To ask my fellow mumsnetters to find me a home?!

I know I probably am being unreasonable to ask random people on the Internet to find me a home but I am at a loss so hoping for some advice, inspiration and ideas (or for Kirsty and Phil to read this thread 😄)

So, we live in the south east, 20 mins outside of London. 2 children, 2 and 3 and twins on the way. Same sex couple. We would love somewhere with land (not a farm but an acre or 2) and to be close to somewhere vibrant / cultural. Must be an open minded non villagey feel as we grew up being the only gays in our neighbouring northern villages many years ago! We love the south east but it's way too expensive to buy what we need. Basically we would want a lovely property with some land just outside Brighton but we are not millionaires! So, anyone recommend where they live that fulfils any of these criteria? So far thinking maybe countryside near Manchester or Cheshire but really no idea! Thanks everyone in advance (goes back to wasting time on rightmove looking at properties way out of our price range and wondering if it is possible to get any more ginormous than 39 weeks pregnant with twins....)

A beautiful area and Cardiff just up the road - has paddock.

Findmeahome · 19/09/2016 20:07

Thank you everyone, got some really fab ideas and loads of inspiration.

Arhh just remembered theres a small town in the yorkshire dales nearish leeds which is suppose to have about a third of the residents are same sex couples. If I can remember it, you might get the house and land without feeling like the only guys in the village.

I came on to say isle of Wight too, it is very live and let live. Lovely properties too.

OlennasWimple · 19/09/2016 20:08

Build your own dream home?

I wouldn't go to the Isle of Wight, BTW - schools are shocking, and I don't think it's the most open-minded of places

PrincessHairyMclary · 19/09/2016 20:09

Norfolk, you'd get a massive house here for that amount of money. Very horsey area and nice beaches, Norwich is a lovely city, no motorways but about 1 hr 30 mins on train to London

You could have it !! Yes its rural , but its nice living here.... You could do riding or walking holidays / rent out the cottage for holidays and extra income .. That would give you the dosh for regular trips to Southampton or Brighton .. We need doctors (definately ...our local hospital is always understaffedand says its hard to recruit here ) and solicitors seem to do ok here ..

You must be resourceful if you are contemplating moving with imminent (SP someone?) twins.. Good luck with bump..

WinterIsHereJon · 19/09/2016 20:09

Lincolnshire? Where I live is quite rural but not a huge drive to cities like Leeds or Sheffield. Lincoln itself is a lovely city. Property here is very cheap compared to elsewhere in the country.

KickAssAngel · 19/09/2016 20:11

Would you consider somewhere that you could have land but not directly attached to the house? So, you could go there, run free, play with ponies, round up kids and drive back home? That way you could live closer into a city, and still access land/ponies etc.

I know it's a stereotype, but cities often offer greater diversity. I lived in Cambs, north of the city. The town I worked in (out in the Fens) had almost 0 ethnic diversity, and I wasn't aware of one gay couple from the thousands of children in the school I taught in. Cambridge, however, has much greater diversity. You could even, possibly, have a city apartment and weekend retreat, about 20 mins, half an hour away. (I have a friend who does this near Manchester)

And good luck with the twins!

If you fancy Scotland then Bearsden and Milngavie are lovely; 20 minutes to Glasgow city centre and on the door step is some lovely countryside. Safe areas with great schools and £500k would get you a lovely big house.

Maybe I should start a new thread - AIBU to ask my fellow mumsnetters to build me a home? 😀

Welly, that would be Hebden Bridge where the OP could get this stunning place within budget

Wellywanga · 19/09/2016 20:15

After a Quick google its Hebden bridge.

I've moved twice after been settled, its challenging but good and easier when you have young kids.

reup · 19/09/2016 20:15

I was told by some gay friends that Hebden Bridge was very gay friendly. Lots of countryside and not to far from Manchester for the evening. Want Happy Valley filmed there? I'm sure the rent as many evil people there in real life!

Wellywanga · 19/09/2016 20:16

X post thank carrot

reup · 19/09/2016 20:16

Must proof read

Wasn't Happy Valley filmed there? I'm sure there aren't as many evil people ther as in real life.

CarrotVan · 19/09/2016 20:17

Or this for half her budget

Findmeahome · 19/09/2016 20:17

Wow, that hebden property is lovely. Really liked hebden when we visited but it was quite dark (it's in a valley) and felt like a safe bubble but surrounded by really non lgbt friendly areas like Blackburn. definitely worth considering though as we could commute to Manchester from there.

Bit closer to Leeds .

Laska5772 · 19/09/2016 20:20

oleanna some schools are not so good ( or werent in the past but have improved ) , but lots are fine Also there is Ryde school (which is public and has a lower school , has v good results) and Ventnor Free school .

Ive not found it not-open-minded and , yes its maybe not as free as brighton ,. It certainly doesnt seem to be at all gay unfriendly .. ( but you get people who arent open minded everywhere, even Brighton )

Findmeahome · 19/09/2016 20:21

Anyone know where tarpoley (sp?) is? My wife just shouted we should move there as its near Manchester and Chester but pretty countryside. As you can tell she is obviously taking this seriously..... 🙄
