To dislike all animals?

PineappleFwitters · 02/10/2016 09:32

I've never liked animals. From the time I was a child, probably due to a dog chasing me at age 4. Dogs, cats, birds, farm animals, I don't like being around them and don't like them near me. I have no interest in seeing videos of funny cats or dogs in YouTube either.

However, when I tell people I don't like animals, they look at me like I should be committed! Or worse, they think I advocate cruelty to animals, which couldn't be further from the truth. I would never try to injure an animal - I'm a vegan FFS - I just don't like being around them.

Am I really that unusual?

Mrs Jayy, I wish all pet owners were as balanced as you.

happyandsingle · 02/10/2016 13:23

come join I think you will find most people who love animals have no hidden agenda as to why they love there animals-you make it sound that pet owners are control freak who like animals because they can't answer back-utter tosh.
And as for the post about rescuing animals from war zones-why not? we do it for humans and many of these animals rescued go on to lead happy lives in safe environments.
A lot of people just don't value the life of an animal much which is sad.

Brazenhussy0 · 02/10/2016 13:26

Backingvocals, saying 'I dislike all other species' isn't the same thing as saying ' I have most in common with and connect best with my own species' though, is it?

I don't have anything in common with cats, but I still like them.

Ohdearducks · 02/10/2016 13:29

It's almost as if people are different and like and dislike different things, like we're all individuals. How strange.

namechangingagainagain · 02/10/2016 13:35

Ah this reminds me of an argument with my sister.
She said that if her dog and a random baby were drowning she would save her dog first....Shock I told her she was a complete fucking idiot and we fell out for a while. I'm still not entirely sure whether he meant it or not. (Hello dsis if you read this!)
I don't like animals. I find people being in love/loved by pets a bit weird... Especially when they claim to like animals more than people. Most dogs will "love" anyone who gives them fuss and food.....but it's not "love" really is it!

EastMidsMummy · 02/10/2016 13:36

Animals are fine out in the animal outdoors, where they belong. I don't get why anyone would want to bring the smelly, dirty, licky, bitey, scratchy, needy, dumb things inside, unless it's to eat them.

Anyone who says "he understands every word I say", "he cuddles up on my bed with my every night" or "I prefer most animals to most people" sounds like a fucking psychopath to me.

missbishi · 02/10/2016 13:49

sounds a lot like envy. I wouldn't even want to be involved in the negative energy it takes to hate on puppies and kittens who are starting out in this world.

I would say you have some kind of attention-seeking thing going on. Are you 12?

What you need is assertiveness training. Just don't think you have a right to them not being present. There's nothing offensive about the sight of an animal. Perhaps you will meet a sweet, interesting animal one day who will change your mind.

Caipira · 02/10/2016 13:57

Yesterday children, today animals, what's tomorrow's theme? Chocolate? Disney? Flowers?

People are often indifferent or don't overly like things that others may really like. That's normal. But when people actively dislike things that are commonly liked, then that can be a need to stand out from the crowd and may suggest a deeper like a narcissistic personality disorder.

Notso · 02/10/2016 14:08

I like animals. I don't really 'get' having pets, zoo's or horse riding etc at all.

ifyoulikepinacolada · 02/10/2016 14:08

This is to PPs not the OP - I suppose I don't trust people who have a blanket dislike of a category so wide and varied. Managing to dislike every animal ever does, I'm afraid, come across as being narrow minded. I also think when it comes to animals in particular the human race has a massive superiority complex - we think we're the best because we do things our way, but we'd never have come this far if we hadn't been able to domesticate and train several breeds.

There's a difference between being ambivalent about animals and actively disliking them, and I take no issue with the former (which is actually what you sound like, OP). But anybody who has no interest in understanding what a creature has to offer to the world around them - and, yes, to us as humans - simply because its needs, lifestyle, and methods of communication are not the same as ours, is not somebody I would choose to have in my life.

For instance, we still haven't developed technology to surpass the ability of a sniffer dog, or a support dog who can help somebody with severe epilepsy or diabetes to live independently. We copy whales and dolphins to develop underwater communications technology. We can't come up with a more efficient fertiliser to grow crops to support our booming population. We use pigs to find truffles, goats to manage invasive plants, rats to sniff out landlines, horses to fight our wars up until very recently... The list goes on and on! I take no issue with people who decide that pets aren't for them, but people who can't appreciate the animal kingdom and our reliance on it, full stop? I'm sorry, but that implies an almost wilful level of ignorance and blinkeredness and those are qualities I find difficult to trust.

