Lily Allen in Calais

Couldn't find another thread on this. The situation in Calais is awful, but AIBU to see Lily Allen's overtures as slightly virtue signalling and self-indulgent?

It was bizarre to phrase it as though the UK had invaded and was an aggressor.

^^ it sounds to me like no borders type activities have brain washed her. And yes it makes her sound very ignorant. But more worrying is that sense of entitlement she is giving to those who listen to her in the camp - we bomb you we kill you we owe you,

it sounds like ISIS recruitment chat. " come to the caliph they are bombing our women and children " She needs to take a look at pictures in Kabul before and after the taliban !

Puzzledandpissedoff · 12/10/2016 21:23

most have family already settled here

I wonder if you have any evidence for that please?

to become a foster carer you hVe to hVe a year long assment , dbs check, financial check 3-5 refrances employer refnaces your birth children will have to be spoken to , your child's school will contacted along with any ex partners you also hVe to have a medical
You have to have a spear room and at leat one person will be expected to give up work full time

You cannot choose the children you can only choose the age range so example 0-5 Ect and some la don't even let you do that its just 0-18

ChariotOfFire · 12/10/2016 21:23

For those who asked about fostering refugees, there's a charity called Refugees at Home to put hosts in touch with people who need to be hosted - sorry, can't link as I'm on my phone. It's people who are already in the UK and of various ages - sometimes a mother and child need to be hosted together. It's a good organisation. :)

I've also contacted my local MP urging him to get behind Stella Creasy's cross party group for the refugee children who have the legal right to be here in the UK. It's worth an email to your MP.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 12/10/2016 21:24

Do we actually know how many refugees have applied to stay in other European countries? I suspect not. The refugees at Calais are at the end of a long journey but of course inevitably some will want to come to the UK -perhaps because they have learnt English at school/University and want to live in a country where they have a chance of getting a job.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 12/10/2016 21:26

But ask yourself - why was Lily Allen at Calais with a camera crew?

Even if they have family

The family would still have to become kinship foster carers and go and meet the same standards as any other foster carer I wonder if they themslefs have manged to sneek over in the back of a Iceland truck how they would pass a ss assment

Lightsoffplease · 12/10/2016 21:28

Yes, Britain IS an aggressor. Are we forgetting Palestine? The Dual Promise?

Lightsoffplease · 12/10/2016 21:29

What happens to Palestine directly affects the rest of the Arab and or Islamic world.

That is private fostering usually of older teens 16+ you cannot legally foster a child in the uk with out an assment from ss end of story

And please be aware takeing on one of these men you could be putting your own children at risk if they turn out not to be children put it of your minds you will receiving a cute 2 year old

DillyDayDream8 · 12/10/2016 21:30

I foster a refugee long term and I am not a Muslim.
I know of 15 other foster carers who look after refugees, none of them are Muslim.

FluffyPineapple · 12/10/2016 21:31

Its a terrible tragedy! How many refugees have you taken in Lightsoff?

Manumission · 12/10/2016 21:33

Yes, Britain IS an aggressor. Are we forgetting Palestine? The Dual Promise?

Are you insane?

The mandate was 60+ years ago in a different country entirely.

Nothing to do with recent attempts to relieve Syria.

I didn't say you couldn't but you will have to admit ss will be looking for the best possible match

justgivemeamo · 12/10/2016 21:36

well as I pointed out earlier we already have a massive crisis in the UK with a never seen before amount of DC in care needing adoption, including over 4 thousand asylum seekers.

We clearly don't do nothing, un accompanied dc arrive in the UK every single day and thats not only from migrants sneaking in, but also from the EU.

Thefishewife · 12/10/2016 21:37

We fostered a girl who was 8 and we did eventually ask to have her long term she was Muslim and this was key to us being denied as BP were keen for her to be place with practising Muslim family

justgivemeamo · 12/10/2016 21:37

I find it so odd on threads like this that Push factors are never mentioned.

Never Assad, Putin, ISIS etc...the turmoil generally in the ME just old Blighty - the cause of all the worlds ills Confused

Manumission · 12/10/2016 21:39

Exactly just - she might as well apologise to France for our part in WW2 while she's there.

justgivemeamo · 12/10/2016 21:39

70,440 children are in care today - needing homes Sad

PausingFlatly · 12/10/2016 21:40

bibbity, here are the figures for Syrian refugees from UNHCR.

Registered Syrian Refugees
4,795,648

This figure includes 2.1 million Syrians registered by UNHCR in Egypt, Iraq, Jordan and Lebanon, 2.7 million Syrians registered by the Government of Turkey, as well as more than 29,000 Syrian refugees registered in North Africa.

The number of Syrians arriving in Europe seeking international protection continues to increase. However, it remains low compared to Syria`s neighboring countries, with slightly more than 10% of those who have fled the conflict seeking safety in Europe.

Total Syrian Asylum Applications in Europe
1,151,865 between Apr 2011 and Aug 2016
137,798 in 2014 only

64% Germany & Serbia (and Kosovo: S/RES/1244(1999))
29% Sweden, Hungary, Austria, Netherlands, Denmark
11% All others

(There are a lot more statistics on the UNHCR site, if you want further details.)

FluffyPineapple · 12/10/2016 21:41

DillyDayDream That would be a private foster arrangement. Kudos to you! Which LA are you fostering with? Any British LA fostering department will have many British children desperately seeking homes that they need to place before they house "children" from abroad. Foster carers are desperately needed for British children who have found themselves in impossible situations.

It would be regrettable if they were forgotten under the guise of "I want to foster, but I only want to foster a child from abroad whose parents have abandoned them until they get permission to remain in UK and then the rest of the family can come to UK as his/her family".

I hate Social Services and have had many a run in with them but they are in an impossible situation at the moment. Its little wonder we are hearing of so many British born children suffering at the hands of their parents lately, with no SS intervention. Our Social Services cannot cope with the demand. That is unforgiveable!

Thefishewife · 12/10/2016 21:41

As and someone who fosters I am actually surprised you don't think there is a shortage of foster placements

Personally in my old LA I know the family finder used literally spend her day begging fosters carers to take in children usually older than there approved aged or a bigger sibling group than they had agreed

I had many a call at 2am starting of

I am sorry it's so late but ........

We lived down the road from Heathrow so had a lot of minors come though

LunaLoveg00d · 12/10/2016 21:42

Completely over the top and cringe-worthy.

Does she have a new record coming out soon?

DillyDayDream8 · 12/10/2016 21:44

ss will be looking for the best possible match
Sadly not in our la!
There are very few foster carers who are Muslim so they really have no choice.

justgivemeamo · 12/10/2016 21:45

70,440 children in care today needing homes "the highest on record"

" The increase was largely among older children which included un asylum seekers which rose to 4,210 up 54 % in one year."
