Being middle class based on what you own?

Anyone seen this "quiz" in the telegraph - aside from the fact that it is probably just to flog certain items, anyone agree with this list or come out with all of them.

Hot tubs ffs? "vulgar" no? Wink

It is amusing that some people say the quiz is a bit of fun and they scoff at it yet they tell us this sort of thing:

"NB: I am typing this on a MacBook Air in a minimalist kitchen in my period house in north London but NOT MIDDLE CLASS according to the quiz)"

Weird...

PoppyBirdOnAWire · 29/09/2016 13:35

How old is your period house?
My period house is 351 years old and boasts a bridal stone!! Go me!!!

chinlo · 29/09/2016 13:36

I got 2 - "You are NOT middle class"

Actually I'm just so middle class that I eschew material possessions and live a semi-self-sustainable lifestyle.

Take that, stupid article!

EddieHitler · 29/09/2016 13:36

Vinyl records were the only thing on the list that we own, so according to the quiz, we're not middle class. It's true, we're not.

RortyCrankle · 29/09/2016 13:36

0/10 - I must be among the dregs Hmm and ridiculous to include hot tubs in that list, they are definitely more (dare I say the word on here) chavy.

Fortunately I know what I am and don't need a list of items that would indicate materialism rather than class.

Cellardoor23 · 29/09/2016 13:37

I honestly don't know what class I am. I don't have an accent. But if people had to guess where I was from it would probably be South of England somewhere.

I think it boils down to etiquette.

PoppyBirdOnAWire · 29/09/2016 13:37

"londonrach

If i get a henry vac and get rid of my useless dyson i owe none of them. Strangely i dont care. Think its american thing rather than british!"

Au contraire. The British are obsessed with class. (See this thread.) Americans are very different.

RitchyBestingFace · 29/09/2016 13:38

I actually flinched a bit at writing that Poppy because my house is Edwardian and therefore rather pedestrian and noove.

To be clear, I am LOWER MIDDLE.

chinlo · 29/09/2016 13:40

I don't know what half of them are / have never heard of them!

Nutribullet ?? - either a juicer or a weird sex toy
Antler or Samsonite luggage ?? - some really strong luggage?
Spiralizer ??? - no idea!!
Mulberry Bag ? - Is this the new Burberry but for the middle classes?
Smeg Fridge ?? - Sounds gross though. Why on earth would you call your brand Smeg?
Brompton Bike ?? - Is it like a penny-farthing? Those are pretty hipster these days, right?

Teahornet · 29/09/2016 13:40

My period house is 351 years old

Please, God, someone come on and claim to be Mumsnetting from a Norman keep with authentic 'William the Conqueror woz 'ere' graffitti'. Grin

badtime · 29/09/2016 13:42

MissEliza, everybody (who speaks) has an accent.

PoppyBirdOnAWire · 29/09/2016 13:42

Hahahaha

PoppyBirdOnAWire · 29/09/2016 13:43

@Tea

Butteredparsn1ps · 29/09/2016 13:52

I'll bite. Tea although it's DM's house! Its 800 years + and has had royalty stay in it. I can't actually MN from there as there's no signal so I go to the nearby coffee shop

DM doesn't own any of the items on the list.

whovillewho · 29/09/2016 13:59

Well wehave just one thing from the list - a barbecue - and tbh living in Australia the idea that this is a 'middle class' item is just bloody ridiculous!

Sunshineonacloudyday · 29/09/2016 14:03

I think they are trying to get you to go out and spend more money. That old saying follow the Jones next door. Why would I want to own all of that stuff for what a ridiculous survey.

acsec · 29/09/2016 14:21

Solidly middle class apparently!

dodobookends · 29/09/2016 14:27

All this talk of money and having the 'right' possessions... how terribly common Grin

ItShouldHaveBeenJess · 29/09/2016 14:30

Hasn't come as a huge shock that I am NOT middle class. I own none of these things. I've seen a Smeg fridge (red, very nice) but only in a holiday cottage I was cleaning at the time.

Spiralizer: clueless. Am guessing it makes pretty little curls out of fruit or veg. As for the fancy bike, I have an ancient Muddy Fox (can't ride it though).

CuddlesAndCupcakes · 29/09/2016 14:32

RitchyBestingFace iMac is the the desktop.

dodobookends · 29/09/2016 14:33

Must dash - need to go and prune the topiary while the weather holds

ivykaty44 · 29/09/2016 14:34

I'm definitely not middle class, that was close.....

alrightarekid · 29/09/2016 14:34

Haha! I noticed poppy being snobby and cringe on more than one thread also. Looks like you have two personal stalkers!

Verbena37 · 29/09/2016 14:38

This is hilarious!
I didn't the quiz and got NOT middle class, then I took the next quiz it suggested which was 'how posh are you?' And said I was solidly middle class Grin.

You can't judge people by class anymore.
I have known some of the loveliest what would have been called upper class people and some of the rudest upper class people ever....same with what would have been called middle class and what would have been called lower class.

I would rather people liked me for being me rather than what our annual income is or whether we have an aga or not.

minipie · 29/09/2016 14:41

Verbena I don't think anyone's ever said class is related to niceness Confused Even back in the days when the classes were much more distinct (Downton Abbey days) - there were nice and not nice in all classes.
