Home delivery substitutes

So not an Aibu but wanted to see other people's experiences. What's the strangest/funniest substitute you've had delivered with your home grocery delivery? Don't know if I'm allowed to name the shop...

I'll start;

Instead of breast pads I got nappy cream

Instead of pre- made infant first milk I got follow on milk (delivery driver didn't tell me there was a substitute so I'm glad I noticed before giving the baby it)

One of my friends received frozen raspberry cheesecake instead of frozen raspberries

A 12 pack ice lollies with 3 tubs of posh Swedish Glace. I didn't complain.

Boogers · 17/10/2016 19:42

There was a woman on here a couple of years ago who ordered a big bag of multipack Haribo sweets for Halloween and Asda substituted her a mulitpack of flavoured condoms instead.

lalalalyra · 17/10/2016 19:44

Dog food instead of cat food. Same brand, but I refuse to believe they had NO cat food in the store. The driver was mortified.

FarAwayHills · 17/10/2016 19:50

I ordered toothpaste and got haddockHmm

Redglitter · 17/10/2016 19:53

Instead of tiger rolls I got a huge box of Maltesers. Not so bad since I got them for 60p and I love them but not ideal for lunch

Thatwaslulu · 17/10/2016 19:58

I ordered a cheeseboard pack and crackers. I got a vanilla cheesecake and breadsticks.

ThisUsernameIsAvailable · 17/10/2016 20:11

Asda substituted the juice I ordered for the juice I ordered. Me and the delivery guy couldn't work that out Confused

Callipygian · 17/10/2016 20:26

I actually work for a (top 3) supermarket doing data analysis and the way the substitutes are chosen has massively improved over the last few years.

It used to be mainly based on the name of the product. "Uncle Bens Spicy Rice" would probably get substituted with "Uncle Bens Spicy Masala" because there are lots of the same words. Similar for a branded stock, the brand might come out as the most important thing so you would end up getting fish stock instead of beef.

However nowadays its far more sophisticated, and basically all of the autonomy of the "pickers" has gone. Its based on a smart, data lead, substitution system that will identify the "need state" of the customer.

I love reading these threads

We've only started online shopping and I always select no substitutions

Still remember the mnetter who ordered tampons and got party poppers instead

EggbertHeartsTina · 17/10/2016 20:34

Bayonet lightbulbs instead of screw-in ones Confused

RebootYourEngine · 17/10/2016 20:38

ThisUsername the reason that may have happened is because the computer might not have recognised the product that you wanted so it had to be put through as a sub.

RebootYourEngine · 17/10/2016 20:41

Calli at the supermarket who you work for do they provide sub suggestions? The supermarket where my sister works doesnt. It is down to the pickers to choose.

CancellyMcChequeface · 17/10/2016 20:46

Hair spray instead of shampoo. Confused I'd guessed that if they needed to substitute, it would have been with shampoo from a different brand. But no - same brand, completely different product.

gunting · 17/10/2016 20:46

I shop at Tesco and only get normal subs Sad

KC225 · 17/10/2016 20:53

Hahaha for the haribo and codoms

ICancelledTheCheque · 17/10/2016 21:15

Fish sticks made out of some kind of reformed plastic crap.

I wanted a pack of fresh seafood (cod, salmon, prawns, mussels) to make a fish pie Hmm

And Tesco failing to send me the main course part of the meal deal and knocking 20p off the price of my shopping despite not delivering my £6 main course Hmm thankfully their customer services are great and refunded the whole £10...

Impala1980 · 17/10/2016 21:17

I once ordered a dozen quail eggs and received a dozen duck eggs...

chattygranny · 17/10/2016 21:32

Lemon scented cleaner instead of lemons.

chattygranny · 17/10/2016 21:33

That was Tesco

Suze1621 · 17/10/2016 21:37

Size of nappies ordered from Asda were out of stock - replaced with same brand but in a smaller size, really useful (not)!!

Mymouthgetsmeintrouble · 17/10/2016 21:38

I ordered pregnancy tests and got condoms

DesolateWaist · 17/10/2016 21:42

I shop with Ocado.
In 6 years I've never had a silly substitute.

steamboatwilly123 · 17/10/2016 22:57

Sainsburys once subbed baby lavender bedtime bath with Nivea anti-wrinkle cream Hmm

selfishcrab · 17/10/2016 23:27

Dog food instead of cat food.
Condoms instead of sanitary towels.
The picker does indeed pick the subs but first there is a little list (1 or 2 items that may be simular), my DS GF used to do this when she was studying.

BMW6 · 18/10/2016 00:22

I'm new to online shopping (one month) but so far

  • ordered one large jar Hellmans mayo and received double the amount but in smaller bottles (ordered a 400g jar and received 800g for same price)
  • aerosol Dry Shampoo (not a sub for anything)
  • Asda own vrand vodka subbed for Absolute (at price for Asda;s)

Am having another delivery tomorrow - so far so brilliant!!
