..annoying. AIBU?

Why can't you just put your foot on the foot brake like normal people. Tsk

It's safer and more efficient.

A lot of cars these days even automatically cut the engine when you apply handbrake and put it in neutral. Mine does this. It starts up again simultaneously when you depress the clutch again. There is no delay at all.

Besides you are not supposed to go yet on an amber light, when you see amber that's your time to 'get ready' by releasing handbrake etc. So there really should be no time difference between cars that footbrake and cars that handbrake. www.gov.uk/guidance/the-highway-code/light-signals-controlling-traffic

HenRah · 19/09/2016 21:42

YABU and possible a prickish post.

PaulAnkaTheDog · 19/09/2016 21:42

Think it's your driving standards that are unreasonable.

TheLastHeatwave · 19/09/2016 21:43

I have never, in my 40 years, over half of them as a driver, been bothered by anyone's brake lights and I have sensitive eyes. Very weird.

Olddear · 19/09/2016 21:43

I do handbrake/gear.

I don't have a hand brake

So put that in your Goady Pipe and smoke it

Are you the knob that coyly asked why people don't book all their holidays at the last minute like wot you do ? (can't be arsed to check)

SocksRock · 19/09/2016 21:44

I always put it in neutral - that's how I was taught 20 years ago

And now I feel really old by realising it's 20 years since I learnt to drive. YABU for bringing that to mind...

Evergreen17 · 19/09/2016 21:44

I meant it saves lives Sad

Thinkingblonde · 19/09/2016 21:45

Handbrake on and into neutral gear is how I was taught, it is safer, if you foot slips off the brake you could roll into the car in front( or behind if on a hill). It also save wear and tear on the clutch, I've been driving for years and years and have never burnt a clutch out yet.

I was rear ended by a woman at some traffic lights, she was driving in flip flops, her foot slipped off the brake and she crashed into the back of my car.

I now drive an automatic and still do the hand brake/neutral thing.

BertieBotts · 19/09/2016 21:46

Interesting. I've been taught first + foot brake + clutch, no handbrake. I'm not learning in the UK though. I notice everyone in front of me has their brake lights on as well so I assume it's the done thing here.

Ameliablue · 19/09/2016 21:46

I do because sitting with for on pedal for too long is painful, it is also sensible if on a hill.

Meadows76 · 19/09/2016 21:46

Why can't you just put your foot on the foot brake like normal people

Because that's not what you are supposed to do

BertieBotts · 19/09/2016 21:47

The shunting thing makes sense though. I'll pass first and then see if I can change that habit!

Ameliablue · 19/09/2016 21:47

And why should it have any impact on other drivers?

WankersHacksandThieves · 19/09/2016 21:50

I have never, in my 40 years, over half of them as a driver, been bothered by anyone's brake lights and I have sensitive eyes. Very weird.

Maybe it depends on how high you sit in the car? I'm quite tall and I find that a lot of cars have the brake light at my eye level. It's worse with all these new led type lights and I find it really bad in the dark.

mineofuselessinformation · 19/09/2016 21:51

I'm with emo. My car has an auto stop function if I put it in neutral and am stationery. What's your hurry?

WankersHacksandThieves · 19/09/2016 21:51

...and I've been driving for 30 years.

Lazyafternoon · 19/09/2016 21:53

I thought you were supposed to handbrake on and into neutral whenever you stopped?

Where I learnt to drive there were hills. You can't just sit there with car in gear and breaks on, you need to put the handbrake on. Surely if you are watching the lights and the traffic in other directions you have an idea when lights are due change so can get ready if its a particularly short green sequence. Driving isn't a race. Other drivers aren't out to annoy you. Most of us (I hope) try to drive safely and economically, and not care if the car behind is in more of a rush than you.

Plus my DH moans like hell at me if I sit there with foot on the clutch.

AnyFucker · 19/09/2016 21:54

Fuck, I just realised I have been driving for 33 years

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 19/09/2016 21:55

YABU OP. Are you on of thosebtwats always rolling back before taking off?

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 19/09/2016 21:55

LOL at anyfucker. There's tour sluppers, love. just donmt drive in them

AverysillyoldHector · 19/09/2016 21:56

In neutral with the handbrake on at lights here too.

Someone I know was hit from behind at the lights. He was in gear with his foot on the clutch so the impact caused him to take his foot off the clutch. The car jerked forwards and hit the car in front. He was prosecuted believe it or not, along with the man who hit his car.

Lorelei76 · 19/09/2016 21:56

Are you coming back OP?
What were you taught?

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 19/09/2016 21:56

I'm not drunk Hmm
Your slippers!
