Oh and I saved up to buy it so it's mine all mine.

holycrow I'm certainly not envious Hmm a car gets me from a to b. I'd rather spend my hard earned cash on something much more meaningful than a car

yanbu! I have big 4x4s used to tow trailers with livestock about, but I have a normal car to use for everyday stuff.

Wow lot of green eyed monsters on this thread!

My family had two cars growing up - a 4x4 and a smaller car - the smaller car used normally but there's no getting away with the fact 4x4s are very useful when you live in the sticks.

No, he is self employed, a business he built from the ground up, starting with nothing, and is still working 50 hours a week to keep going. And for the record I'm a teacher, but I don't actually have any car and we can manage with one.....and I walk the kids to school so I'm not the grass verge culprit 😂

My sister refers to them as "new money" cars. I'm not sure what "old money" cars are though? Bentleys? Confused

I think they are too big for everyday driving tbh i.e. School run/shopping etc. However I'd love a nice big car so I'm a total hypocrite. I wouldn't say no to one but agree they are a bit indulgent and not necessary for most road users.

Rangerovers dominate the streets of SW London and are totally inappropriate and generally driven by idiots.

Report

Not green eyed. Also drive expensive car. Just think they are too big for SW London. Completely inappropriate.

I don't buy the "so much safer than a smaller car" argument holycow According to euroncap.com my normal sized car is 5% safer for an adult passenger, 6% safer for a child and, crucially, 15% safer for any poor pedestrian that gets run over by one.

And bingo!

Anyone who points out that in certain environments oversized 4x4 are an inconvenience and unnecessary is 'jealous'. No, we just have to live with the consequences of your choices.

me too. I've now found myself in the position that my mountain bike is possibly worth more than my car. My RR-driving friend would be Shock at what I'd paid for it. I'm really not interested in cars, could easily afford something much better but just CBA.

The people saying they live in the arse end of nowhere on a farm etc. Totally get the need for a 4x4 in that situation.

It's the ones that have clearly never left the city centre that are unnecessary. They're just a bit wanky in that scenario.

And jealous? Don't make me laugh, could buy one, choose not to as I don't need one. I live in the city and never have the need to drive down a muddy road.

BlancheBlue · 01/10/2016 19:15

The people saying they live on a farm and that is why they are a RR are bullshitting it. "Proper" farmers have a defender or at a push a discovery.

Suggest "living on a farm" in this context means they own a large period farm house in the home counties.

I have a diffferent brand 4x4. I live semi-rurally and its bloody marvellous in winter/wet, muddy country lanes etc.

I can park it without any issue. Interestingly the people I see struggling in a passing place are the ones who drive smaller cars and actually have no idea of their own vehicle's dimensions. Yes, I am talking about you Miss Saxo who "couldn't" fit through a gap I could have fit through...

Its nothing to do with the car and everything to do with poor drivers

Picklesarnie I speak from experience, we were lucky the boot took so much of the impact, not many cars could have been crushed so much without hurting the occupants in the back (well luckily minor injuries) 😕

Now I've never come across a MNetter who claims to drive a Bentley. Perhaps that needs a new thread.

I'm a teacher! I use my RR every day to go to school.

Nope, it's a working farm. I don't like driving the defender, it's like a bloody tractor to drive, I leave that to DH.

I did a LR driving experience offroad in an Evoque and genuinely loved it - they are amazing doing what they are built for but that isn't the school/waitrose run!!! The white evoques are for the middle aged slightly overweight blondes on the hairdresser run for a wash and dry; the black range rovers are for young petite long haired blondes with microscopic children, skinny jeans and pristine le chameau wellies that have clearly never been near a field. Both are fab entertainment for watching reverse or go in any direction that isn't forwards.

I'm sorry, but did I just read that you are driving a Berlingo OP!?
You are in no place to pass judgement on any vehicle, ever.

I drive a Range Rover and it's lovely I think some of you are being too judgey here.

I can't stand the things they are so ugly and yes very 'new money' look at me type vehicles. Cross my heart hope to die I do not have one iota of jealousy in my body over the wretched things. They are nearly always black and yes driven by blonde, entitled looking women who couldn't give a rat's arse about anyone else on the road.

Of course it is totally different for someone living in the Pennies or moving livestock etc.

I'' not sizist. I just think that most rr owners don't need one.
I'm more accepting/sympatheitic to other 4x4s on the road (unless its a lexus or bmw as again pointless)

FIL drives a RR. Definitely "new money". He got it stuck in the mud whilst out shooting once, I don't think he had the faintest idea of how ridiculous that made him look. PMSL.
