To dislike all animals?

PineappleFwitters · 02/10/2016 09:32

I've never liked animals. From the time I was a child, probably due to a dog chasing me at age 4. Dogs, cats, birds, farm animals, I don't like being around them and don't like them near me. I have no interest in seeing videos of funny cats or dogs in YouTube either.

However, when I tell people I don't like animals, they look at me like I should be committed! Or worse, they think I advocate cruelty to animals, which couldn't be further from the truth. I would never try to injure an animal - I'm a vegan FFS - I just don't like being around them.

Am I really that unusual?

I certainly couldn't be in a relationship with someone who didn't like animals.

formerbabe · 02/10/2016 10:27

No honestly it's very different. In a group of people, someone will show off a photo of their puppy. This results in everyone squealing and screeching in delight. You look like a right weirdo if you don't join in.

LunaLoveg00d · 02/10/2016 10:29

My daughter is like this. She is terrified of dogs after a very bad experience with one and doesn't like any animals either. She thinks that pictures of kittens are cute and enjoys watching nature programmes on TV, she just has no interest in being near animals, touching animals (or worse, having animals touch her) and has never asked for a pet.

I'm not an animal lover either to be fair, would never actively wish pain or suffering on an animal but don't go out of my way to have animals in the house or ooh and aah over someone's cat/dog. I also make a point of supporting "people" charities rather than animal charities because I don't think an animal ever trumps a staving or suffering child.

"I also make a point of supporting "people" charities rather than animal charities because I don't think an animal ever trumps a staving or suffering child*

Completely agree. I would never give money to an animal charity when there are children suffering in the world.

limitedperiodonly · 02/10/2016 10:32

No it's not. Just say: 'He's nice', unless you want to provoke a reaction and then I'd recommend: 'Dogs don't deserve to live' which is what someone said to me on seeing a cat in the street recently. That was odd behaviour.

I always give to animal charity's over human ones. Animals give so much to people there are therapy dogs, they offer great companionship. my cat is the best cure for depression he lifts my mood when I spend time with him.
I think the benefit of animals is undervalued in society.

WaitrosePigeon · 02/10/2016 10:40

I find it very odd when people dislike a whole category of something.

It's like saying I hate all lawn mowers. It's a bit weird?

limitedperiodonly · 02/10/2016 10:40

It's up to you. I don't give to animal charities either nor to children's ones or charities raising money for cancer. I've nothing against them, except for Macmillan and the RSPCA, but think they get a lot of money, so instead I give to mental health charities and charities supporting the rehabilitation of offenders, which mean something to me and IMO are less likely to receive support.

PinkyOfPie · 02/10/2016 10:43

YANBU. I'm am wholely indifferent towards animals, I rarely find them adorable but of course would not wish by pain on them etc etc.

I dislike dogs. It's not their fault, it's usually because their owners see them as "fur babies" and I assume I want them to jump all over me and have their smelly hair and slather on my clothes, yak! I've now honed the art though of telling people that dogs make me very nervous and most people react well and pull them away. But dogs mostly make me feel sick (sorry dog lovers).

I don't trust people who like animals more than humans. When (Cecil??) that lion was glory killed I think the term is and the killer posed proudly, some people wanted his head on a stick. Which is absolutely fair enough, but I tend the find the over-frothers are the same people who'll victim blame when a woman is raped or not give a shit when a human child is mistreated. A few people went all out on Facebook about that lion and how the killer should be hanged, but would also share memes about how "consent works both ways, if a woman can't consent while drunk neither can a man" Hmm.

Maybe that's just my circle of weirdos though?

PinkyOfPie · 02/10/2016 10:44

Waitrose I hate all lawnmowers because I'm shit at handling them are you lawnmower shaming me? Wink

WaitrosePigeon · 02/10/2016 10:46

Pinky I think you're projecting your insecurity over lawn mowers onto me.

Have you spoken to your GP about your phobia? Maybe you should book a spa day after logging your complaint with 101.

I sense a theme.Hmm

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 02/10/2016 10:47

Aside from cats. And elephsnts. I only like them when they're babies.

limitedperiodonly · 02/10/2016 10:52

I don't like the wearing of flip flops outside a beach holiday setting. I'd try to hold on to the thought that I liked the person before I saw their toes on a London pavement or in the office, but I would judge them. There, I've said it now.

MrsJayy · 02/10/2016 10:52

I am going to come over all worthy and smug but i support an animal charity that provides jobs for people to feed their families to help combat poaching so its win win really

DonaldStott · 02/10/2016 10:55

Yadnbu. I can't be arsed with animals. What pet owners don't seem to grasp is that other people don't love their pets as much as they do. I hate anything with wings. I much prefer people over animals and can't understand how people give to animal charities over humanitarian charities.

RaskolnikovsGarret · 02/10/2016 11:02

I understand completely why people like dogs, but I find many dog lovers quite unable to grasp why everyone doesn't adore the animals. I admire and respect animals, but would never want a pet in the house (and indeed I find the concept of pet ownership quite cruel, as you are 'imprisoning' them against their will - apart from cats, who can roam freely. Am quite aware everyone will disagree with me on this!).

There is a lady in my team at work, who is so nasty that people have left because of her, but she is obsessed with animals. So I don't buy the 'all animal lovers are lovely people' thing at all.

I know lots of remarkably kind people who don't want pets and don't love animals. I find the not trusting people who don't like animals very odd indeed. Not liking animals does not mean that you wish harm on them. People are good and bad, animal lovers or otherwise.

MrsJayy · 02/10/2016 11:07

Im not that arsed who likes my dog he is not that friendly and i would never allow him to jump all over you he isnt a furbaby he is a dog .

I don't understand why people don't like dogs, even when they've had a bad experience with one.

I had a bad experience with a woman called Abigail, which makes me wary of people who exhibit behaviour like her but doesn't make me dislike all women called Abigail or anyone with badly cracked heels which was another of her outstanding features, but one which though distressing to witness, was one of her more benign attributes.

Sparklingbrook · 02/10/2016 11:18

I am not keen on dogs. I have been bitten. But mainly it's the smell, the slobber/breath and the barking for no reason that I find unappealing. So I don't have a dog. But loads of people love dogs and I have no problem with that.

windowsneedaclean · 02/10/2016 11:19

Do you not even think kittens are a teeny bit cute....?Wink

MrsJayy · 02/10/2016 11:22

Cats smell too they do that leg in the air licking their bits thing and bring you presents
