Yes, a trivial AIBU but help to settle the argument!

I believe that crap is a swear word, albeit on the mild end of swearing

My friend believes it is not.

AIBU to think she is wrong and that crap is a swear word?!

DerekSprechenZeDick · 16/09/2016 21:09

Nope crap is not a swear word

Nocabbageinmyeye · 16/09/2016 21:10

Yabu crap is not a swear word

ateapotandacake · 16/09/2016 21:10

If it is a swear word it's a crap one.

I thank you.

TallulahTheTiger · 16/09/2016 21:12

Simon??

IncidentalAnarchist · 16/09/2016 21:12

But why isn't it a swear word?

If I said that something was crap at school I'd have gotten a detention

Ergo it's a swear word Grin

YABU - or at least YAB out of date. According to Collins dictionary:

This word was formerly considered to be taboo, and it was labelled as such in older editions of Collins English Dictionary. However, it has now become acceptable in speech, although some older or more conservative people may object to its use.

IzzyIsBusy · 16/09/2016 21:14

Langue evolves. Crap was a no no when i was a chilb but these days it is less so.

Of all the swear words crap is the leadt offensive... a bit like fart.

TallulahTheTiger · 16/09/2016 21:15

Mum and Dad don't like swearing Simon..

edwinbear · 16/09/2016 21:15

I consider it a swear word and would not tolerate dc's using it, nor would I expect to hear it in a professional setting.

RubbleBubble00 · 16/09/2016 21:15

We had this debate at toddler group. It's probably a mild swear word but one in wouldnt discapline my kids for as in use it. Friend thinks it's awful and would discapline her kids for using it

TheWitTank · 16/09/2016 21:16

Not a swear word in my opinion. Use it all the time!

redexpat · 16/09/2016 21:16

Americans are v relaxed about crap but damn is a big deal out there.

IncidentalAnarchist · 16/09/2016 21:16

Really?!
If my toddler said fart I'd be fine
If they said that something was crap I'd be mortified

OP posts:
BrightOranges · 16/09/2016 21:17

I agree with you OP. it is a swear word as is damn, sod, git and bloody. But they have all been down played and more acceptable in every day language. I don't care if people swear but don't want to hear my children using that language. Don't like fart either but that is probably because I am now an old fart Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 16/09/2016 21:18

'gotten'? Are you American? If so, I will refer instead to websters - referring to defacation it's 'usually vulgar', but with the meaning 'nonsense, rubbish' which is probably applicable in this context then 'sometimes vulgar'.

In which case you're both right/wrong.

KingJoffreysRestingCuntface · 16/09/2016 21:19

Crap? Swearing??

No!!

Topseyt · 16/09/2016 21:19

Nope. It isn't a swear word.

Maybe it was considered as such some generations ago, but not now.

IMHO bum, snot and fart are not swearing either, though when I was growing up my parents would have made out that they were.

eddiemairswife · 16/09/2016 21:21

I remember seeing American films in my youth where they used to play a dice(?) game called 'shooting craps'.

IncidentalAnarchist · 16/09/2016 21:22

No I'm not American Confused

OP posts:
heatherwithapee · 16/09/2016 21:23

I wouldn't classify it as a swear word, but would object to my children using it in everyday conversation, as I would for e.g 'shut up'.

IgnoreMeEveryOtherReindeerDoes · 16/09/2016 21:25

DS: why can't I buy such and such toy
Me: Because it's crap

Nope not a swear word

seriouslyclueless · 16/09/2016 21:26

Ha ha my 6 year old has taken to saying "holy crap" which he is doing just to see what I'm going to say and I'm a) trying to ignore and b) wonder if I should be ignoring ??
He doesn't and wouldn't say this in school so know he knows it's definitely a bit wrong.

MrsMook · 16/09/2016 21:27

I'd say mild swearing. It's not a word that you'd want to hear in a professional setting or from children.

Same basic meaning as shit really Grin

Lizmay12 · 16/09/2016 21:28

This is a crap thread sorry not sorry

DontWantToBeRemembered · 16/09/2016 21:28

If one of the kids in my class said they were going for a crap u would not be impressed
