYD really. I am at risk of sounding like a right NIMBY and I hate that its bringing this out in me but...
I am a single parent about to move to a new house. Building work has started on a 'supported living for challenging youngsters' development right next door.
Now, I have lived in some of the most gang-riven areas in the country without a thought but in my old age and with a child I admit I am worried about crime, drugs and ability to sell house on. I love the house and everything else is good.
WWYD? Still proceed with the purchase?

This is a genuine post, I don't have many people to discuss this with and I have never worried about house values etc in my life! I am genuinely surprised at my reaction to this.

Would you buy the house of the place already existed next door?
If not then dont touch it. The same wnd reault combined with living next to a building site.

bosher · 19/10/2016 05:17

I used to work in a development similar to the one described by the OP. I loved that job, it was challenging and rewarding and I was fond of each and every resident. They faced a number of challenges and it was great that there was a development that was safe and provided a structured environment with staff that cared about their well being.

Would I buy the house next door? No I would not. But then I wouldn't buy a house next door to student halls of residence, a pub or a school either.

Tobebythesea · 19/10/2016 05:17

I would pull out.

elodie2000 · 19/10/2016 06:41

For the sole reason that this will bring down the value of your property I would not buy here.
Would you happily live there otherwise JustSpeak? I don't think I would.

Temporaryname137 · 19/10/2016 08:23

I think perhaps there is a practical difference between living next door to a young person with complex needs (whether SN related or not) - and a home that is full of many such people. Simply in terms of the amount of noise, comings and goings, all that sort of stuff.

Would I buy a house next to a family with children with SN? Jesus it wouldn't even occur to me to think about it! Would I want to buy a house next door to a housing complex for numerous people? No, far too much risk of noise and disruption.

I have absolutely no intention for apologising. I read the post, it's clear to me what is meant, and I called it such. If HQ have a problem with it they will delete it

Umbongo. Do please elucidate what you think those "serious issues" are thanks.

Navy. I'd like to understand what my "serious issues" are. And I'm agog to hear from Umbongo what they are.

Mozfan1 · 19/10/2016 10:42

Navy, Auser is genuinely upset. Not looking for a fight, not goading.

And the 'serious issues' comment was too bloody far.

Catsick36 · 19/10/2016 10:42

You will not have a peaceful life. Ever. Your child will not have a peaceful life. Each batch of troubled teens will be replaced by more as the years go by. The police will be a constant feature as will noise disruption and anti social behaviour. Do not buy that house. Run far far away.

So..? You've just accused Auser of looking for a fight when she's not. She's been trying to contact HQ last night AND this morning for a response to our issues. It's not about starting a fight at all. She's just speaking up for what she thinks.

notarehearsal · 19/10/2016 10:47

Having fostered for many, many years 'challenging youngsters' and knowing the ones that needed further supported accommodation in their young adult lives ( and onwards in some cases) I'd run and never look back!

And Umbongo is clearly goading and looking for a fight.

Mozfan1 · 19/10/2016 10:48

Well we weren't satisfied with the response.

lightsandresistance · 19/10/2016 10:50

Haven't read all the thread. I would back out if I could. I have experience of a similar set up nearby and it was a nightmare.

Well it didn't for us. Posts have been left to stand that shouldn't, and Rebecca's post was wholly innapropriate. In OUR humble opinion.
