..annoying. AIBU?

Why can't you just put your foot on the foot brake like normal people. Tsk

OP posts:
eurochick · 19/09/2016 21:22

....correct. As mentioned, the handbrake stops the car being shunted forward if hit from behind. Neutral stops the clutch wearing needlessly. Plus you can give your feet a rest.

DramaAlpaca · 19/09/2016 21:22

People who do handbrake-neutral at the lights are...

Correct.

That's how I was taught over 30 years ago.

LokisUnderpants · 19/09/2016 21:23

Auto handbrake on our car. If it stops on a hill it engages until you press the accelerator. When at lights I keep it in drive and use the foot pedal.

HerFaceIsAMapOfTheWorld · 19/09/2016 21:23

it wears the clutch

SciFiFan2015 · 19/09/2016 21:24

I don't like it when footbrake people roll back as they get the 'bite' before moving off and applying my handbrake stopped me jumping forward when a double decker drove into the back of me at lights!
So handbrake on = reasonable
Gear in neutral = not as important

ThisAintALoveSong · 19/09/2016 21:24

As full time mummy said. Wears out your clutch too. Clutch ends up doing more work than it needs to. And they are expensive to replace once they start slipping.

FYI I keep my eyes peeled on the road and often have put myself back in gear from neutral waaaaay before the person in front has taken their foot off the brake. Cos I can't stand people who waste time on roads.

Ratley · 19/09/2016 21:24

It's better for your car to hand-brake neutral. Put it back in gear as lights change. It's efficient if you do it properly.

Bailey101 · 19/09/2016 21:25

Putting your handbrake on is safer then just the footbrake - if you get shunted you're less likely to hit the car in front or pedestrians.

bumpetybumpbumpbump · 19/09/2016 21:26

Stupid post.

Yes you put hand brake on because it is safer.

Hamiltoes · 19/09/2016 21:30

I think this is just one of those posts put up so we can all seethe Grin

Of course you put your handbreak on. Detest people who don't, especially when sitting in the dark in a bloody drive though- I wanted to pull my own eyes out!!

HolgerDanske · 19/09/2016 21:30

People who do that do it because it's the correct way to wait at the lights, unless you are literally at the tail end of the red.

pissflaps45 · 19/09/2016 21:31

I drive an automatic and it chews petrol if I'm stationary with foot on the brake so its hand break, neutral if I'll be stopped for a bit

pictish · 19/09/2016 21:32

That's how I was taught to drive...and plus, you can rotate your feet and give them a bit of light relief.
Having said that, I don't always do it...but if it's a long lights then yeah, I do.

Tsk yourself Miss Impatient.

DinosaursRoar · 19/09/2016 21:33

handbrake neutral here too - was how I was taught and stops your leg aching. Worse case situation, you might have to wait an extra 5 seconds than holding on the foot brake. I don't see why I should fuck up my clutch because you can't get your arse out of the door on time so you can't wait a few seconds without it negatively effecting your day.

(Bet the OP is one of those stressy drivers who think driving up someone's arse hurries them up, whereas I have yet to meet someone who doesn't slow down further when it's clear the person behind is in a rush.)

WankersHacksandThieves · 19/09/2016 21:34

Yup, i'm in the"handbrake on but in gear ready to go brigade" i feking hate it when people sit with their foot on the brake in front of me. If the road is flat then just put the car in gear ready to go - if there is a slope and the car is moving then you put the handbrake on.

PotteringAlong · 19/09/2016 21:35

I do it because I'm driving correctly. And I have a stop start engine.

If you don't, you're not driving properly.

DinosaursRoar · 19/09/2016 21:35

oh yes, the little roll back when you move to the accelerator on a hill. OP - did you realise you were starting a thread that basically said "I drive like a twat!" ? Wink

Evergreen17 · 19/09/2016 21:36

My sisters were run over because someone didnt put the hand break at the lights and the car behind pushed this car.

They were crossing together.
Sorry you find this annoying but it saves lights and you dont dazzle other drivers.
Usually people put hand break but prepare themselves on gear.

BombadierFritz · 19/09/2016 21:36

driving correctly, safely and saving their clutch as well
clever drivers :)

raspberrysuicide · 19/09/2016 21:37

I have an automatic and I put it in Park at traffic lights. I still manage to put it in drive and pull away faster than most other people though

ThePinkOcelot · 19/09/2016 21:38

YABU!! Personally I hate it when people keep their foot on the brake and the brake light shines in your face. And, I was taught not to sit with foot in the brake at lights!

IHeartKingThistle · 19/09/2016 21:39

I'd rather annoy you than kill a pedestrian on a crossing if I was shunted from behind. Call me crazy Hmm

TeaStory · 19/09/2016 21:40

YABU.

www.highwaycode.info/rule/114

And I bloody hate being dazzled by lights, it gives me the rage!

TheLastHeatwave · 19/09/2016 21:41

I have just replaced my clutch again. Can't be arsed with the handbrake most of the time, but might save my credit card some stress 😖

Ego147 · 19/09/2016 21:42

Handbrake goes on.

Engine turns off - because it's a smart car.
Lights change to amber. Handbrake off. Press clutch, change gear. Engine turns on.

Away we go.
