Lily Allen in Calais

Couldn't find another thread on this. The situation in Calais is awful, but AIBU to see Lily Allen's overtures as slightly virtue signalling and self-indulgent?

Are the refugees going to be placed in ordinary secondary schools? What happens if they are really adults and have lied about their age? What happens to vulnerable young girls who will be with them in school. Will their safety be guaranteed?

FruitCider · 27/10/2016 11:46

Weresquirrel seriously? You are asking that question when children were forced to sleep under a bridge in Calais last night because there were no safeguards to protect them last night? Show a bit of sensitivity for goodness sake!

weresquirrel · 27/10/2016 11:53

FruitCider, yes I am asking seriously. Why aren't they claiming asylum in France or any of the countries they have gone through to get to Calais? ISIS and the Taliban are not in charge in France are they?

Bluebolt · 27/10/2016 12:00

You can ask multiple questions, if the logic is we can only question the most vulnerable then I would say that the children in Calais have it easy compared to those in Aleppo or still in the clutches of ISIS. You can ask about safeguarding children in schools and still have other concerns.

I find that the reaction of the public, especially on social media, is much more interesting that what Lily Allen actually said. Same with the reaction to Gary Lineker's comments. It's very telling, says a lot about what many people are really like in this country.

No wonder so many people feel unwelcomed here, and are booed if they dare express it.

FruitCider · 27/10/2016 12:14

WereSquirrel why should unaccompanied children, as young as 8, have to claim asylum in other countries when they have extended family in the U.K.?

Manumission · 27/10/2016 12:16

She's working it up into a big conspiracy theory now.

She's a liability to the POV she purports to support ( and I still think she's unwell TBH).

derxa · 27/10/2016 16:43

She's a complete arse.

Manumission · 27/10/2016 18:50

And that Grin

I don't like her much as a sleb but I agree with her on this.
