..annoying. AIBU?

Why can't you just put your foot on the foot brake like normal people. Tsk

I have never heard of changing back to neutral when stopping and I've just passed my driving test

They're certainly not teaching it like that at the mo. Gear in first plus handbrake on

Ameliablue · 19/09/2016 22:54

I think the people who are slow moving off would still be slow if they used foot brake and first gear.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 19/09/2016 23:41

queen really? I'd ask for my money back! If your wait os 5 seconds or longer - neutral plus handbrake.

Youarenotprepared · 20/09/2016 00:02

Hand break neutral is the safest way to stop. Everyone should do it. Twats who inch forward every .5 seconds are far worse.

LikeDylanInTheMovies · 20/09/2016 00:10

People who do handbrake-neutral at the lights are...

Safer and less prone to burning out their clutch.

Thatsmeinthecorner2016 · 20/09/2016 00:17

People who find the handbrake-neutral annoying should re-sit their driving test. It's for safety as you are less likely to hit a car or a pedestrian in front of you should someone rear-end you because they can't wait to move.
Frankly, I find the question extremely asinine and would prefer not to meet the likes of you on the road, OP.

GingerbreadCake · 20/09/2016 00:19

Sensible and safe drivers.

CalleighDoodle · 20/09/2016 00:21

This thread reminded me of this advert

e1y1 · 20/09/2016 00:58

Those absolute bastards, driving correctly, efficiently and safely. Get them off the roads immediately.

It doesn't hold anybody up using handbrake-neutral. But of course OP, your time is sooo much more important than every other road user.

calleigh seen that advert before, it's horrific, but it gets the point across.

SleepDeprivedAndCranky · 20/09/2016 01:01

I do handbrake neutral for auto shut off in my car, it's eco friendly

LadyConstanceDeCoverlet · 20/09/2016 01:30

Another one here who was taught to do handbrake neutral at lights. It certainly doesn't slow me down when starting off again: I regularly find I'me well down the road before the person behind me has got his brain working and started off.

ThriftyMama · 20/09/2016 01:31

PoloZolo this is why I always put the handbrake on

I also refuse to drive alongside lorries in tunnels with multiple lanes, saw one veer out of its lane and squish a car a few years back. I also put my handbrake on then 😋 Am terrified of them now.

londonrach · 20/09/2016 01:33

Yabu...its what you get taught by a driving instructor. Saying that i dont do it now as slip into first ready to go. Bet id fail a driving test now as does anyone who doesnt go into handbrake neutral.

AnnieOnnieMouse · 20/09/2016 02:29

Handbrake neutral here, too.
That meant the car that smashed into the back of my car didn't push me into the back of the one in front.

DoctorDonnaNoble · 20/09/2016 06:02

Always do it. I have enough driving anxiety as it is without worrying about rolling back or being shunted into a pedestrian.
The problem is not people using their handbrake, it's people not paying attention to the lights and seeming to be taken by surprise when they turn green.

JemimaMuddledUp · 20/09/2016 06:09

... correct, safer and not going to burn their clutch out.

YABU and would benefit from some refresher driving lessons.

TwoTwentyGowerRoad · 20/09/2016 06:24

The brake lights in your eyes when in a queue of traffic is the reason to put the handbrake on. I have got so pissed off with this I now put on main beam, if a flash doesn't do it (yes I know I am breaking the Highway Code on two rules there!) It's basic good manners (sadly lacking on today;s roads) With LEDS you can drive away with pinpoint pupils and not be able to see properly fro ages and a lot of vehicles have break lights really high up now too. If it's raining it's ten times worse!

Lucyccfc · 20/09/2016 06:31

I drive a very low car and it drives me mad when a car in front has their foot on the brake pedal, especially at night, as the light dazzle my eyes. White van man and Chelsea tractors are especially annoying. Why can't they do hand-brake/neutral like normal drivers.

CatNip2 · 20/09/2016 06:36

Don't see any issue, why on earth would you sit at busy traffic lights with your foot on the brake, it could take minutes to change the lights. It takes me less than a second to put the car in gear, the handbrake off and set off when I see the lights change to Amber, you wouldn't know I had my handbrake on and was in neutral.

Driving 32 years.

Helloitsme90 · 20/09/2016 06:36

If a pause becomes a stop you should use handbrake- as was taught by my driving instructor 9 years ago.... yabu

cariboo · 20/09/2016 06:38

My right leg aches like fury after 5 minutes of stepping on the brake. Seems logical to me to put the engine in neutral and use the handbrake. Also less wear on the brake pads.

quasibex · 20/09/2016 06:40

YABU and a poor driver if you never do this.

Sometimes I know exactly where I am in the light sequence so will actually hold my car in 'ready' for a few seconds. Otherwise handbrake and neutral is the safest and most car friendly option. My response rate is always quicker than the brake light glaring drivers who (almost) always roll back so maybe you're just a bad driver who is too slow to work out how to use their handbrake, clutch, gear stick and accelerator in good time.

CatNip2 · 20/09/2016 06:42

To those that haven't been taught this as recent drivers I would not dispute, DD recently passed her test in a diesel car, she then got her first car, a far less luxurious petrol basic runaround of aged years, and Couldnt drive for toffee. Stalled constantly and couldn't get going again, because the Audi she learned in you just put your foot on the clutch and it restarted after stalling. She couldn't do clutch control either as the learner car had hill start.

So I took her back to basics, taught her the neutral and handbrake and it revolutionised her driving. No more stalling, her clutch control developed on its own and she feels safe and in control.

JudgeEpantz · 20/09/2016 06:44

They have apparently changed the instructions to stay in gear. It was a failable error to do this whenI learned to drive. Or we are all living to annoy the op.

yeOldeTrout · 20/09/2016 06:51

My car engine turns off automatically which can be a problem with getting going again, not the handbrake.

I was taught very sternly to put the handbrake on (in neutral). I gave the instructor an "Are you mad??" look as he explained that I might get a sudden leg cramp that meant I had to pull my leg off the pedal, if I merely tried to keep my leg on the brake pedal. Plus you hear people rant about being "blinded" by the brake lights of car in front, if folk don't use handbrake.

I actually do a mix, depends what feels safest, how soon I'll move again, how the clutch is, road tilt etc.
