To call 111 for this?

Shamelessly posting here for traffic as it's getting late and I'm worried.

FTM here. DS is 4 weeks old and I've just found this as I undressed him for a late bath (he's very windy and I need to comfort him). Is this just baby acne and WIBU to call 111, or do I actually need to worry? Baby is fine in himself, no fever, usual mood and sleep patterns etc.

I should add I'm on antibiotics for mastitis.

Thank you.

Poor little thing, glad you made the call, you're doing the right thing.

strandedabroad · 15/09/2016 21:32

I feel so guilty for not noticing earlier. Will take his temp now but he feels fine.

Op - 111 will just send you to out of hours dr or a and e. As another poster said they can't diagnose rash on the phone complete waste of time ringing them in this situation. Unless you live far away from a hospital just drive or get taxi to an a and e - it's really normal to take young babies straight there. That rash isn't baby ache. If you have mastitis then is he feeding ok? Could he be dehydrated? This can cause problems in young babies too. Long and short - skip 111 and just go to hospital :-)

ThisIsPlanetEarth · 15/09/2016 21:33

Let us know how he is, my first daughter had a rash , apparently it was due to using biological washing powder when I should have been using non bio but your little one has the rash on his face too. Hope he is okay OP x

Superstar90 · 15/09/2016 21:35

Ps don't feel guilty - you are doing an amazing job and are seeking help now which is exactly the right thing to be doing. Children can change/develop symptoms really quickly which is why you probably didn't see it earlier.

ThisIsPlanetEarth · 15/09/2016 21:37

Also if you are breast feeding and on antibiotics, could he be taking a reaction to the antibiotics through the breast milk? Don't know if all antibiotics get passed through the milk. Good luck x

HeffalumpHistory · 15/09/2016 21:38

Get it checked. Be safe than sorry.

1 year ago tomorrow I was full of apologies to docs for being over anxious with my 7week baby& wasting their time.
They praised my insistence at her being seen. She had menigitis (not typical symptoms at that point) and I quite possibly saved her life.

Justaboy · 15/09/2016 21:38

strandedabroad Please don't mess waiting for 111 to call you back wrap him up and take him to A&E now.

No one will blame you at all but that doesn't look aright to me.

Please go now!

PitchFork · 15/09/2016 21:40

I'm in the 'go now' camp.
he's so little and while it could be a heat rash it could also me more serious.

Going against the grain here, but that just looks like normal newborn baby skin to me. He looks gorgeous and I just want to squeeze him!

I don't understand how 111/a&e works, but I've always called my gp and then got an appointment at out of hours clinic.

Just get seen for your peace of mind. That's what the NHS is there for Smile

BurnTheBlackSuit · 15/09/2016 21:46

Go now. Hopefully it's nothing, but that is the only way to find out.

NeedMoreSleepOrSugar · 15/09/2016 21:46

Very rarely I'd say this, but go and get him checked at A&E. Better safe than sorry. Have you done the glass test against his skin? (press a glass against the rash - it should disappear - if not get him to hospital immediately)

Edenrose206 · 15/09/2016 21:48

strandedabroad, please do take your little guy to A&E. He's so small, the 111 medics will probably advise you to go!! He needs to be checked out. Tonight. Now. FWIW my little one (older) had a full-body rash (very similar) that turned out to be scarlet fever... it isn't to be messed with as it can lead to hearing loss, even sepsis. DS needed antibiotics ASAP, and yet he seemed fine in himself. But his tiny throat was a mess/sore/infected. My GP said scarlet fever is all over the place at the mo! Please, please go...Flowers

Draylon depends where you live - it's still a and e round by us. I know as they saved my daughters life - please don't ever advise someone on mumsnet not to go - fact is if a mum is worried enough to post on here her instinct is saying something is wrong and that should always be checked out. Never worth taking the risk. We were in two minds about taking our daughter and if we hadn't she would have died - simple. She went from minor symptoms to needing to be incubated on life support within about 8 hours.

Edenrose206 · 15/09/2016 21:50

And yes, do the clear-glass test as per needmoresleep, to make sure the rash fades under pressure.

yodaonthebars · 15/09/2016 21:51

My best friend is a nurse and says no one will begrudge you in the slightest taking such a young baby to A and E. They would rather be safe than sorry with such a tiny baby.

justilou · 15/09/2016 21:54

Hopefully just heat rash, but the advice is sound to take him to A&E - if just for peace of mind. Nobody will tell you that you're overreacting. Good luck - I'm sure that beautiful little guy will be just fine!

CwtchyQ · 15/09/2016 21:54

Can I just add for anyone reading - I was told by an a&e nurse that the glass test is NOT suitable for children that young, she told us it can still be an issue even if it fades. Best always, always to get checked.

Hope your DC is okay OP - a friend's DS had the same at that age and it was a viral infection, nothing serious.

BurnTheBlackSuit · 15/09/2016 21:56

BTW! Don't feel guilty about not noticing earlier. The rash may very well have not been there earlier. Good luck at hospital and please come back and tell us, when you are able, that your gorgeous boy is fine.

EvansAndThePrince · 15/09/2016 22:00

I think the glass test has changed now, you're supposed to stretch the skin out with your fingers to see if it fades. Happy to be corrected but that's what I recall from when my DD had a rash!

OP do let us know everything is okay, as I'm sure it will be Smile

Toddlerteaplease · 15/09/2016 22:00

I'm a paediatric nurse and I agree with all the others. Get him checked now. Probably nothing serious but better safe than sorry. It worries me that people set to much store by looking for a rash, as the rash in septicaemia is a late sign and other symptoms aren't always taken seriously. By which time it's too late.

peneleope82 · 15/09/2016 22:00

Hope all is ok.

You're doing the right thing seeking medical help,my youngest had a v v slight temp at 4 weeks old for literally 2 hours and when I mentioned it at his 6 week check the GP told me quite sternly that I should have got medical advice regardless for a baby so small.

Better to be safe than sorry etc but try not to panic, am sure he'll be absolutely fine xx

PersianCatLady · 15/09/2016 22:03

Normally I am really anti people going to A & E but I think that with such a young baby and it being late you really do need to go to A & E.

I suspect that they will say it is nothing to worry about but you need to hear that from a professional as opposed to me.

I also think that calling 111 is a waste of time as no-one can see a rash down the phone and so I think that they will also tell you to go to A & E.

If you don't go you are going to have a terrible night worrying so why not get down there, get seen and then get home to bed?
