to object to a slim fast soup promotional pack being put in dd's tray at nursery

it is all trendy packaging and says something along the lines of 'yummy soup in your tummy makes you a yummy mummy' barf!

i object to this on so many levels!

1 - exposing dd aged 3 to the diet industry (ok she probably hasn't a clue but this is my high horse)
2 - using my childs tray as a marketing device.
3 - the phrase yummy mummy
4 - slim fast is evil.

The only things I expect to see my child coming out of school or nursery with is marketing to do with education and sporting/social activities, after all that is what they are there for. If I want product placement I will go to shops or look in glossy magazines.

hunkermunker · 06/02/2007 23:27

Marketing is what my letterbox is for.

Not my child.

Simple as that.

And I don't see how you can go "oh, well Slimfast's ok" but other stuff isn't. It either all is OK, or it all isn't.

Or does nobody have principles any more?

[cuts off nose to spite face, but might as well, since I'm not having any of yer freebie luxury face cream either]

crystalpony · 06/02/2007 23:27

So the debate didn't originate specifically around slim fast soup freebies then? I think you'll find that it did..

thisisdavina · 06/02/2007 23:29

My wine is all drunk and my night cream awaits.

Good night all!

hunkermunker · 06/02/2007 23:29

Debates don't have to stay with the original inspiration for them though, CP.

See my post about principles for further clarification of how the topic has moved on.

Greensleeves · 06/02/2007 23:29

Yes, crystalpony. It's all about soup. We're getting all hot and bothered about soup.

crystalpony · 06/02/2007 23:30

Anyway, they weren't selling, they we're giving. We as the customers decided whether they make a sale or not. True?

crystalpony · 06/02/2007 23:31

I recommend a nice gazpachio for when you're feeling hot and bothered - works a treat

hunkermunker · 06/02/2007 23:31

[starts handing out nuclear waste]

What can I say? I'm just the giving kind!

crystalpony · 06/02/2007 23:32

I know hunker, we were discussing how it had originated, not how it moved on..

Greensleeves · 06/02/2007 23:32

Oh go on then, it's just the one. After all, it's free, we can't just chuck it away

ComeOVeneer · 06/02/2007 23:33

Soup is only worth it if it is home made . Hunker, I am in your corner on this one, but don't have the same stamina as you for late nights, so see you later. (PS Ikea?)

Greensleeves · 06/02/2007 23:33

Well you weren't strictly discussing either, crystalpony, you were just bleating distractedly about "soup, soup!" like Finbar Saunders

hunkermunker · 06/02/2007 23:35

(Ooh, yes, Ikea - will have to sort that out!)

Any nursery worth its' salt (sic) would have worked out how to make play dough from slim fast cack, thereby saving money, benefitting the children, and insulting no-one but the marketing department.

Greensleeves · 06/02/2007 23:37

Oh no Violet, can you imagine the stench of the stuff?

hunkermunker · 06/02/2007 23:38

No, it was full-fat uranium. The lite stuff gives you cancer!

crystalpony · 06/02/2007 23:40

That's right, greeny, you're fab and witty, I'm crap and fick. As if we were discussing anything - the very thought!!!!

Greensleeves · 06/02/2007 23:41

I didn't say you were crap and fick - I don't know you. But thanks for the compliments - floral tributes to be left at the door

beckybrastraps · 06/02/2007 23:42

LOL at greensleeves' bipolar MN

mythumbelinas · 06/02/2007 23:43

Sadly though, Slimfast does sell, and mums who think they need to go on a diet, are the target. Probs not right to send to nursery, but again this is the time to tell the child, who does ask, that this type of product and approach is suitable for the bin.

ComeOVeneer · 06/02/2007 23:44

OK i have taken the laptop to bed (how sad is that). OOps my darling, long time no see how are you, have you moved?

NurseryDays · 06/02/2007 23:45

Sorry for any offence I caused anyone. The parcel was delivered, opened as is any delivery that is made. The decision was made that some parents may find it useful and it may save some parents money if they were already using the product as it proved to do so with one parents sister who ended up taking the rest of the box. As far as I can see, time was not wasted making phone calls to return product, children were not used to give product to parents, parents who chose to take it took it of their own freewill. BTW no one complained we only had thanks from those who were pleased to receive it. I will go and stand in the corner and hang my head in shame now.

madamez · 06/02/2007 23:46

Hmm. How would you feel if the nursery was giving out free samples of skin-lightening creams? The same toxic message: you are unacceptable because of the way you look so please buy and use this junk product that may actually harm you.

Not knocking the nursery workers or anyone else who dumped the crap in a box and allowed free choice but would write a nasty letter to the company producing it.
