To expect to be paid more than half? (Pic included)

Background: I'm a home baker using decent/top quality ingredients in my cakes, friends and family buy off me for special events and am trying to kick start a little baking business from home ( after receiving loads of compliments and encouragement which I'm thankful for!) A friend has requested a cake (pictured) and offered well below the asking price knowing what quality I use and usually the one to berate others if they take the mick when it comes to price. I don't over charge and usually find I've undrecharged when adding up costs ( new to this). How much would you expect to pay for this cake? I'm just feeling a little upset really, I love her and will still make it just surprised at asking to pay less than half. I understand mates rates and all...
Before you ask
Yes she can afford it
I don't buy wholesale ingredients
No I didn't stick to my price (out of shock)

I NEED TO KNOW WHAT TIGHTARSE OFFERED!!!!!

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 10/10/2016 19:07

Cringes this is going to be awful, with 'friend' offering something derisory like £30.

Zeeandra · 10/10/2016 19:07

Add up your costs properly OP including your time and it's not to late to say to her "sorry I've calculated the costs properly and it will be £x. I really can't do it for less than that. Do you still want to proceed?" Don't let yourself be taken advantage of.

Maudlinmaud · 10/10/2016 19:09

Three words.

RealityCheque · 10/10/2016 19:10

£150+++??? You lot fucking crack me up! It's a cake, not a fucking monthly shop!

In all seriousness it is impossible to tell the size from that photo.

PinkyOfPie · 10/10/2016 19:10

OP come back! It's making me itch not knowing!

sprinklesofweirdness · 10/10/2016 19:12

right really want to know now

gonzo155 · 10/10/2016 19:12

I must be out of touch. I was thinking £50-60 as it looks small.

MrsArthurShappey · 10/10/2016 19:13

👋👋👋👋 helloooooooooo. OP isn't coming back is she?

I married 2 years ago and my best friend made my cake as a gift. I gave her money to cover the ingredients, marzipan, fondant and sugar paste for flowers.
I gave her £80 as she said that was what it had cost. Some weeks later when a bit drunk her DH confessed that she had completely undercharged me for the ingredients (bottom layer fruit, top layer flavoured sponge). It was a big cake, but still, 2 tiers and iced and decorated. OP if your friend has offered less than the ingredient costs you must tell her, even if you are prepared to work for free.

JakeBallardswife · 10/10/2016 19:13

£50?

ny20005 · 10/10/2016 19:14

Reality, the cost is the cost. Factors in ingredients & materials used along with the vast number of hours taken to create this. Would you go to a garage with your car & refuse to pay labour costs as it's only a car & can't be that difficult Hmm

IJustAteTheKidsFoodAgain · 10/10/2016 19:15

Oh ffs, I keep coming back to find out how much and I'm not getting anything done!

ShowMeTheElf · 10/10/2016 19:15

sorry, forgot to say even if it was a friend making this and therefore no overhead charge, I would offer over £100. As you are setting up a business I'd offer £150 for sponge and £200 if fruit unless you came up with a significantly higher figure first.

AnyFucker · 10/10/2016 19:17

how much did she fucking offer you

LagunaBubbles · 10/10/2016 19:17

I hate to rain in your parade OP but unless you are registered with HMRC and Environmental health you aren't allowed to charge for anything apart from the ingredients, if you are in the UK.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 10/10/2016 19:17

ny20005 I know Electricians and Mechanics who have people/'friends' take the piss wanting work done at mates rates/free. I always pay full price unless friend/family offers a lower price and even then I'm most grateful and more likely return the offer.

LagunaBubbles · 10/10/2016 19:19

If you are all registered and insured then you should be charging at least £150 for that cake.

BringMeTea · 10/10/2016 19:19

People's increasing irritation is making me chuckle. Play the game OP!!

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 10/10/2016 19:19

Was it cash in hand Op?

redcaryellowcar · 10/10/2016 19:19

I wonder if you call her bluff and make a cake which looks like this but with bottom tier around 3" and top 2"? Would highlight just how ridiculous it is?

MimsyPimsy · 10/10/2016 19:21
