To feel slightly irritated every time I hear 'Marmite - you either lover it or hate it'?

I quite like Marmite, but we don't bother buying it. If I'm offered it, I might say yes depending on what the other options are. I can't be the only one. It's great branding, I suppose.

Yep I agree it's a marketing thing really (how many brands have managed to get their product name into a common saying?) I quite like Marmite but have just looked at the jar in the cupboard and the BBE date is Dec15 so I clearly don't love it THAT much..... (I assume it's still OK to eat, salt is a pretty good preservative yes?)

It is/was good marketing. Marmite: you either love it or hate it, or just leave it sweating in the cupboard for years.

It's actually quite useful to use it in speech like Birdy says, a sort of shorthand. But I'm kind of irritated at it not being accurate. And all the free advertising it gets.

I'm on the fence for it too. Brilliant marketing though. My 8 year old said it recently "oh mr X is school is soooo marmite!" - she doesn't know what marmite is. I asked. She thought it was just a phrase.

YABU I can't fecking stand Marmite.

I'm another one on the fence. It's OK, but we never buy it. I might have it in a hotel if I see it but that's only probably because there are so many threads on here where people can't live without it and always take it on holiday abroad. I don't think I know anyone in real life that does that.

Marmite, you either hate it or eat it on toast occasionally because you fancy something savoury but can't be bothered to cook and have run out of cheese- not really very catch is it?

Surely there are other things that people either really love or really hate?

How did Marmite get to be the word for that?

I bet marketing bods dream about having their product name used like this, as adjective that everyone understands. I'm a bit indifferent to Marmite.

Yeah this has always really annoyed me. I'm indifferent to Marmite. I fancy it occasionally, and I've no idea how one jar doesn't last everyone else years and years with them being so big.

I like it, but I prefer Vegemite or Sainsbury's own reduced salt yeast extract.

Specsavers have done well with their 'Should have gone to Specsavers' line. And Ronseal's 'does what it says on the tin' seems to have planted itself in our day to day speech. None can rival Marmite yet though.

I suspect the really clever thing about the marketing was that it got around the fact that some people really hate it - not because it's disgusting, just because that's how it works. However, YANBU. I've met a few people who hate it, but most people don't really care one way or the other. I don't know many people who LOVE it.

I'm more of a Bovril lover myself. Toast with tons of butter and a smear of Bovril sets me up nicely for the day.

I think it's OK too. Can eat it on toast with butter, meh. It's useful in cooking if you run out of brown stock though.

I've never tried Marmite.

I love Bovril - should I give it a go? Are they similar in any way?
