Home delivery substitutes

KayTee87 · 17/10/2016 16:03

So not an Aibu but wanted to see other people's experiences. What's the strangest/funniest substitute you've had delivered with your home grocery delivery? Don't know if I'm allowed to name the shop...

I'll start;

Instead of breast pads I got nappy cream

Instead of pre- made infant first milk I got follow on milk (delivery driver didn't tell me there was a substitute so I'm glad I noticed before giving the baby it)

One of my friends received frozen raspberry cheesecake instead of frozen raspberries

A few months ago I got a 24 pack of toilet roll instead of 24 tins of cat food.
They're opposite each other on the same aisle at that particular store, so I think the picker just turned round and grabbed the nearest thing.

FeelingSmurfy · 18/10/2016 00:51

The picker doesn't always know the full name of the product they are substituting either, it could come up with curry p... And they assume it's pataks brand curry sauce rather than curry powder

My favourite I've seen online (with photo of order form) was tampons substituted with a pack of twix! Not sure if they went for similar shape or thought if she needed tampons she probably needed chocolate Wink

I hate getting meat instead of veggie items, but don't mind as much now I know that your order may not be picked by one person, so they dont know the rest of your stuff is veggie if you only order one frozen cheese pizza if you know what I mean

IthoughtATMwasacashpoint · 18/10/2016 00:59

I ordered pink grapefruit - received the equivalent number of tins of gin and pink grapefruit. Thank you Ocado

MissMoo22 · 18/10/2016 01:06

I actually love getting substitutes but sometimes they just don't make sense. I ordered a tub of egg & bacon sandwich mix once and they subbed it with a prawn cocktail one when they also do an egg mayo mix AND a less fat egg mayo mix which is surely closer to egg and bacon than prawn cocktail? Or the box of 80 teabags this week out of stock so they sent me a bag of 440 instead, which was a great bargain for me but did they really not have another brand with 80 in them? I drink one cup of tea a day and nobody else who lives here drinks tea!

I love seeing subs which cost a lot more than what you originally ordered. Last xmas I ordered a wee stocking filler gift for my sister, a shampoo and styling spray set I think which was £7 but they had none left so subbed it with a set that cost more than £30 (I think £35) so I was the best sister ever (even though I struggled between keeping it for myself and handing it over) when she opened her gifts.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 18/10/2016 01:25

I've had condoms in place of marernity pads. Delivery driver happened to be my neighbours son, he thought it was hilarious. We seem to get packets of sweets that we haven't actually ordered a lot. I tend to just assume DH has added them then they're not on the receipt when I check it.

couchparsnip · 18/10/2016 20:12

I ordered 24 cat food sachets and got 12 tins of dog food as substitute. I passed on those as I thought the cat probably wouldn't be keen.

Another time I ordered marshmallows for making smores. Got a packet of fudge which would have been a bit too melty.

Warl · 18/10/2016 20:15

I've had loads of bog standard ones. A good one was a cheese selection platter which was substituted with a chicken dairylea lunchable. My all time favourite was when they sent me a pack of mini milk ice lollies in place of a bag of crushed ice????

babypeach · 18/10/2016 20:26

Minced beef instead of mincemeat for mince pie...

JustDanceAddict · 18/10/2016 21:09

I have said 'no subs' for ages, but I keep on getting free garlic when they say 'not available', but it's there in the box? V weird.,

hefzi · 18/10/2016 21:20

Mymouth Grin I got pregnancy tests in place of Tampax one week. Now I shop at Asda, though, and get distressingly sensible substitutions, and never anything exciting like champagne instead of Prosecco sigh

woodsies1975 · 19/10/2016 00:20

I ordered several oranges last year ahead of making my Christmas cake and mincemeat, but had them substituted for several orange peppers.

StartledByHisFurryShorts · 19/10/2016 02:28

I love these! My favourite was when a friend ordered cinnamon sticks to make a Christmas table decoration. Substituted with ground cumin. Yeah, not really going to work.

Had a few vegetarian things substituted with non-veggie stuff. "Bacos" bacon bits are a bit of a guilty pleasure. They're totally vegetarian. They have been variously been replaced with prosciutto and pork scratchings.

StartledByHisFurryShorts · 19/10/2016 02:31

And slightly off-topic but the people who have had cat food substituted with dog food, it's not occurred to me before, but what is the difference? In a emergency, I would feed my cats dog food, I reckon.

e1y1 · 19/10/2016 02:36

Sainsbury's charge you for higher priced substitutions :( Of course you don't need to accept it, but would be nice to get something of a bargain.

e1y1 · 19/10/2016 02:36

arrgh love seeing subs which cost a lot more than what you originally ordered

Quite a bit; Cat food is higher in protein and vitamin A, also cats require Taurine (dogs can make their own). Cats are considered true carnivores, Dogs are considered omnivores and can exist on a meat and plant based diet. In an emergency it's not a problem, but long term, it wouldn't provide optimum health for the animal to eat the wrong type.

e1y1 · 19/10/2016 02:43

Sorry... Forgot mention, as Cats need Taurine, it is in cat food, it isn't in dog food.

ZoeTurtle · 19/10/2016 08:55

Once I was refunded for a sliced loaf because there was "no suitable substitute." No bread, really? Hmm

maggienolia · 19/10/2016 09:37

I ordered toilet rolls once and was refunded because there was no suitable substitute.
What, not one roll in the whole store?
I have also had dairy free ice cream replaced with the double cream variety and size 5 nappies replaced with newborn.
The best one was when I ordered a 70cl bottle of expensive scotch and got a 1.5 litre bottle instead. Funnily enough DH didn't want to return that one. Grin

FeelingSmurfy · 19/10/2016 13:58

Today we had
30 mini vegetarian sausage rolls swapped for 12 large vegetarian sausage rolls (latter worth £4 but got them for the original £1.50)
White wraps swapped for white wraps
Ready to eat mango swapped for bigger pack of ready to eat mango (paid for smaller pack)

Very impressed today!

Lazyafternoon · 19/10/2016 14:07

Not had any particularly amusing sub recently, but despite requesting substitutions my store seem to send nothing instead! Particularly wine. it's happened a few times now. Fair enough my requested bottle of sauvignon blanc might not be available, but NONE?! You can't seriously tell me the shop had run out of all wine?! If they can substitute cat for toilet roll I don't see why they can't just give me any old bottle of plonk - red, white, green... if it's been one of those Fridays I'm going to drinking whatever it is!

6o6o842 · 19/10/2016 14:43

Yesterday I ordered 200gm of green beans and got 2kg. We like beans, but not that much! In the past (on separate occasion as) I've ordered milk, ham and eggs and received nothing because there was no suitable substitute. Really...no milk, ham or eggs in the whole shop?!?!

MrGrumpy01 · 19/10/2016 16:32

Sainsburys now refund the difference, well kind of. You get the refund in way of a voucher that goes into your online voucher 'wallet'. It is valid for a fairly long time.

I haven't had any that spring to mind. Apart from sending diet coke instead of full fat. That went straight back.

LadyBaelish · 19/10/2016 16:36

We've never had ridiculous substitutions but I always remember the poster from a previous thread who had ordered woodland eggs and received a small wooden owl as a sub Grin

StartledByHisFurryShorts · 19/10/2016 19:36

Wasn't there a poster on another thread who had tampons substituted with party poppers? Or the other way round. Not sure which is weirder.

The poster concluded that this was based on some sort of "has a small string attached at the end" algorithm.
