To expect to be paid more than half? (Pic included)

Background: I'm a home baker using decent/top quality ingredients in my cakes, friends and family buy off me for special events and am trying to kick start a little baking business from home ( after receiving loads of compliments and encouragement which I'm thankful for!) A friend has requested a cake (pictured) and offered well below the asking price knowing what quality I use and usually the one to berate others if they take the mick when it comes to price. I don't over charge and usually find I've undrecharged when adding up costs ( new to this). How much would you expect to pay for this cake? I'm just feeling a little upset really, I love her and will still make it just surprised at asking to pay less than half. I understand mates rates and all...
Before you ask
Yes she can afford it
I don't buy wholesale ingredients
No I didn't stick to my price (out of shock)

PoohBearsHole · 10/10/2016 19:22

I made a friends wedding cake, I didn't get her a present as it's me about £150 (hiring a stand, ingredients etc) I didn't mind as closest closest friend but please don't say she offered y £20 and you said yes 😱😱

BantyCustards · 10/10/2016 19:22

Shamelessly place marking for the big reveal

Lilacpink40 · 10/10/2016 19:22

Plain cake £80. Fruit 1 layer £110. Fruit 2 layers £150.

Suspense is killing me...

MagikarpetRide · 10/10/2016 19:22

I have never needed to know the 'price' of a cake so much more than right now goes off to search for life

ChequeOff · 10/10/2016 19:23

Thought of your new nn yet OP? Grin

geeup · 10/10/2016 19:24

I just read the whole thread and there's no answer. This is a nightmare.

BoopTheSnoot · 10/10/2016 19:25

This is making me itch. I must know the offer that was given! I must know so that I can sit here and be outraged.

GiddyOnZackHunt · 10/10/2016 19:26

Christ I'm tempted to nc and pretend to be the op under a failed nc just to get some closure GrinCake

SugarMiceInTheRain · 10/10/2016 19:26

£150. Unless the cake she actually wants is miniature and would fit in the palm of her hand. So go on, what cheeky sum did she think she should pay you?

LowDudgeon · 10/10/2016 19:28

maybe OP is putting kids to bed?

ilovecherries · 10/10/2016 19:28

It would vary a bit with the size of the cake, but if it was a sponge, I'd expect to pay about £150 for a two tier cake - and about double that for a rich fruit cake. But you do need to have a formula for pricing, or you're never going to make a profit. I just paid £180 for a large two layer chocolate sponge for a 21st. It had some sugar work, but nothing hugely complex. And didn't feel I'd been overcharged.

NerrSnerr · 10/10/2016 19:28

I have never bought a proper cake so doing something like your friend if someone told me to name a price. I would be happily corrected though.

Katedotness1963 · 10/10/2016 19:29

From the picture it looks pretty small. I'd guess £100 and you were offered £40.

eddielizzard · 10/10/2016 19:29

tell her the least you can do it for is x, and then charge her more than mates rates. sorry, but she's not such a good friend if she's not prepared to pay you properly.

£150+++??? You lot fucking crack me up! It's a cake, not a fucking monthly shop!

I'm assuming you never tried to make a cake of that size. The icing alone is probably about £25 and that's a conservative estimate. Ingredients cost and a cake that size takes a LOT of them. It also takes a LONG time to bake the cakes and even longer to decorate. A cake that size is easily a days work. Super smooth icing is not at all easy to do.

Baking is soul destroying on this scale because something so simple like this looks like you should be able to do it in a couple of hours but the reality is you couldn't even bake the cakes in that time.

Op has obviously gone to put the kids to bed....I too am itching

People are so unrealistic about stuff like this, the ingredients alone will be a fortune plus the sundries like cake board, dowling etc but then there are the hours and hours that the op will spend sourcing all these bits and actually making it, even at £200 she really won't be raking it in

FurryLittleTwerp · 10/10/2016 19:30

Covering costs would be at least £50.

CalmItKermitt · 10/10/2016 19:30

Ffs how much then??

Timetogetup0630 · 10/10/2016 19:31

Joining in too cos I wanna know......

Twinkletowedelephant · 10/10/2016 19:32

How much?????

Phalenopsisgirl · 10/10/2016 19:32

It's clearly well over a foot tall, I wouldn't call that a small cake.
