To think this takes not vaccinating to a whole new level

DD has a child at school who has cancer. The school sent a letter home asking all parents to please think about giving their child the MMR if they haven't had it and also to inform them immediately if any child was in contact with chicken pox.

One of the mums at the school is still refusing to have her 3DC vaccinated. No health issues it's big pharma/poison/conspiracy theory crap

AIBU at this point to think the school should seek removal of the children and tell the bloody thicko to find another school for them?

As much as I am pro vaccinations I am also pro choice so if a parent doesn't want their child to have a vaccination, for whatever reason, then they should be left alone and not bullied into it.

missyB1 · 26/09/2016 12:52

When we lived in New Zealand it was no vaccination no school place, time they brought that in here.
The selfishness and stupidity of some people never ceases to amaze me.

^^ I am sure they used to send out reminders but now dont, you have to call to book.

Sadik · 26/09/2016 12:52

"I think it's time we followed those countries who say no vaccinations, no school."

Except not all children can be vaccinated - I've hardly had any vaccines as I reacted badly as a baby early in the course (and as a baby/child was prone to severe allergic reactions with no identifiable cause).

I'm not sure what the right answer would be in that situation?

PrincessOG16 · 26/09/2016 12:53

YANBU

Cherylene · 26/09/2016 12:53

Sorry to derail the thread slightly but dd is 3.5 now and is supposed to have her booster jabs. Am I supposed to wait for a letter or do I ring and just book?

They usually get in touch - if you have changed surgeries, probably worth enquiring.

Yawnyawnallday · 26/09/2016 12:53

TheAnswer: it is not a pro choice issue. Selfish people are making the choice for me. They put me at risk of measles because there is no herd immunity in my area. Choice?

Humidseptember · 26/09/2016 12:54

then they should be left alone and not bullied into it.

^^ normally I would agree but in this case - there is far too high a price to pay.

Op I would be for putting pressure on this parent or on the school.

SukeyTakeItOffAgain · 26/09/2016 12:54

Woo big pharma bullshit or religion does not qualify.

Amen to that. My niece aren't vaccinated. Her mother also has a life limiting condition for which she refuses to take the prescribed medication. She thinks meditation and crystals can heal her. So my niece is going to be prematurely deprived of her mother. Stupid, selfish woman. It's all about HER choice nothing to do with her child.

SukeyTakeItOffAgain · 26/09/2016 12:55

Isn't not aren't.

furryminkymoo · 26/09/2016 12:55

I am confused, if the ill child has had their MMR surely they wouldn't be at risk of catching MMR from the Un Vaccinated children? Or doesn't it work like that?

I vaccinated and am pro vaccinations, I have friends who haven't.

GabsAlot · 26/09/2016 12:56

it very selfish but tbh even a cold can make them really ill

what do they do about that

Yawnyawnallday · 26/09/2016 12:59

Gabsalot: a cold hits immunocompromised people like me pretty hard. Measles can kill.

acasualobserver · 26/09/2016 12:59

As much as I am pro vaccinations I am also pro choice

I can see how you chose your username.

TwatbadgingCuntfuckery · 26/09/2016 13:01

Sadik you would be exempt. You have a genuine reason for not having vaccines. The risk to have them, for you, is far far higher than not.

Everyone around having the jabs will protect you. That's the point. You need a high % of people having vaccines to prevent those that can't from getting very sick.

ChocChocPorridge · 26/09/2016 13:02

The child that's being treated for cancer has had their immune system knocked out by that treatment - they need to keep as safe as possible from any diseases, and unvaccinated kids are obviously significantly more likely to catch a particular disease than those kids vaccinated against it (since no vaccine is 100%)

In answer to someone earlier, no, you wouldn't have to pay to have the MMR if you missed it, universal vaccinations like this are always free

Jemimapuddleduk · 26/09/2016 13:02

YANBU. I have always been so frustrated with people who don't vaccinate their children and even more so now I have a child who is in remission from cancer. The intense chemo my baby ds had has wiped out all the vaccination immunity he had and he is still classed as having a weakened immune system. A similar letter went round the nursery he attends and I have vaccinated my older dd against chicken pox in an effort to protect ds but it still terrifies me. Come January (6 months post chemo completion) he will be able to have his vaccinations again.

QuimReaper · 26/09/2016 13:03

akd my mum is anti-vax so I didn't have my MMR as a baby, and had it for free earlier this year.

I also haven't had my BCG, or even the flower test thingy Hmm

Is there a chicken pox vaccine?

HHH3 · 26/09/2016 13:03

Can I ask a question please Yawn?

I also have MS and have never been told that I'm immuncompromised. I have the flu jab every year because I've been told that having the flu can lead to a relapse. And that really any illness has the potential to make me relapse. But I've never been told that I'm more susceptible to illnesses. Have you been told different?

dailyfailplagiarism · 26/09/2016 13:04

Someone up thread mentioned Australia. In wa where I am there is nothing and non vax is so common that a nearby small school is going through an outbreak of whooping cough. Thirty cases so far.
Eastern states have some sort of thing that is related to dole but don't know the details.

leedy · 26/09/2016 13:04

"I am confused, if the ill child has had their MMR surely they wouldn't be at risk of catching MMR from the Un Vaccinated children? Or doesn't it work like that?"

Vaccinations working rely on the vaccinated person having a fully functioning immune system, but a child having cancer treatment won't have that any more.

ShowMeTheElf · 26/09/2016 13:05

I am confused, if the ill child has had their MMR surely they wouldn't be at risk of catching MMR from the Un Vaccinated children? Or doesn't it work like that?

Chemotherapy knocks out the immune system to such an extent that previous vaccinations are no longer effective, so the sick child is more at risk.

Yawnyawnallday · 26/09/2016 13:05

The child referred to in the op may well have been unable to be vaccinated or their parents didn't vaccinate for other reasons. That is irrelevant now - the child needs the protection of the herd and should get it. The conspiracy theory parent referred to should suck it up and get their children vaccinated to protect someone at risk without herd protection.

AGenie · 26/09/2016 13:06

I agree that it should be no vax, no school place, except for medical exemptions. I also get really angry about families that send ill children in to school, and schools that insist on children coming to school ill just because of the rules about maximising attendance. Ill children should be at home. and unvaxinated children should be vaccinated ASAP.

leedy · 26/09/2016 13:06

"Is there a chicken pox vaccine?"

Yup. Think the one that's available in the UK/Ireland is called Varivax and you can get it privately. Both my kids have had it.
