To expect to be paid more than half? (Pic included)

Background: I'm a home baker using decent/top quality ingredients in my cakes, friends and family buy off me for special events and am trying to kick start a little baking business from home ( after receiving loads of compliments and encouragement which I'm thankful for!) A friend has requested a cake (pictured) and offered well below the asking price knowing what quality I use and usually the one to berate others if they take the mick when it comes to price. I don't over charge and usually find I've undrecharged when adding up costs ( new to this). How much would you expect to pay for this cake? I'm just feeling a little upset really, I love her and will still make it just surprised at asking to pay less than half. I understand mates rates and all...
Before you ask
Yes she can afford it
I don't buy wholesale ingredients
No I didn't stick to my price (out of shock)

After everything I feel absolutely sick to my stomach! The cake got damaged big time on the road trip home and had to be patched up with ready made buttercream and extra gold sugar Sad all my hard work ruined within 20min of the damn thing leaving my front door. Genuinely felt devastated! They managed to do a salvage job but looks nothing like I sent out. I probably jinxed the thingSad

Thanks everyone, I'll look into those vegan recipes Cake

Oh no! I actually just said that out loud and DD was really worried that something had happened to her grandparents or her siblings :(

I am gutted for you, so you must feel awful. Who was transporting it?

IhatchedaSnorlax · 15/10/2016 22:16

Who was transporting the cake?

WalrusGumboot · 15/10/2016 22:31

What was the occasion OP?

MrsA2015 · 15/10/2016 23:51

walrusit was a family reunion, the sister took a taxi home and she had cake on lap to try and keep level, his driving was erratic plus road were winding uphill. Sad took me all day and night to get over it

Well then at least you can take heart from the fact that it wasnt your fault.

More to the point, did she pay you when she picked it up?!

MagikarpetRide · 16/10/2016 06:36

Oh no, after all that!

LagunaBubbles · 16/10/2016 09:47

Oh that's a shame! The best place is the footwell or boot (in a box obviously) as this us completely level, lap not so much.

Imnotaslimjim · 16/10/2016 10:10

Oh MrsA you must be devastated. I'm glad you got a photo before it left so you have a record of it at its best.

Sadly, the worst place you can carry a cake is on you lap as it's so uneven. The boot is the best place, with something braced against the box to stop it sliding about. I also use the non-slip mats you can get and lay it under the box.

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/10/2016 10:24

Bless you. Tho least not your fault but grrrrrr hope you charged extra to repair

confuugled1 · 16/10/2016 12:25

Oh no!

But at least it happened when they had the cake and they were responsible for it - maybe next time they'll realise that it's worth paying for a box for it to be put in and careful delivery...

RockinHippy · 16/10/2016 12:45

Aww, no Sad

I'd be devastated too, its a cake makers worst nightmare. I never feel as if I have finished until its safely in situ at the event, even though its done & no longer my responsibility. Glad you got photos first though

Though part of me thinks, Karma is a bitch & the cheeky mares had it coming Grin

MrsA2015 · 16/10/2016 15:26

I didn't do the repair, I sent her to sainsburys with a list of things to buy and some instructions on how to fix it. I ended up providing a box in the end it was just one of those crap days where it all went wrong!

I bet the repair looked terrible, which might act as gentle reminder that making and decorating a cake isn't as easy as it looks.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 18/10/2016 18:25

It's karma.
They ended up with the standard of cake they were willing to pay for...

clam · 18/10/2016 19:25

My friend is a professional cake-maker/decorator. She absolutely will not allow her cakes to be transported on a lap or the seat of a car (as they're not flat and the cake will bow). They must be flat in the boot and secured so they can't slide.
(I know this wasn't your decision).

tk

This Free Cakes thing sounds great!

I'm getting in touch with my local group, I think. (God help them . . . Grin )
