Clowns - to wish the media would stop reporting them

MsJamieFraser · 07/10/2016 20:22

If anyone hasn't heard, the new popular thing to do, is dress up as a clown with a weapon and go about terrifying people by intimidation and brandishing a weapon.

AIBU to think the media should stop reporting on this and these idiots will just go onto the next trend.

Currently my quiet home town is full of police and sirens blaring as a few idiots are out terrorising the public.

It's not a northern thing, there are reports all across the U.K.

And overseas.

I'm in NI and it's here too. I agree. Stop reporting it. Stop giving them the attention they want.

MsJamieFraser · 07/10/2016 20:46

I'm currently in the NE, a friend who is on business in Manchester has also said the local are reporting it

Family live in Scotland are reporting it, and friends in the east coast are reporting it also x

lionheart · 07/10/2016 20:54

FFS. How can this be a thing?

Spin789 · 07/10/2016 20:56

I also don't really understand how it's a "thing", are idiots allover the country just copying a craze? Had students worrying and upset about it all day.

lazydog · 07/10/2016 20:56

It's big here in Canada too. All schools in our school district were on lockdown yesterday after idiotic teens posted a cartoon-pic on instagram with scary clowns, brandinshing guns, stating that "All schools in are about to get hit"... A 16 and a 17 year old were arrested. Total hoax, but I hope they throw the book at them.

lazydog · 07/10/2016 20:57

*brandishing

lazydog · 07/10/2016 20:58

One theory is that the craze started in the US as an ill thought out publicity stunt to promote the remake of IT...

AppleJac · 07/10/2016 20:58

I think they have a ulterior motive

Lorelei76 · 07/10/2016 20:58

oh wow
my US friends were telling me there's been loads of sightings there - I think that was Tuesday night - has it spread here or been going on all the time?

I don't know the details but I have a friend in the Seattle area who said they are seriously looking at some, er, clowns, at suspects in a murder case. Quite how you walk away from a murder scene unnoticed while dressed as a clown....!

FlyingElbows · 07/10/2016 20:59

We've had it here in SW Scotland. Police were in the children's school today after carry on last night. Idiots.

ALemonyPea · 07/10/2016 21:02

It's ridiculous isn't it. It's local to me.

There have been three children excluded from DS1s school, two for bringing in a knife to protect themselves from the clowns, and one for bringing in a nerf gun. DS1 has said the rumours are going round saying they're targeting schools in the next few days.

WeAllHaveWings · 07/10/2016 21:02

We are west coast of Scotland and there have been incidents here too.

Wearing a mask and running after children with a weapon, terrifying them isn't funny at all, and as usual the stories the kids share are even worse then the reality. Sooner this stupid craze passes the better.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 07/10/2016 21:02

I'm in NE England too . Looks to be pretty serious in Liverpool too.
A Northern thing Confused .

LadyConstanceDeCoverlet · 07/10/2016 21:04

I hadn't heard about this, but I agree that this is one area where a bit of self-censorship by the media would do no harm. If they make a big thing about it, there will simply be more idiots jumping on the bandwagon.

DramaInPyjamas · 07/10/2016 21:07

I'm in Scotland too.
There have been no kids out playing today after school which is unusual in my area. might just be a coincidence but I'm guessing they are too scared to go out, or being kept in 'just in case'

JaniceBattersby · 07/10/2016 21:08

People are dressing as killer clowns and it's the media's fault? Ok.

You can't start censoring the press or else where do you stop? Don't report any crime because there may be copycats?

JaniceBattersby · 07/10/2016 21:09

And they're not 'making a big thing of it,' LadyConstance, it IS a big thing, clearly, if it's happening all over the country.

eightbluebirds · 07/10/2016 21:10

Happened at a local secondary school up here in the NE today. The clown thing I couldn't care less about, the fact they're walking around with knives and referring to it as a "prank" is disgusting.

SouthernComforts · 07/10/2016 21:12

A local school issued a statement urging people to call the police if they see a clown Hmm. Utter madness. As far as I know, no actual clowns have been seen.

(NW Town)

unimagmative13 · 07/10/2016 21:13

If you live in a small town where people like to have something to talk about ALL THE TIME then this is a real thing.

It may pass you by if you don't read the mirror or look at local Chinese whisper FB groups.

gratesnakes · 07/10/2016 21:14

You've got to feel sorry for the real clowns innocently making their way to do their lame entertainment at some kids birthday party. They're going to be wrestled to the ground by the neighbours.

SlinkyVagabond · 07/10/2016 21:16

I have never seen a scary clown. that's a lie, every one of the fuckers is creepy.