PineappleFwitters · 02/10/2016 14:22

missbishi your post is ridiculous. I am neither envious of animals or attention-seeking. I merely don't like being around them.

However, my lack of interest in them doesn't extend to cruelty to them or eating them, which is probably more than I can say for some animal lovers!

neveradullmoment99 · 02/10/2016 14:24

I don't really like animals either. Neither did my gran. I don't think its that unusual.

Puppymouse · 02/10/2016 14:25

That's how I feel about people OP. I think it's horses for courses ('scuse the pun) and you are entitled to dislike whatever you choose as long as it doesn't inflict cruelty. But I would go mad without my animals and am way happier around them than people. Everybody's different Smile

BathshuaSpooner · 02/10/2016 14:31

I adore my children, husband and my cats. I prefer animals to people.

exLtEveDallas · 02/10/2016 14:38

I don't understand how people can say they don't like 'animals'. I'd understand 'I don't like dogs' or 'cats' or 'snakes' and so on, but a blanket 'animals' seems like overkill to me.

I understand people that say they 'don't like children', or even 'don't like men/women' but I've never heard anyone say they 'don't like human beings'.

It's the blanket statement that I find weird. Have those people even seen/met ALL the animal species in the world? I very much doubt it, so how can they say they don't like them? It's a little...simplistic.

(I like most of the animals I have met. I'm not too keen on African Painted Dogs though as their eyes scare me. Oh and mosquitos, never met one yet that I didn't try to kill)

RaskolnikovsGarret · 02/10/2016 14:38

Not liking animals means you are narcissistic!!?? I've heard everything now! I think these views show just how blinkered some, and it is only some, animal lovers can be. Surely it is just a matter of preference, and that's it?

dovesong · 02/10/2016 14:41

I'm actually a little similar to you. I'm not big on animals - although I like dogs I wouldn't ever want to own ones - but am fiercely opposed to cruelty to animals and am vegan and very careful about cosmetics and fashion. Seems mad to me that people ramble on about how much they love animals and then cheerfully participate in industries that make them suffer greatly. Would much rather be like you than someone who adores their Labradors and cheerfully tucks into factory farmed meat - far less hypocritical.

Mynestisfullofempty · 02/10/2016 14:42

I like animals because they're made of meat. Lovely.

Realhousewivesofshit · 02/10/2016 14:48

I defy anyone on this earth to dislike my small dog. Grin

Beg2differ · 02/10/2016 14:52

Declaring you 'don't like animals' is so odd to me because they are such a huge part of our natural world. How can someone dislike something so fundamental and so varied and conscious and capable of the same basic emotions that we have. Tbh it would suggest to me a general problem with empathy. I think that's why people often don't trust people who maintain this

Shockers · 02/10/2016 14:53

I really love animals. I also love watching DH and the DCs interacting with ours. My life would be much less content without my furry friends.

I wouldn't force them on anyone else though.

LunaLoveg00d · 02/10/2016 14:57

Realhousewives - however lovely your dog might be to you, I would be completely indifferent to it. I would not want to see pictures of it, talk about it or even express an interest in it. If it barked at me, jumped on me or slobbered all over me, yes I would actively dislike it.

I am interested in wildlife and think it's amazing to see things like otters, dolphins or whales in the seas around Scotland and I was delighted to see the deer were back in the field behind my house the other night. As for cats, dogs and other pets I find them all a bit.... meh. Just completely disinterested in them.

And people who start talking about "furbabies" just make me cringe.

user1470579884 · 02/10/2016 14:59

Animals saved my life when I was divorced first time, they were always there, non judgemental and great company all the time. I have loads of them, my mother and two sisters can't stand animals and wouldn't have on in the house. No idea why.

FireSquirrel · 02/10/2016 15:54

Unusual but not unreasonable. As long as you don't actively wish them harm and wouldn't be cruel to one then you're entitled to feel however you like about animals. I personally love animals and can't imagine them not being a big part of my life but we're all different, each to their own :)

buckyou · 02/10/2016 16:02

Isnt it a bit strange to not like any other living thing in the world other than humans? Fair enough to not like pets but to have no interest or like for any animal? Bit odd.
