I went to Belgium about ten years ago with DBoyfriend at the time and some friends. DB is interested in WWI so we spent some time going round old trenches and battle sites and stuff and he got chatting to one man who I think worked on a trench that was currently being excavated. He told DB about it, and gave him the access code to get into the area, but said we had to get there before a certain time because the code changed every day. It took us a bit longer than we expected to find this place (driving round Belgium before sat navs!) and when we eventually got there the sun was just about to set. It was a really creepy place, right in the middle of a forest with a high fence around the area that was being dug up. I also remember that there really weird scarecrows in the next field – instead of normal straw men things the farmers had hung actual dead birds up on posts to deter the others!
When we tried to get in the code we’d been given didn’t work. Me and DFriends were a bit spooked by the place and worried that we wouldn’t find our way back in the dark, so we tried to get DB to leave but he refused to go after we’d spent so long trying to find the place, so climbed over the fence to have a quick shifty and we stayed in the car. A few seconds later we started hearing a really loud, deep, booming sound. Exactly like shell/heavy artillery bombing like it’s described in books/portrayed in war films. The three of us in the car were all looking at each other saying ‘What the hell is that?’ etc. All of us could hear it, but no idea what it was/where it was coming from. We were literally in the middle of nowhere in these woods, miles from any villages etc. and it was complete, dead silence before the noise started, not even any birds cawing. DB absolutely legged it back, got in the car and we drove away as fast as we could!
Even today we all remember it but have no idea what it could be. I did think that perhaps it was some sort of reconstruction that DB somehow triggered when he landed on the ground, but it wasn’t that sort of ‘interactive’ place iyswim, just a bare excavation site, and the noise didn’t sound like it was coming from speakers or something at all. My one friend still refuses to talk about it, and DB who I’m still in touch with and is the most dismissive woo person ever admits that it was very strange!

A second story was when I was revising in the library during my undergrad. There were about sixty computers in that area in rows back to back, iyswim and most of them were in use. I was trying to do my work, and I could hear the girl on the computer opposite me crying. It went on for ages, sometimes stopping, then getting louder, quieter, etc. I was wondering if I should say something, but kept looking at the people either side of me for a bit of a clue as to what to do! They didn’t seem to react to it, so I just kept quiet but I wondered why the people either side of her didn’t do anything, as they would be sitting right next to her and would be able to see her being upset rather than just hear her (the computers blocked you from seeing the people in the rows opposite). Anyway, after a while of this I really couldn’t concentrate, so I stood up to go….there was nobody on the computer opposite me! There was no way she could have left without me noticing, I had still been able to hear the crying a few seconds earlier, the library was v. quiet so you could hear people coming and going, and the moment she stood up from her chair I would have seen her. Also explains why everyone around me was giving me such weird looks when I was looking at them to see if they could hear it!
I actually heard crying again another time when I was alone in a different part of that library. Didn’t really bother me, just a bit weird that I seemed to have been stalked by a depressed ghost!
