AIBU?

COULD MY HOUSE HAVE A GHOST?

Since last year I have had strange going ons in my house. For example - seeing things out of the corner of my eyes, a quick glimpse of ghost child, a white sort of apparition walking around my bed at night when I was trying to get to sleep and something white being thrown in my direction and when I look to pick it up it is not there.

Could I be imagining these things?

No. What is important is what you know

"No. What is important is what you know"

Wow, bit harsh Betrand! You really don't like people having a difference of opinion to you, do you?

The OP asked if they were being unreasonable; some have leaned to yes and some to no. Can we not just leave it at that?

I don't mind at all. How come your categorical statement is fine, but mine is a bit harsh?

Which categorical statement was that?

Yes you could be imagining things or yes you could have a ghost! I have one.

Dyatlov Pass is a good example of something relatively ordinary being blown out of all proportion by sensationalist reporters (and in some cases inventing new details, like the radiation thing).

Nobody here (or anywhere else) can tell you if you have a ghost/spirit manifesting in your house 🏠 or not. BTW ignore anyone claiming they don't exist; that's just ignorance. No genuine scientist would ever make such a claim as a statement of fact because they know they can't.

To get back to what may or may not be going on in your house 🏠. Seeing stuff is all very well, but your case would be strengthened if other people than yourself have witnessed any phenomena. From personal experience, things to be aware of include:

*Objects moving around, in locked, empty i.e. no people in them.
*Objects moving in a room that you're in, usually out of your sight e.g. behind your back. I'm not talking about being blown or knocked by draughts or vibrations, but very obviously moved, sometimes several feet across the room.
*Objects that seem to "disappear", and then suddenly reappear in a place that you KNOW you have checked previously. I'm not talking about mislaying things but walking 🚶 into a room and seeing the object e.g. on a table when it was not there a few minutes earlier. Obviously this only applies if there are no other people or animals in the house 🏠 at the time.
*Appliances turning on spontaneously, or operating when noone is there them. I've had this happen even when the appliance has been unplugged (no internal battery), so can't blame dodgy electrics.
*Lights switching on or off, including dimmer switches turning from zero to full, so again can't be explained away by electrics.
*Taps turning on again after every time you turn them off, no matter how hard you wrench them shut, and when you know your taps don't normally even drip, and your water pressure is no higher than usual.
*Unexplained noises like footsteps, voices etc. that cannot be explained away by structural sounds, animals within in the walls/loft etc. or sound carried from neighbouring buildings. It's important to rule that out. Again, if someone else other than yourself also hears them, it more reassuring that it isn't just you hearing things.
*And yes, as you mention, seeing things could be significant, but again it's important to rule out any medical or environmental causes, and also check if others have witnessed anything out of the ordinary too.

I would start making a diary and note anything that you think is significant in it. I did so and it helped me in my attempts to make sense of what I've witnessed in the past ten years.

Oh, and look elsewhere for proper advice. This really isn't the best place for it.
Good luck.

I repeat. There has never been any supposed supernatural event that, on investigation, has not been shown to have a perfectly rational explanation. Never. Not one. And while there might be one tomorrow, it is so vanishingly unlikely that for the purposes of colloquial conversation, it is fine to say that ghosts don!t exist. You can't, after all, categorically say that the sun will rise in the east tomorrow, but conversation would grind to a halt if you applied "you can't prove a negative" to everything you talk about.

Oh my cold tap keeps randomly dripping. I've been bugging my landlady to send a plumber round, but maybe I should apply to Derek Acorah instead?

I think you know perfectly well that that it isn't what I meant, but then I think I know perfectly well that you are merely being facetious. Ho hum.

liz70 what evidence do you have that proves the existence of ghosts and if you have such evidence why havent you released it and laughed all the way to the bank, or is it the case that you believe in ghosts, I mean really believe, and if thats the case then youre just wrong.

There are some theorists that believe in the 'stone tape' theory but all that would be if proven would be some sort of 'stone video' replaying the 'event' but even that would mean that there were no ghosts.

Ghosts are meant to be 'left behind' souls, so then belief in ghosts must mean there is belief of an afterlife which also doesnt exist.

liz, tell us more. Which supernatural event has there been that has been thoroughly and properly tested which has been shown to be incapable of a non-supernatural explanation, even when checked by thoroughgoing sceptics?

No,. Your house could not have a ghost. Your mind may have one....but the house, no.

Sorry just being a bit tongue in cheek.

Incidentally I've had the "shadow people" thing for years; it's caused by sleep paralysis (which is horrible).

Ah, couldn't resist poking the bear...though BertrandRussell never did reply to my question...

What about the Miracle of the Sun? I'm not religious, but this is a fairly large event, viewed by nearly 100,00 people, which has yet to have been given a scientific explanation.

There's also the Dropa Stones, or the 300-million year old Kaluga region screw.

But I'm sure you all have concrete explanations for all of these, right?

Where can I find this 'Woo' post mentioned?

Googled Black Eyed Child... thanks for that, might not sleep for a month now Confused

As for ghosts - I have had some spooky experiences and I guess I could say I believe in 'something' but I always try and explain anything spooky with logic first.

I don't understand why so many are so determined NOT to believe. It seems easier to believe than not to imo. Some people have seen ghosts, most haven't. The ones who have, had all the evidence they need. How on earth could they prove it anyway.

Some people have seen ghosts

But how do they know for sure that what they saw was a ghost?

Report
hopetobehappy · 04/10/2016 21:11

I suppose it was because it was something that couldn't be explained away. Not everything can. Just because things can't be proved doesn't mean it isn't so.
