Certain dog types are aspirational now? Which ones? Oh dear, my scabby mutt will not meet the mark I fear. (But she's v clever and we adore her)

MaQueen · 04/10/2016 10:19

navy yes, I know labs are standard MC issue.

I meant they're aspirational for people who think they can buy middle class-dom Grin

My black lab was the only boy in the litter so we didn't really get a choice on the colour as we wanted a boy. Confused

My old spaniel was black too. Does that have some daft hidden meaning for all the Daily Fail reading mentality?

LikeDylanInTheMovies · 04/10/2016 11:34

I'd say if you really want middle-class points, a rescue Staffie is the way to go. I've seen plenty of MC knit your own yoghurt types floating around with a Staffie in tow.

Though I (gently) mock, it is probably better than running out and getting the latest designer dog and it is good they can see past the reputation and aggressive appearance of the dogs. Apparently they're really good around children too.

WaitrosePigeon · 04/10/2016 11:57

We are a naice MC family and we have a Yorkshire terrier rat are we still MC Shock

limitedperiodonly · 04/10/2016 12:24

I have a Siamese cat which probably marks me out as desperately naff. Worse, he is quite an unusual one with tabby points, which probably condemns me as irredeemably try-hard. And that's before you consider the very common bubblegum pink acrylic blanket and Sky remote in the picture.

I mentioned it so you don't have to.

But he was free to a good home and is rather lovely, isn't he?

It's moved on a bit now but the first 3/4 of this thread are so bloody MN. The little place in the world where it's not ok to be:
A RR driver
Overweight
Middle aged
Blonde
A female driver
Working class with more than two bob in your pocket
Aspirational

This place is exhaustingly judgey sometimes.

APlaceOnTheCouch · 04/10/2016 13:44

limited your Siamese is lovely and looks distinctly UC to me but I have a tendency towards the flashy and aspirational so what do I know?.

AsicsGel · 04/10/2016 13:47

Male could be added to that list...

droolinggimp · 04/10/2016 13:59

So a Rangerover is 13cm longer than a Mondeo and 13cm wider each side. Not what you would call 'taking over the road' Jeez, get a grip.

JacquesHammer · 04/10/2016 14:06

I love the idea of people decrying RR owners as "vulgar".

When they are commenting on other's perfectly reasonable choices.

Irony Grin

KatoPotato · 04/10/2016 14:39

Qashqais...

Just leaving that here...

hifi · 04/10/2016 14:49

the are really comfortable to drive, the kids have screens to watch in the back, there's a mini fridge in the arm rest.heated seats front and back. Whats not to like?
we are a 2 RR family in a built up area, shove that in your pipe and smoke it.

MaQueen · 04/10/2016 15:13

navy gawd, yes you're absolutely right...do you mean those Labradoodle thingies Grin

sofato5miles · 04/10/2016 15:23

I am an unabashed RR owner. Just love it. We also have a very knackered old volvo that costs the same to fix up every year as it's value nowadays. But we love it too.

I am also:
Middle aged
Overweight
Non blonde
A woman driver
Working class parents who were vair aspirational.

Nightmare -not-

£600 for what, let's face it, is a mongrel...I bet the breeder was smirking up their sleeve Grin

user1470043860 · 04/10/2016 15:45

More like 95% to be honest.

You can taste the smell of road entitlement as they drive past.

I like to take them on. For a laugh.

limitedperiodonly · 04/10/2016 15:50

There's nothing inherently wrong with crossbreeds. Many of the best types of cattle, sheep, horses and dogs are crossbreeds, bred for the various 'good' attributes of their parents.

For instance, the borzoi is a cross between the saluki from the Middle East and the Irish Wolfhound. There were probably some other refinements along the way, but in the end the Russian nobility came up with a hunting dog that combined speed and stamina with weight and a protective coat that could bring down deer and wolves in freezing temperatures.

Borzoi pups are not cheap and I don't think anyone would suggest that their owners are stupid. We nearly got one but we went for a saluki instead. Several people offered us money to mate her with various heavier dogs to produce lurchers. But she was our pet, so we declined. But those lurcher pups would probably have been expensive if they'd turned out to be fast and efficient hunters.

My own dear Nobby is the result of the chance mating of a chocolate point Siamese and a humble tabby moggy about 60 years ago. He's purely decorative and has never killed anything.

limitedperiodonly · 04/10/2016 16:18

The breeder of Valegro is probably smirking seeing as the horse now worth millions, originated as a crossbreed designed to do farmwork in the week and take the family to church on Sundays about 90 years ago.

But the joke would be on those people who once dismissed what became the Dutch Warmblood as mongrels, I guess.

MaQueen · 04/10/2016 16:35
