To call 111 for this?

Shamelessly posting here for traffic as it's getting late and I'm worried.

FTM here. DS is 4 weeks old and I've just found this as I undressed him for a late bath (he's very windy and I need to comfort him). Is this just baby acne and WIBU to call 111, or do I actually need to worry? Baby is fine in himself, no fever, usual mood and sleep patterns etc.

I should add I'm on antibiotics for mastitis.

Thank you.

Thank you so much. Have phoned 111. Waiting to be called back
I honestly wouldn't wait for them to call you back, if you feel it is urgent just go to A & E.

I don't wish to scare you but I don't trust 111 at all.

Justaboy · 15/09/2016 22:06

NeedMoreSleepOrSugar If that was meningitis the rash would be a late stage in the disease progression let alone the other symptoms. However I hope that mum is on her way by now with the babe.

A friend of mine was a GP he was faced with doing an over the telephone diagnosis one vital bit if information was missed out by the following morning it was too late he never got over it poor sod. One of the most conscientious doctors around. When our tribe was younger we had a near miss too. And it was around a few months old. Generally very young children have very little reserve as it were and illness progression can take its course much quicker and never never be embarrassed if it was nothing at all.

No medical pro will chastise you for that no matter how busy they are.

Idliketobeabutterfly · 15/09/2016 22:07

Go to a and e

TheLastHeatwave · 15/09/2016 22:12

I'd go to A&E too. 4 weeks is very, very young & anything 'odd' needs looking at as they go downhill very quickly.

Hope the little poppet is just hot, as we are, though.

Vandree · 15/09/2016 22:13

Im usually conservative but tiny baby and rash? straight to a&e. Also do the glass tumbler test as well. I have one child who used to always get viral rashes but each and every time we were told to go straight to a&e just in case. hope all is ok

Mynestisfullofempty · 15/09/2016 22:15

OP I hope you've read the posts from HCPs and are on your way to A&E now. Better safe than sorry.

wtafamidoinginlife · 15/09/2016 22:17

Please go to a&e. Most likely nothing/viral but if it is sepsis/ infection related, hours are crucial

listsandbudgets · 15/09/2016 22:18

Hope you've now wrapped up your lovely baby and you're on your way to A&E. The doctors always prefer to see small children and will never criticise you for bringing them in.

Don't wait for 111 to call back - I once phoned for Dd at about midnight. By 1am she was worse so went to A&E. She wasn't admitted but was given chest x ray and prescribed anti biotics

We got home at 7.45am and cuddled up together in bed only for the phone to ring at some I drifted off to sleep.. it was 111 calling back

MilnersGold · 15/09/2016 22:20

Go straight to A&E. 4 weeks old, nasty rash :( Go now! Also echoing pp about doing the glass tumbler test.

As a side note, I haven't RTFT has your DC had penicillin recently? DD1 had a rash that looked very similar when she was 3mo old & was very sick with D&V, hospitalised on a drip sick :( Turned out she had the family allergy to penicillin.

Please go to A&E to get it checked

butterfliesandzebras · 15/09/2016 22:20

I also think that calling 111 is a waste of time as no-one can see a rash down the phone and so I think that they will also tell you to go to A & E.

I used to think this, but recently when I had an issue and called 111, they made an out of hours appointment for me at a local clinic, so I got seen by a doctor much closer to my home and without the four hour wait that is normal for a&e at my nearest hospital.

(But to be clear, I am only saying that 111 is not a waste of time and can be useful, if the op is worried then of course they should go to a&e).

Mycatsabastard · 15/09/2016 22:22

Hope all is ok.

I'd say go to A&E as well. One of my friends ds had meningitis at a very young age, thankfully fully recovered but with something like that, just don't take the risk.

Baby is gorgeous btw :)

Bigfatnope · 15/09/2016 22:28

My husband is a paramedic and he says dont bother with 111 they are (mostly) usless, just go to a and e, a and e staff are never ever bothered with babies x

GlitteryFluff · 15/09/2016 22:33

I'd get to a&e. Babies and children are usually seen quickly.

ChestyNut · 15/09/2016 22:36

Hope he's ok OP Flowers

PersianCatLady · 15/09/2016 22:39

I am sure that they can be but then comments like this - "We got home at 7.45am and cuddled up together in bed only for the phone to ring at some I drifted off to sleep.. it was 111 calling back" make me think that 111 cannot always be trusted.

Justaboy · 15/09/2016 22:44

Well as the OP hasn't posted for a while lets hope she is on her way and alls well:)

I would never encourage anyone to try to diagnose anything on Goggle or the web but sometimes some information can sometimes help to make that initial decision to go and seek medical help.

The following describes Meningococcal illness and its progression its not shall we say pleasant reading but might make a difference ?

LifeInJeneral · 15/09/2016 22:48

It looks identical to a heat rash my baby had a few weeks ago. Does he have a temperature/ is he eating OK? You can never be too careful,I took my ds to the GPS as they had an appointment pretty much straight away so I don't think it's an overreaction.

Superstar90 · 15/09/2016 22:53

Also a and e will have specialist pediatric doctors, ability to run X-rays, blood tests, have oxygen, antibiotics, ivs etc on hand.
Out of hours GPs, bless them, will just take a little look and if at all concerned only refer you on to a and e anyway.

datingbarb · 15/09/2016 22:53

Looks like heat rash, my dd has exactly the same at one day old the hospital insisted she was kept warm in cardi and hat in the middle of a heatwave

I would def get it checked out though being so young it's hard to tell sometimes if they are ill or not

FlyHighLittleBee · 15/09/2016 23:03

Hope everything's ok OPFlowers

MumOfTwoMasterOfNone · 15/09/2016 23:06

Hope everything's ok OP. Always go. They cannot tell you they're feeling rubbish. I thought I was being a neurotic new mum and my DS had GBS meningitis and I was worried about causing a fuss. Luckily my Mum rang the hospital or I'm sure our story would be very different.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 15/09/2016 23:14

I hope you are at A&E now and everything is OK.
I took DS1 (at 6 months) to A&E with a temperature I couldn't control. They observed him for a while then sent us home. I wasn't happy with how he was later that evening and took him back. They did blood tests which showed a severe infection and he was in hospital for several days. They were all pleased I had brought him back and got him checked a second time. Doctors would much prefer to see an unwell baby that doesn't need admitting than miss seeing one that does.
(p.s. DS1 is now a strapping teenager so no after effects)

Haudyerwheesht · 15/09/2016 23:15

Hope all is ok. Ds came out in a rash similar when he was about the same age. He spent the night in the paed ward but it seems it was 'just' viral. Always best to get checked though.

Justaboy · 15/09/2016 23:34

MumOfTwoMasterOfNone Well and truly dodged a bullet there, well a bloody machine gun full of 'em!.

Its always a problem making that decision to seek help like that, this is probably the most difficult part of the diagnostic and treatment path.

And of course as you say they at that age they can't say what's ailing them at least Mum's have that gut instinct which they rely on a lot !

I think we can see here this evening OP mum was unsure but the Go! chorus has made her mind up well I do hope so;!

Much the same also for ChazsBrilliantAttitude too in a way!

jesterkat · 15/09/2016 23:42

Go to emergency, doesn't look like baby acne.
Prob either viral rash, heat rash or sensitivity/ allergy to something eg antibiotics. It needs looking at by a professional asap due to babies age. X x
